In my profile all published pics are taken with a phone. I always shoot in RAW format, like I do with my DSLR. With one of these phone pics I entered a photo contest on dpreview.com photo site. All other entries were made with DSLRs and similar cameras, but my pic got 2nd place. I think you can make a successful pic with a phone too.

I enjoy the nice photos that many of you take and would like to get a camera that is not too big. What do you recommend?

There are lots of quality cameras that are not too heavy. For any advice, at least three pieces of data are needed: - how much money can be spent on the purchase - maximum weight - image quality expected. Smartphones are OK until zooming. Practically all cameras make good pics in good light conditions, then quality drops sharply. dpreview.com has tons of data, tests, and reviews, and with some effort everyone will find something suitable for themselves. Nice day! Darok

The D700 is excellent and also very durable, and you can get used ones very cheaply. It's otherwise one of the best cameras that Nikon has had in history. Still pro and top for that money. The only problem is it's quite heavy especially with some larger lens on, but that's just a minus for all DSLRs. Otherwise some good digital compact with more zoom. Personally I'm a photographer with lots of gear (DSLR) but to the mountains I go maybe only a few times a year with DSLR because it's simply too heavy and too awkward. I always have iPhone with me which makes excellent photos, only minus is it doesn't have quality zoom, but oh well.

I know that a lot has been said about this in the past already, but still... At home I have DSLR Canon camera and quite a few lenses. I've dragged it with me to the hills a few times, and then I always cursed it, so I'm looking for some smaller and lighter alternative. Is there among you some photography lover who is satisfied with some compact or semi-compact version of camera for hiking and would recommend it to me?

If you don't need much zoom, Canon g7x is top, similarly also Sony RX100. I prefer Canon myself, because Canon's Movie Digest function I personally like a lot.

Those pictures of the rescue helicopter I made yesterday with the smallest Canon camera. I take it with me because I can zoom 25 times. But the pictures aren't much. It's small and handy. I remember I bought it two years ago in Big Bang for 180 euros. It was the only one available. The friendly saleswoman reserved it for me.
