That's how it soared today. Griffon vulture above Krasji vrh. It was strange for it, because there were many of us on the St. Nicholas hike.

That's how the white-headed vultures soared yesterday over the Carnic expanses...

This tiny bird is the goldcrest. Rarely seen, for my hammers and anvils it will soon be inaudible too.

Could these be pine grosbeaks, yesterday above Škofje?

Hi, probably they really are pine grosbeaks. This winter we've already picked up a couple of reports about a potential mass gathering site for this species in the South Primorska area and surroundings (roughly the Cerkno-Žiri-Železniki triangle), but the exact location (or at least narrowing it down) is still unknown. But we'd like to find out. So I'm calling on everyone who might spot large flocks there (often like a "river of birds"), to report your sightings if possible. Most helpful are locations of observed flocks during morning or evening flights and their orientation or flight direction. The species roosts communally in a relatively small area, even numbering in the millions! So it's an extraordinary natural spectacle. The birds are drawn by the abundance of acorns. Ločanka, what time did you see the flock, exactly where, and which way was it going? Did you maybe see them landing in tree crowns in some area or circling longer over a narrower spot? Were there several flocks coming from different directions and could you estimate the meeting point of these flights? regards

Ornitolog, first thanks because you've shown up after a long time . We saw that flock around 9:40 below Škofje, so near Kladje, on the way up. A smaller flock overflew us also on the way back. They flew roughly from east to west, without stopping here. So they're flying towards France, as I read somewhere?

Yesterday I saw them flying back for the first time this year, namely cranes. Today again in large numbers announcing the end of winter. First a flock of about 50 birds at 10 a.m., then about 300 half an hour later and in the afternoon another flock, all over the Vipava valley.
