Which dig. camera do you use?
How satisfied are you with it, no picture will be out of place in this thread?

Canon Powershot S5 IS
now you have newer model Powershot SX20IS
one of the better compact cameras on the market
if you buy DSLR you'll first have to learn to photograph with it, then get used to extra 1-2kg luggage in backpack

Canon Powershot: various models, as I've smashed several recently

Wish: DSLR. Would have one but still too oversized and heavy.

My best pics nasmeh:

I too have Canon Powershot SX120, had its predecessor SX110 which I smashed. So decision for newer model same brand wasn't hard. Great camera for reasonable price.

Panasonic FT1, shock and water resistant. Optics not super but fits every pocket (always ready), put in snow works (tested) in real frost and of course shooting in rain wind snow no problem. Plus HD video. With smart program use makes very nice pics:

Before had bigger Olympus with big zoom (really good optics), but before you start shooting say chamois it's already far. This current one really handy for any weather any position.

Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ28, before that Canon Ixus 400. The old one was really small and handy, but unfortunately it died. Panasonic is a so-called "Bridge" camera, so neither compact nor SLR but something in between. Light, but quite big for climbing trips, for that I sometimes use my phone (Samsung S8000 Jet).
Pictures are in my profile.

Since I'm more or less a layman in cameras, I have an interesting question about their lifespan. Fact is, that mountaineers' cameras often don't survive full use due to falls into depths, damage in rain, forgotten on the mountain.
My Canon 590IS has now survived almost 5000 photos in two years and shows no sign of dying soon. I ask expert photographers how many photos on average a camera can achieve in its life. Of course LCD screen, lens motor etc. can fail, which I don't count in the original question. Thanks for an interesting answer and best regards from Rok.nasmeh

I own Canon EOS 400D for four years already and made less than 7000 pics. I carry it always to the mountains, even in winter(snow, cold, moisture,...), in rain, while climbing,... Looks like new, works like new and I doubt it will leave me in the next 5 years. True, I take good care of it. Usually I take 30-40 pics per trip, of which on average 5 make the shortlist. Due to good resolution and pixel density, quite some pics are hanging on walls in 0.5x0.4m format.

If anyone wonders why I bother carrying this big heavy wonder to the mountains:

The lifespan of a camera is determined by the shutter durability. The shutter determines the length of the time interval during which the light sensor is exposed to light. Latest camera models promise already such durable shutters that they should make 300,000 shots without problem. Probably few of us will make that many with one camera. So the camera will likely succumb earlier to fall, moisture, dust etc ...
Even more likely, in a couple years (even if the old camera still works fine) some new model will tempt us, as every day some interesting novelty appears in this field.
I have Canon EOS D40, and Mark II for a couple of months. Lenses from 17 to 500 mm. But the backpack is quite heavy. Yearly I make some 30,000 pics, of course delete many.

I can say that Nikon DSLR (D5000) lasts according to data around 100,000 clicks. New model D7000 allegedly already 150,000. Currently I still own Nikon D5000, three lenses, tripod, and more and they all go with me to the hills. Backpack is therefore additionally weighted, pics per trip 300-500, yearly too many nasmeh: I also changed my way of going to the hills, instead of fast walking (rushing) with enjoying nature and searching for wonderful motifs.

Please, can you tell me something about the resistance of "digital cameras" to low temperatures. Son has Sony camera, but it doesn't behave the best.

Look, as far as my experience goes in low temperatures problems are only with cameras that have batteries (normal or rechargeable AA). I use camera with accumulator (Li-ion), no problems, I think here it's not all about the brand (I have NIKON). Try keeping it warm not in backpack, maybe you'll have more success (for a few pics).

Thanks to both FOR the information (if there was more, say). I don't know why people like to write "...on the information..." and similar.

I've never had problems with the camera working at low temperatures (even at -10°C at 3000m), only condensation on the lenses bothers me when you take the camera out of a warm place (backpack).

Otiv: I had an Olympus, it froze on Velika at -8, switched to Sony (worked flawlessly at -30), retired, before that Pentax (died), now 2x DSLR Nikon, which also work fine at -16.

I got Canon IXUS 1000 HS. Battery endurance is good, above expectations per specs where it says ca. 150 photos per charge, I always do well over 200. Yesterday first time camera in minus, went to Krvavec, around -12 at top of Zvoh and camera worked without issue. Did over 200 photos and battery not drained. No spare battery yet as not available, new version again. Satisfied with camera.

Been using Panasonic Lumix TZ5 for years. All my pics on this forum taken with it. Has Li-ion battery for ca 400 shots and never any issues with it, even in winter. Carry camera in pouch on body not somewhere warmer due to moisture and condensation. My opinion those two harm camera more than cold, plus wait for lenses to defog jezen Only thing at extreme cold is slower mechanism and maybe one less shot due to higher energy use. If want more shots prefer spare battery over heating camera. Otherwise made well over 20,000 shots with it, survived several-meter free fall (no pouch jezen) down Cjajnik rocks.
