Hi Turbo. I'm interested if the road to the "Nordio" hut is normally drivable and what the snow conditions are like on the way to Ojsternik?

I can provide some information because I was there on Sunday. The road is drivable right to the end of the valley. The Nordio-Defar hut is now placed a bit higher, located just below the Lom saddle. The path to the hut is almost snow-free. Little snow. Further along the path through the forest to the Bistrica pasture it's snow-free, here and there a patch of ice. When we reach the plain there's some snow. The lower slopes of Ojstrnik are almost completely snow-free, higher up some snow, the summit is completely blown clean.

Today a nice hiking group gathered with the goal Ojsternik... Conditions were appropriate to the weather, up to the plain below it there was a track, further on we made the track... The snow was very crusty and sank several times to... We returned past the chapel to the starting point... Nicely spent day in beautiful areas at summer temperatures...

And does anyone know what Ojstrnik is like in winter or with current snow amounts. Can one go without special winter gear?

Should be doable, but I recommend at least crampons. Especially the roads might be slippery. In different conditions it could be different...

Thanks. I'm aware things can change quickly. Overnight there'll obviously be a bit more snow, so we'll probably go somewhere lower.

I visited Ojstrnik ten days ago. I'd warn that path 403-507 in the lower part is very hard to pass due to new logging. First snow probably beat the foresters who didn't clean up. Logs and branches everywhere, pretty unpleasant in snow. Worth trying path 507.

Thanks, anyway I'd do a loop hike, though I doubt I'll make it this year, it was mainly an option because clouds were forecast elsewhere.
Luckily sunny even in Slovenia's farthest corner or maybe even better. Today at Tromeja fantastic, almost summer weather above fog, views to "all" Austria.

Zatrep Ukva valley - Lom saddle - NW slopes of Ojstrnik - summit. Mentioned approach possible only on skis in winter conditions, which aren't fully there yet, missing another meter of snow.
