Through the valley of seven lakes to Prehodavci.
Next day via Hribarice over NW ridge to summit. Descended past Planina Laz to Planina Blato. Approach to Thick Peak via Hribarice requires good visibility.

Lakes already freezing and creaking.

Thick Peak and Ogradi, 6.6.2025

The wish was to catch a nice Friday in June for vacation and mountain rambling. It worked. Both my better half and I were here for the first time. I had this tour planned for a long time, expected a lot from it, but we got back all and even more. I can say that both of us are quite enchanted. We were also lucky with the weather. The western and southern Julians were cloud-wrapped all day, while in the central ones it was clear as per the forecast. Bravo, forecasters. Nature is in full swing, larches are deep green, snow has melted, everything is flowering, and temperatures are still not too high. On the way, we observed chamois and listened to marmots. nasmeh

Ascent route classic past Planina v Lazu. No mention-worthy snow on the ascent path anymore.

For descent from the forepeak to the notch, several variants are offered. Since it was my first time here, I did some "exploring" and tried all three variants that I tracked down. I first descended to the notch via the "middle" variant - a partly crumbly and relatively exposed gully/couloir, about 10 m left of the "standard" spot for descent to the notch. I wouldn't recommend this middle variant. With all the other passages available, this is completely unnecessary exposure. Cairns lead to the northernmost variant. Now there's also a fixed rope there. It is very short, but at the same time quite awkward for descent. Mine is not used to such moves without belay, and since it wasn't pleasant for her, we turned back to the forepeak and went to the notch via the southern bypass. Otherwise, on the ascent back, she had no problem at the same spot. Anyway, near the southern bypass, I noticed a 3rd variant – a fairly comfortable chimney where climbing certainly does not exceed grade I. I tried it both for ascent and descent, and for my taste, it is by far the best variant for direct passage to the notch.

From Debeli vrh back, we descended on the northern side from the forepeak over the red scree. In the second part, there was a long snow tongue in two parts there, very welcome for glissading down.

The addition of Ogradi was the real cherry on top; there we sunned ourselves a bit on the grass in the lee, with dreamy views towards Planina Krstenica and the valley.

We didn't meet a living soul on the entire path today.
First views of today's objective.1

First part of the ascent. What is in the photo is all the snow on the path up.3
Climbing up... Slowly but surely :)4
The Southern Julian Alps were shrouded in fog all day.5
When such views also open to the other side, one just has to snap such a photo. Even if it's perhaps a bit edited :)6
Tested variants for descent to the notch. Little figures lead to 1., 2. not recommended, I like chimney 3. best (hidden behind the rock on the photo).7
From the other side the forepeak looks impressive.8
Here we are. Debeli vrh, 2390 plus 1m :)9
On the return, uphill the little lady without trouble...:)10
The mentioned southernmost variant - gully/chimney that allows the most comfortable descent into the notch.11

...and over the softened snow tongues.13
Yippee....14
We are approaching Lazovški preval, view back. Right is the descent route.15

Bravo for the tour!!
What about the 4th option - bypass?

How come no wire rope is "installed" on that gully, or at least pegs? To prevent any unnecessary accident. This peak has been stirring my imagination for years, but that notch worries me... fear of slipping on descent.zadrega

Just what's missing is installing cables and protections on pathless peaks. Pathless is pathless, occasional cairn for orientation, and scrambling suitable for the tour's experience level, of course with gear and knowledge of using it as needed.

Pathless areas interesting for ibex are already spiked with pitons and ropes by them. Thank f***, that not all are like that...and some genuine rock without iron remains.velik nasmeh

The bypass of the notch is completely easy. On return the gully upwards is no big deal either.nasmeh
You can continue from the top along the western ridge…

The most beautiful and easiest approach is along the pathless western ridge.

@brett: 4th option (notch bypass) is completely unproblematic for average hiker. Plenty of descriptions in this thread and trip reports: https://www.hribi.net/izlet/planina_blato_debeli_vrh_cez_planino_v_lazu/1/383/531

When above the notch, sniff around and see what suits you (if anything). If not appealing, turn and take bypass. Can retry through notch on return - upwards easier.

Gully (3) great natural passage, no big deal. Pleasure to go through up or down. God forbid rope or piton there - that's the charm. Agree with turbo. Too much iron already. nasmeh

@brett I too first "feared" this notch because I had a dog who couldn't go there. Then read about bypass and second time reached Debeli vrh summit no problem, with two little tails at heels. So if notch crawl not appealing, bypass below is elegant solution mežikanje

Friday from Planina Blato classic to Debeli vrh. Pity fog hid desired western ridge continuation. Nice to see ibex group just below summit. Path otherwise unremarkable.
