Thick Peak and Ogradi, 6.6.2025 The wish was to catch a nice Friday in June for vacation and mountain rambling. It worked. Both my better half and I were here for the first time. I had this tour planned for a long time, expected a lot from it, but we got back all and even more. I can say that both of us are quite enchanted. We were also lucky with the weather. The western and southern Julians were cloud-wrapped all day, while in the central ones it was clear as per the forecast. Bravo, forecasters. Nature is in full swing, larches are deep green, snow has melted, everything is flowering, and temperatures are still not too high. On the way, we observed chamois and listened to marmots. Ascent route classic past Planina v Lazu. No mention-worthy snow on the ascent path anymore. For descent from the forepeak to the notch, several variants are offered. Since it was my first time here, I did some "exploring" and tried all three variants that I tracked down. I first descended to the notch via the "middle" variant - a partly crumbly and relatively exposed gully/couloir, about 10 m left of the "standard" spot for descent to the notch. I wouldn't recommend this middle variant. With all the other passages available, this is completely unnecessary exposure. Cairns lead to the northernmost variant. Now there's also a fixed rope there. It is very short, but at the same time quite awkward for descent. Mine is not used to such moves without belay, and since it wasn't pleasant for her, we turned back to the forepeak and went to the notch via the southern bypass. Otherwise, on the ascent back, she had no problem at the same spot. Anyway, near the southern bypass, I noticed a 3rd variant – a fairly comfortable chimney where climbing certainly does not exceed grade I. I tried it both for ascent and descent, and for my taste, it is by far the best variant for direct passage to the notch. From Debeli vrh back, we descended on the northern side from the forepeak over the red scree. In the second part, there was a long snow tongue in two parts there, very welcome for glissading down. The addition of Ogradi was the real cherry on top; there we sunned ourselves a bit on the grass in the lee, with dreamy views towards Planina Krstenica and the valley. We didn't meet a living soul on the entire path today.
