Hello! First: I don't want to act smart and won't cause panic. When I was climbing "that steep" on Nanos this afternoon (cca. 14.30), near "Janez's path" on my left I heard sounds of falling rocks. I thought to myself, again some hikers making shortcut. Then I spotted 2 chamois. Wasn't a mirage! We stared a bit, then they ran down the scree. On return, near "Janez's" again I heard same sounds and spotted 5 chamois. These also (after a while) ran uphill. I've seen chamois on Nanos many times before, but early morning and never midday (as they say). About chamois it says: "Chamois are social animals active in the morning and evening." Maybe influence of highway construction Razdrto - Rebernice? No massive hiking to scare animals from top, today on Nanos there was none either (met 1 up, 7 down). Any biologist or wildlife expert around? Is this normal?

I'm no expert at all, but I think changes are happening in the lifestyle of several different animal species. E.g.: once it was believed hedgehogs roam in twilight and at night. Now I meet them around home on meadows, garden, low bushes at very different times of day. Roe deer graze midday right by the road. Crows have used car traffic for nut cracking for some time: brings nut, throws on asphalt, waits nearby for car to crush it. Then goes and eats the kernel (seen multiple times). Those same crows once lived in wild, away from humans - now problem in cities where over-multiplied. Not mentioning rock ptarmigans waiting when a hiker sits on summit and opens backpack ... More could probably be found.

Hello! I also read about crows I think in Gaia or in Rozenvrt (advert ). Since I'm neighbor to military polygon, I've already briefly met bears 4x that retreat when they have exercises there and even if not shooting (once I met a bear with 2 cubs alone). But chamois that are supposed to be wilder animals... Looks like everything turned domestic .

As for chamois and their rock rolling, let me say that's nothing new. It's their normal reaction, as they drive away intruders from their territory like that. Unfortunately it happens (though rarely) on hiking trails too, on pathless areas where we cross their "courts", it's almost a rule... so caution is not superfluous.

Yesterday with buddy on Visoka Vrbanska Špica and on descent from Stanič hut back to Kot valley we spotted so many chamois as not for a long time...don't say they were posing. About 10m away from them and photographed them....crazy...unforgettable

Has anyone maybe seen mouflons in our mountains? Supposedly some are in the Kamnik Alps.

Yes, I saw them in late autumn below Svinjak peak, a big herd. For Kamnik, I don't know.

At the beginning of May, I too above Dovje near the forest road from the car spotted (probably) a wolf. At first I thought it was a dog, but its behavior was quite different. Since it didn't occur to me that it could be a wolf, I somehow naively concluded that it was perhaps some larger fox. Now it's clear to me that it was neither one nor the other, as its size was comparable to a German shepherd. It acted quite shyly.

I'm not a small livestock breeder and think that if I were, I would also report how many calves wildlife has killed for me. Regarding bears and similar animals I think the fear (at least in autumn when cubs are already almost grown) is unfounded. Bear retreats from human if it hears him in time. Caution applies mainly because of slips and similar problems which are the biggest danger in mountains. Even triggering rocks by ibex is more exception than rule.

I thought bears are only in Kočevje area and roamed around without worry, now I'll think a bit when I'll walk around although they say it retreats, better not to meet it so no one has to retreat

Wolves are usually more shy and fear humans already due to upright walking and because fear of him has passed into their genes. If it accidentally attacks then e.g. pepper spray against dogs helps. Bears are another story, mostly they do retreat from people but if mama has cubs she can be dangerous. Against them ordinary spray doesn't help, need to buy stronger one which is also available here e.g. at Lovec.

Yes, excellent idea, the spray in my eyes would also calm me and deter from aggression. Highly recommend reading "encounter with a bear" on ZGS website.

Lynx, unfortunately you think like a human. I have some experience with dog attacks and one experience with human attack. Dogs in all cases after first squirt 'shat themselves' and left me alone, whereas with human it wasn't so. Animal if it feels you're stronger prefers to retreat while human rams head through wall.
