Brana

For those of you who are heading to Brana from Kamniško sedlo these days, let me tell you that the path just below the summit is passable only with winter gear, ice axe, crampons. Wind-packed frozen snow in the gully. Otherwise the path is dry.

Nice mountain greetings, Matic

Let me thank you right away, Matic, for this most valuable info. mežikanje

Today I visited it again, all sunlit and warm in the sun, probably the last this season 'dry'...

At home debating - ice axe only or crampons too... no, without the latter head dangerously forward under roof overhang!

Conditions; the path is dry to the crossing in that 'chimney', above which only a few steps to the edge. Damn, the crossing has nice footprints half-deep sunk in snow, all stone-hard frozen! Only with ice axe... and descent too... zavijanje z očmi

Some 'extra' backpack weight tips scales on Raj sometimes. nasmeh

Snow coming again probably...

Under Brana (from Kamnik Saddle view) still snowfield ~35m long. Crossing deadly dangerous, ice axe recommended (Sunday slip accident fatal). Below climbing path entry from Okrešelj to K.saddle some snow left, no big obstacle.nasmeh

On Sunday on Brana. Under Brana snowfield soft, crossable with lots of caution. Also before entry from Okrešelj to climbing path to Kamnik Saddle 'mushy' snowfield (more than above), steeper with slip risk. Careful and slow, it works.nasmeh

On 6.7.2008 the path to Brana from Kamniško sedlo is normally passable. Snow has melted. But continuation towards Turska gora over Kotliče still very dangerous. Just above Kotliči (in S wall of Brana) still very steep short snowfield. Some bypass it on upper edge, which is no less dangerous. Since snow fairly soft crampons don't grip well. Recommend digging deep steps (ice axe) and utmost caution!!! In case of slip no time to stop practically! Runout straight into abyss!!!mežikanje

Some today's impressions from the path to Brana.
We started the path in Logarska dolina then via Okrešelj and Kamniško sedlo climbed to the summit. Weather mainly sunny and slightly windy. LP Esther and Tadej

Does anyone know if it's possible to reach Brana directly from Jermanca? Has anyone perhaps walked it? Maybe there's even some path? Thanks.

Yes, Benjamin, of course it's possible. The approach description is in Stritar's guide.
I've gone to Brana from that side only once so far, and that long ago (before the last fire that started on that slope). Roughly...
It's pathless terrain. Above Jermanca, follow the hunting trail crossing Brana's slopes from Lepi kamen to Studenec, then climb a hard-to-find trail above it to the hunting stand... From there to below Kaptan, steep pathless grass awaits you in places! Past Butara, cross nicely into the gully along the slope, then up to the 'saddle' above Bosova grapa...
To the summit from there awaits a splendid panoramic walk...
As I say, I don't know the terrain condition after the last fire (very steep scree below Kaptan). Definitely read the guide description well. wink

Yes, it's very demanding orientation-wise, as you quickly end up in some hard climbing. I was up there twice before the aforementioned fire, and I think it was one of the nicest paths in the Kamniks. Then once after the fire it was very dangerous because there's nothing to hold onto (burnt scree, undergrowth burnt to the rocks). From Jermanca to Brana summit 4 hours. First time with alpinist friend we got a bit stuck, good we had 30m rope with us.

On Saturday, after a long time, we went back to our mountains. We left the car at Jermanca and headed towards Kamniško sedlo. Despite starting in pleasant morning hours, it was very humid. The result was heavy legs and slow walking. At Kamniško sedlo we rested a bit and headed towards the goal "Brana". Just below the summit, thick fog caught us, and in the distance we heard threatening thunder. At the summit, we signed the book, took two photos and headed back. The fog was getting thicker, the thunder closer. Near the last fixed protections, the first raindrops hit us, which sped up our pace. Just before the junction leading to Okrešelj, a heavy storm hit us. Strong cold rain with fierce wind soaked all our clothes in an instant, as well as those in my backpack (good that we at least left one at the KS hut). Luckily, due to the fog, we didn't see the lightning flashing above us, but we heard the awful thunder (this was the first and we hope last storm we experienced in the mountains). Completely soaked, we arrived at the hut, which was full of wet mountain visitors, where we changed into dry clothes. I would praise the hut keeper who lit the stove and allowed those who stayed in the hut to dry their wet clothes, boots and backpacks. On the same day, in the afternoon hours, when the fog had partially cleared, we headed back towards Jermanca to the car.

Always carry a PVC bag with clothes in it. At least I do, to protect the camera, spare clothes. At that moment I was already at Okrešelj (15 minutes before the storm).
Interesting - some were still thinking before the storm to head towards the saddle.

