Učka - Vojak

Jedriličar, it's true that 20 kunas isn't some big cost, but on the other hand if we had to pay for every visit to the mountains, that would add up to a real little fortune in a year and a big problem for many people. Nature should be freely accessible to everyone! And excuses that maintaining and renovating the park costs money are completely pointless, because it's the mountain enthusiasts who keep nature as it should be. Obviously the local authorities sensed there's good profit and a source of money inflow in this move. The biggest problem is if it turns out true and other locals follow suit, including Slovenians who anyway follow all the world's negative trends. Otherwise it's already similar in many places here, no entrance fee to the national park but pretty high parking fees, which practically means the same thing, just that with that money they pay someone to collect parking fees and a few truckloads of sand to fill some rain hole a few times a year, if at all? Same shit, different packaging! Bohinj is a good example. We'll just go to places without that until they're gone and avoid "salons where they shear sheep". When even those run out we'll go abroad, Dolomites and Austrian Alps are close enough. zavijanje z očmi

After all the mountaineering societies on both sides of Učka rose up on their hind legs, something finally got moving ...

Cycling ascent to Učka:

Boljunsko polje(Brnci) - Vranja /approx 5km/ - toll stations under Učka /3km/ - Učka (Vela Učka) /5km/ - Poklon pass /1km/ - ridge top Vojak /6km/ - mostly descent to Dolenja vas (direction Lupoglav) /19km/ - Boljun and Brnci /9km/

When driving through Istria, your gaze inevitably sometimes stops at the prominent and mighty ridge of Učka, its highest peak named Vojak(1401m) has besides various transmitters and converters at the top also a nice observation tower.
A nice road leads to the mountain or Poklon pass, once the main (until they built the tunnel) or old road Rijeka - Pazin. Although the road from Opatija riviera (Ičiči) is gentler, for our ascent we choose the steeper one - from the western side. For the starting point - start of cycling you can choose several places, depending on your fitness and preparation, for this ascent I recommend a mountain bike or road bike with favorable gear ratios for the slope, but the last 150m where it's macadam won't work with narrow tires anyway.
If you have time and a bit of exploratory spirit, on the return, just below the toll stations, I recommend a short visit to Vele Drage or a view of it, but it's better to go on foot.

Let me say that what worried me most was the traffic and the road junction from Vranja to toll stations or connection to the Učka road, but there were no problems or issues with orientation and following. More descriptions in the attached pictures.
Well, and some data on the ascent difficulty: from Boljun field, Vranja to toll stations moderate slope (average under 10%), from toll stations, Vele Učke to Poklon saddle (steep slope approx 15-20%), from Poklon to Vojak (average 10%), the rest - Dolenja vas and Boljun is easier and shorter.
From Boljunsko Polje to Vranje the road begins to climb gradually1
we turn through the village Vranja, where it is also possible to park the car at several places, ... perhaps near the train station2
From the village Vranja you come again to the main and wide road, which luckily is not so busy3
first signs for Učka ... only just before the junction of main roads and toll booths for the tunnel4
... boldly forward, ... now the destinations are also indicated5
... and past both toll booths, which we see on our right in the ascent direction6
those who like only the climb can park at the parking lot behind Velo Drago7
The road soon becomes very steep from here and the slope doesn't ease much all the way to Poklon pass.8
The road is wide and nicely routed with switchbacks.9
Every now and then a view opens to our final goal.10
Spring with fresh and cold water along the path, just below Učka village (Vela Učka).11
Through small village Učka follow the main road which turns left at a small snack bar to Poklon pass, right turnoff leads to Mala Učka.12
Saddle i.e. Poklon pass and friendly guesthouse with local specialties (visit on return).13
At Poklon pass, to which the road also leads from Opatija riviera and Rijeka.14
Turnoff from Poklon pass to the summit - Vojak direction, car traffic prohibited but we encountered several!15
Very comfortable, asphalt and shady road to the top.16
In between the marked mountain footpath crosses the road several times.17
On the path, ... first views of Rijeka and Kvarner Bay.18
When you spot the transmitter above again - two more turns to the top (left and right), but actually three longer ones.19
If there were no transmitters, converters and military... there probably wouldn't be such a road.20
Another good 100 m of rough macadam to the viewpoint tower - Vojak tower.21
Informative sign at the top.22
View of the summit ridge with telecommunication towers.23
View of central Istria, Lupoglav and Boljun below Učka (sadly hazy due to clouds).24
At the parking before visiting the educational trail Vela Draga.25
Illustrative, like a handbook for beginners, ...26
and also a somewhat more school-like explanation ....27
and part of the view - how it looks in nature28
... including the visited crags, nice ridge with solid rock29
we continue towards Lupoglav, in Dolenja vas we turn towards Boljun30
bike transports are various - this one is very unusual for us31
old village architecture in Boljun32
interesting remains of the former castle in Boljun, self-viewing possible and own exploration33
and ... from its terraces: wonderful view of Učka and the traversed path34

