Even better, of course speaking for myself, I think 17-50 f2.8, unless you need a longer tele lens. I most prefer fixed lenses like e.g. 35mm, 50 mm, 85mm, of course all at least f 1.8 when talking about Nikons. I also have a zoom lens but it's often stowed away because of weight, size etc. I most prefer 35mm or 50mm regarding crop factor 1.5; 17-50 f 2.8 because of the range that's most common.

Thanks for the answers. For now I only have 18-105, because I bought DSLR last year before summer. I shoot practically everything alive, so I'm often at 105 mm. It's true though that for good landscape photography I'd survive with 16-85 too. Then comes some brighter lens with prime focal length.

#Izidor2 17-50 2.8 or even better 24-70 2.8 are top lenses of course, but I think neither is suitable for mountains. With the first 50mm is a bit too short for me, while 24-70 is too heavy (well, at least for me). Sometimes even 85mm is too short, but really only sometimes. As for bright lenses, they are top-notch of course, but not for mountains, except for some photo trip.. hehe.. And what cameras do you use (Izidor2 and Tomažke)?

Yeah, of course I won't carry f1.8 to the mountains. I own Nikon D7000.

I personally use Nikon D90 and also take f1.8 lens to mountains (bokeh you know) in case of strong light then Cir.Pola filter on or something similar. As for lens weight, decide yourself what to carry and what not. I for example rather take two primes than a quality (read f2.8) zoom lens just because of weight . When I really want to be compact I still have older Canon S5IS which still makes nice pics..

Well in my opinion the aperture 1.8 isn't the problem, more the weight of zoom f2.8 lenses. You can easily have 35/1.8 with you, you won't even notice it Otherwise I mostly have Sigma 10-20 on the camera. UWA rocks!

Well, the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 isn't too heavy, has around 400 g and it's also quality, unfortunately I don't own it yet, while I have Sigma 20-40 f2.8 which has a good kilo and is quite heavy

My photo gear for mountains and also otherwise for everything else is: - Canon 450D - kit lens 15~85 - telephoto Canon 70~300 USM IS - strap for carrying telephoto and other accessories. Of course I really want Canon 15~85 IS USM, but this glass is so expensive that I'm still hesitating ..... If anyone is interested what this gear and my small self can do in every opportunity, you can see here https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/myphotos

In my opinion you'll get the most useful tips on e-fotografija. With UWA it's not necessary that the angles are crazy. Especially with panoramas they can perform excellently For portraits they are just not suitable, I agree with that

You guys are good dragging DSLRs + all gear into the mountains. It doesn't even cross my mind, especially not on longer trips... Then I have to settle for IXUS he he . True though, then I'm shortchanged, mostly on dynamic range which is very important in mountains, then also on millimeters that often run out Regards!

Yes, I agree with you about those magic moments... But just having it in the backpack probably doesn't count? Just need to buy some special strap or bag or something (since it's almost necessary to have the camera right away..)? And on this occasion I'd ask a bit, how do you solve that? Because I also have DSLR and do photography as hobby, but on long serious trips where there's already plenty of weight on the back, I haven't taken it yet... Regards!

Similar to MajaO - over the shoulder, just that it's also in a protective bag. On some really nasty parts of the path it goes into the backpack...

Maja, for starters buy a really good book by Oskar Dolenc - Composition of the picture. Otherwise... practice makes master. You can get the book via internet on e-fotografija, about 15 euros.

MajaO, you're thinking smart to join some course. True, you can learn a lot from video presentations, books, forums, etc.. but, you learn the most from people who master it, who do it. Once you master the basics (which means shooting on A, P, S and M; light metering, focusing) it's time for composition (rule of thirds or golden ratio). When buying books.. be careful with their content. In bookstore you get a lot, and prices aren't that high. Personally I have at home and studied all photo books that are written or translated into Slovenian. First I'd recommend Scott Kelby books, then some Photography Bible, as well as 101 top tips for digital photography, ... While those two books by Oskar (Composition and Camera) are in my opinion just promoting e-fotografija... etc. Of course you can read some basics on my website M-foto.si

Scott Kelby is really great. In a very clear way he shows the essentials, what you need from it, but you decide yourself anyway. And now buying the package of all three books is much cheaper than individual books. He also knows what marketing is ..... maybe the best of all. P.S. The two books Fotografirajmo digitalno by author Nikolaj Pečenka were also a great help to me in understanding digital photography.

If I think where I use the camera everywhere, a new one would be "pitied". I take photos only for easier display. This year at the beginning of winter in company, when we returned from Krn summit to the parking lot I realized I don't have the camera, so it stayed somewhere up on Krn slope but I didn't leave it. Feet on the path and somewhere on 3/4 of the way I found it. Now it adorns my room, it stopped working. Later I bought the same used model. I use Canon G6, it's 8 years old, but still makes nice pictures (the number is fairly unknown to me, because it only counts to 10000, then starts over, I don't know how many times it has rolled over - maybe close to 30 or 40 thousand). I don't plan to replace it soon, because even now I don't use its potential and still most photos I make with auto setting. My pictures this year

I have Nikon D5000, with Sigma 18-200 lens. For me it's great, not exactly small and light, but still goes easily with me even to the mountains Some of my mountain and other photos taken with it: My blog