I agree. The weather this year is very unfavorable for hiking, and if we are drawn to the mountains, let's choose a shorter tour to return from the summits in good time. Sometimes it is necessary to change the goal chosen in the morning; on Friday instead of Skuta it was only Mala Rinka via Žmavčarje, and when my husband and I arrived in the valley, it poured and thundered properly.
And safe in the mountains.

When buying a backpack, it is smart to buy a rain cover for it too.

Yesterday from Okrešelj to Savinjsko and Jezersko sedlo, but already below the bivouac at Mrzli dol it became clear that the tour had to be shorter. I had planned a descent to Ledine, but at Savinjsko sedlo I changed my mind and returned! Everything was quiet and peaceful, darker fogs were dragging over Turska gora and Rinka.
No choice, I said, down as soon as possible!
10 minutes after return to Frišauf, the thunderstorm raged.
The friendly shelter was almost too small for all who sought refuge from heavy rain and lightning!
Storms in mountains are unpredictable and if you know the signs before them even somewhat, you can return safely!
You have to observe what happens around you!

I don't know why there is a model weather forecast?zmeden? On Saturday a 60% chance of thunderstorms was forecasted already in the midday, but people rushed up to the high mountains!
I rather enjoyed the whole day on Konjska gorazavijanje z očmi. When the weather will be more stable, then full assault to the high mountains!mežikanje

I went to Križ from Logarska dolina, from there over Štajerska and Mala Rinka, then down Turski dol, and still escaped the rain velik nasmeh
Well, it got me at Okrešelj. But it was interesting in the morning, when there was still a completely clear sky at Okrešelj, at the junction of the path to Turski žleb and Savinjsko sedlo, suddenly darker clouds appeared...

Yes, Solido, Geppo and Kopron, you are completely right about equipment. Although I always have clothes and everything else in the backpack in PVC bags, this time it wasn't like that and the punishment came quickly. True, I was a bit careless and haven't bought a rain cover for the backpack yet. We expected the thunderstorm a bit later and not at that time when it caught up with us. What can I say; every lesson costs something, this one luckily ended harmlessly and I learned a lot from it.

I started alone on Saturday at 6:20 at the waterfall. Goal was Mrzla gora. In the morning it was really still great weather. Back at the waterfall around 11:00. Turned back a bit before the thunderstorms started. I was also surprised myself when returning from Okrešelj by crowds of people who were still rushing upwards despite the increasingly threatening black clouds.

Yes really unbelievable in what conditions some people set outeek! It's not only what and how we have in the backpack! Preparations must start at home, best a day before departure. Essential is a thorough check of the weather map, which nowadays is available on the web, TV, radio,... Sometimes very nice weather is forecasted but it still tricks us up there! I recommend that besides the basic gear in the backpack ALWAYS have rain cover, spare dry clothes, windbreaker, rescue foil (about 2 euros), good to have also poncho or umbrella (of course we use this when lower and not on ridges, summits,...). If we have two dry PVC bags with us, we can help with soaked boots too (this is only emergency solution!!!): Take off footwear and soaked socks. Put on dry socks, pull bags over them and put on soaked boots or other footwear. This way PVC material will temporarily prevent socks from getting wet. Let me repeat that this is only emergency and temporary solution, as the foot won't breathe and will sweat more than before!
Lately I also use waterproof bags, available in better stocked mountaineering shops,... Get them in various sizes and they surely keep contents dry. Inside I always have two PVC bags, lighter (matches), tissues, battery, in emergency also tobacco with papersnasmeh, money with documents and GSM phone, which can be crucial for survival. We must realize that sometimes it's better to find a safe spot on the mountain and even overnight, than descend in thunderstorm (slip, lightning,...). In pathless terrain fog can be very dangerous!!! Here too better wait for improvement of conditions, than get lost and wander aimlessly, perhaps unwittingly even to death. Some say it's not good to mull over such black scenarios!? I think we must always anticipate what can go wrong on a certain path and equip and prepare in advance for the worst conditions and scenarios. Such preparation for the tour can be crucial for successful end of the path. Don't let ourselves be swayed by debates saying: it was meant to be so, such is fate,...zmeden Our life is in our hands and we control it ourselves!!! Don't let thoughtlessness and unpreparedness take it from us!!! And SAFE journey to all hikers!

Yes, on Saturday I went along the hunting path towards Bosova grapa and then up to the top of Brana along it. The path is extremely scenic, especially the southern ridge from the top of the gully to the summit. Extremely, and about the surprise on the way back over Kamniško sedlo I won't even speak. I met a mouflon, which I saw for the first time (in nature), even though I've been hiking our peaks for about 20 years. Definitely a nice circular tour.

Thanks to Volku and Kopronu for the info. I made good use of the hunting path, and it's even more interesting than the marked one on KS.
