Animal behavior

heinz- I don't know if you could have met a wolf, since wolves avoid humans from afar. They are very intelligent. Likewise if you didn't know, never in history anywhere has a healthy wolf attack on human been recorded. Likewise in Slovenia no case yet. So regarding wolves you really don't need to worry. If I met one, it would seem to me veeeeeery nice.

True that it's rare when wolf attacks human, but in distress even devil eats flies. Nor is it known how these beasts were chased by hunters before or what experiences they had with humans and if they are healthy. If it took down poor calf which has there 200 to 250kg, then one human of average 80kg is for these beasts small snack to slaughter.velik nasmeh

I claim nothing, just that it's clear to me it wasn't a dog nor a fox. Likewise it wasn't "encounter" but mere observation. The animal retreated quite quickly, although it was still quite far (15-20 m). I added it acted shyly, similar to husky but shorter fur, emaciated etc. It circled twice, then skilfully disappeared.

I'm appealing to experts in hunting legislation to advise and explain the hunting code in the following case I witnessed today.
I'm leaving the Spar store not far from home, when there's a bang near the farm. I look at crows on a tall tree as they take off but one falls vertically to the ground fatally. I pass by and on a narrow path outside the farm's property I see the poor crow lying helplessly on the ground blinking mildly at me. I stand and look around, who could be that idiot! Then suddenly the farmer comes to me. I snap at him! Why shoot at birds! He, like some hunter, says crows only cause damage. I think what damage, there are no crops and they weren't flying over fields either? I tell him, even though neighbor, that if he shoots again I'll report him right away to the hunting inspectorate because he won't treat animals like this. He boldly replies he'll even tell me his address. I tell him I surely know it myself! He took that crow right in front of me, probably it'll end up in his dog's stomach, so the evidence is gone. Asking experts, is it even allowed to shoot like that in urban environment even if maybe with a weaker air rifle and is the event legally prosecutable? Thanks for the answer and best regards.cool

Suing a neighbor, don't do that. The proverb says, whoever has too much money should build a house or sue a neighbor.
I had a very similar case. Neighbor shot a crow sitting on a spruce in our yard. Dad didn't like it at all because he considered crows as pets... I went to the main hunter, that's the head of the hunting association and told him what happened. He took the complaint seriously and nothing similar happened again. But it happened that I needed hunters myself when an injured and sick fox came to us. I couldn't get rid of it myself and was really glad others did it instead of me.

In short: crows are one of the few animals not protected, on the contrary, hunters never shoot as many as planned. Sometimes they even poisoned them by laying poisoned eggs. I hope they don't do that anymore. Of course shooting in the middle of the village is also forbidden and certainly not allowed to shoot crows between houses, on the street or yards. I suggest you file a complaint with the hunting association. If they have a normal president he'll know how to make order in his ranks.

Žan, you advised me nicely from a similar case. Already from the past I had that case at Legastja where a hunter was "looking through the sight" of the rifle right on the road, in front a young roe deer. No matter how we turn it, from many stories of people who dealt with hunters it seems more or less that rare hunters are those who would care for and protect animals (feeding, culling sick). Mostly they are worse characters like barbarians, heartless, usually drunk too and take their mission into their own hands.
In my case he should at least have seized the animal as evidence then, but who would think of revenge then when you give the animal only peace-security, step away from it to calm the scared injured animal. There's already so much suffering and distorted human reason in the world that you can't understand how it's possible nearby. As a spiritual person I respect the life of every living being and as Holy Mother says everything is one and animal and plant world is part of (Purushe)-God himself (through nature). Everything is one and complements and supports as natural habitat and ecosystem and everything in nature works exclusively on basis of divine vibrations. If there weren't any birds couldn't sing in the morning if I translate figuratively but real (how far God reaches with his vibrations).
For this case I won't sue, but hope the farmer got my strict warnings since now it's completely dark in his house. Best regards from Rok.

During afternoon recreation I spotted devoured remains of game in solitude. Since I'm from the western part of Polhograjske hills I don't exactly know which game could roam around here.
What was left were hooves, gray-black fur and some white, fur 5 cm definitely not wild boar because as far as I know it has coarse bristles, could be mouflon but no pure brown fur at all, similar fur like this chamois:

Tomorrow I can go there and photograph it but if anything remains it's not that close.

Here around chamois is nothing unusual, at Kozjekov grič you even have ibex. Last year I met two.

slaughter in the snow that I witnessed recently:
well I wasn't exactly witness but the battlefield was still fresh. photographed somewhere near fish farm in Bohinj.
I would add that what LG talks about is not isolated case. I myself have found thick animal hairs on branches several times and next to them paw prints that seemed like from lynx.

hmmm The work is done quite amateurishly - namely wild predators like fox, wolf, lynx or bear leave lots of signs of strangulation or exsanguination on the cadaver neck (blood, wounds, broken neck, broken trachea etc.). In practice that means slaughter dogs kill the animal bit by bit and imagine the suffering, wild predators first strangle it and only then devour.jezik

Definitely not chamois here but I'd say roe deer this one ended unluckily that night and further remains most likely roe deer.
But definitely there are chamois in Polhograjske dolomites.

@pohodnik:
Age, disease, unlucky fall etc.
Judging by the wounds on the body, the animal fell down the rocks into the valley, but it looks bloated and we know what that means.
It also happens that a rival or predator simply pushes the animal off the cliff into the abyss.eek
Of course, the predator would exploit the situation in this case, but this carcass is untouched.

Yes, ljubitelj gora, I envy you for observing these cute little animals like this, which surely don't feel comfortable in these weather conditions. I hope you'll manage another picture to cheer us up.nasmeh