Yesterday Jože and I conquered the highest peak of Istria and Učka - Vojak. We started in Medveja and continued via Lovranska Draga to the summit. The weather was cloudy and foggy throughout, so no views at all, otherwise a very good fitness tour where you need to overcome 1400m of elevation gain. Really a shame there were no views, because given the location they must be wonderful.
Start at sea level 0 :)1

Cycling ascent to Učka (Vojak 1400m) from Opatija riviera (from the sea)

It's best to start the route late afternoon, but the first 9 km from the sea to Veprinac, either from Ičiči or from Matulji, will still be quite strenuous and hot, regardless of being on the shady side of the mountain in the afternoon. From Veprinac onwards to Poklon, the old road over the mountain pass becomes more friendly and even less trafficked, in summer and this time it's already in shade from 17:00 onwards, and the forest also provides pleasant freshness according to its possibilities, which is especially felt from the Poklon saddle towards Vojak. At the top it's at least 10-12 degrees cooler than on the coast and don't forget to put on a windbreaker for the descent.
From Veprinac to Poklon approx 8 km, not too steep except two or three sections with approx 13% gradient, from Poklon to Vojak another approx 7 km, but less steep than before. The last 200 m from the telecom antennas to the observation tower is rough macadam, suitable only for mountain bike and wide tires.
If comparing the ascent from Vranje / from the western - opposite side of the pass over Učka, this eastern approach from Opatija riviera is significantly easier for cyclists, but longer.
Map of the path from the sea to Učka from the eastern side.1
Over Veprinac.2
Wide, comfortable and little-trafficked old road over the pass.3
In the late afternoon the road is mostly shaded even in summer.4
View towards the sea, towards Rijeka.5
Past the mountain home, 2/3 of the ascent is behind us.6
The inn at Poklon pass is closed on Mondays.7
Start of the last part of the road from Poklon saddle to Vojak peak.8
In the second part of this section beautiful views open to the Kvarner islands.9
At the end of the asphalt just below the summit.10
Vojak at the top, at the observation tower (no entrance fee).11
Učka - Istrian giant with height almost half of Triglav.12
In fine weather the views from the top are wonderful.13
... and of course - from here our mountains are also visible.14

On Sunday we went with a group from Moščeniška Draga to Vojak, the path is nice and undemanding, at a slow pace we took cca. 4.5 hours to the top.

Then we descended to the other side towards the Dopolavoro inn (cca. 5 km on asphalt road, path can be shortened with forest shortcuts), where they have excellent selection of various game; as an interesting fact, I mention that bear meat is also available.

Well after dinner transport back to the valley was waiting for us.

Well here p

A bit late, but we had a nice three-day trip around Kvarner mid-April:

- first day around Krk, partly on Camino from Dobrinj to Šilo
- visit to Bakar
- second day Kastav, hike and sightseeing in Opatija
- third day ascent to Učka and also visit to Trsat

Paths were well marked, guide Uroš excellent as always, company great, weather nice, comfort in Hotel Istra in Opatija great. Saw a lot, walked comfortably and had a good time. Only issue in Opatija is parking already in pre-season...
Camino also on Krk, we went from Dobrinj to Šila1

which is the better choice...
1.) via Potok and Lovranska Draga?
2.) or via Vlašinj, Kalić - Visoče

Is it best to do a loop, up one side/down the other?

Does anyone perhaps have a more useful GPX - since I see there are tons of paths...
