Hiking and weight loss

I'm more of a beginner, and I'm interested in your experiences when you started doing hikes more regularly, say a 3-hour walk-hike in the hills every week.

How did that affect your weight?

I must say I have positive experiences. You just need to eat less and be regularly physically active. Hiking is already one way. I tend to overweight, running doesn't suit me, but with hiking in the dry season I nicely reduce weight. I start with mid-mountains with half-day hikes, continue until late autumn with high mountains at least once a week if the weather allows. Hiking is a great pleasure for me. Go boldly!

I think that this (say weekly 3-hour walk-hike to the hills) will have no effect on reducing body weight.
One should run at least 3 times a week. At least 40 minutes and change diet. Then after 14 days the scale starts moving down.
One must stick to it disciplined!
In between some hike to the hills..

I agree with Geppo.
Once a week is too little to notice anything in body weight loss. And it depends on the intensity of the hike (heart rate control). It's not always best uphill at full speed (to the max) and not too slow either. From my experience I can say that with 3x-4x weekly hikes of 2-3h I lost 8kg without any diet and denying food.
The most important is self-discipline to stick to it regularly, despite the weather.!!
That's why I regularly visit Mala Planina every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, even if I eat a sausage with horseradish at Jarški dom.nasmeh

It's true, once a week - 3 hours will be too little. Three times a week for 2-3 hours will show well, already after a couple of months.
Of course in the first month start with light weight in the backpack and gentle paths.

In 8 months I myself with my will, knowledge, healthy diet, exercise lost 35 kg.

THE ESSENCE is healthy nutrition, without it there are no good results.

Do you think the doctor helped me, even before the enormous weight I had to do a bunch of checks, they found nothing, the doctor said nothing, I decided to lose weight myself, today after 6 months I still have the same kilos.

It wasn't easy!!!
But I know all strategies on how to successfully lose weight and keep the kilos.

Of course, you need to work on cardio (running, fast walking, HIIT, appropriate heart rate or not, because the higher it is the greater the consumption of fat and muscles or with lower, more fat is burned and less muscles but it's harder to work at higher level, I preferred fast walking on varied mid-mountain terrain....) + work on strength to keep muscles.
Can be with bodyweight, exercises on youtube.

Engaging in only one type of sport all year is difficult and often impossible.
Reasons are mainly weather, travel time to the starting point, monotony of the same hill and resulting boredom.
It's good to choose several different sports where different muscle groups work and choose a suitable one according to season and weather. It can often be nicely combined: triathlon disciplines (running, road bike, swimming), hiking, MTB, fast walking, nordic walking, last but not least fitness for rainy generous weeks.
The initial 3-5-hour weekly trotting will be a good base for later possible extension to more hours. Most important are continuity (no more than 2 day breaks), moderation of training, proper nutrition (important meals are breakfast and post-workout meal), rest at least 2 days/week (walk is rest) and maximum enjoyment in training.
Conclusion: let it not be a one-year fly, let it get under your skin and become part of everyday life, as analogy it's not 100m run, but marathon (long distance run). Good luck.

I agree with what's written. It's always a combination of moderate and healthy diet and regular exercise 3-4 times a week.

Personally, I strengthen muscles twice a week on pilates, which helps especially with strengthening abdominal and back muscles, which you really need for hiking in the mountains. Since there's work during the week, some afternoon I jump on a smaller hill around Polhov Gradec or Šmarna gora, keeping a sharp pace for some effect. For the weekend, I plan something more serious, i.e. longer hike/ascent.

It shows a lot, especially in how you feel, also in kilos, most importantly in self-confidence, as you become flexible, get fitness, exercise becomes fun and a way of life. In the mountains the mind clears, stress especially disappears early in the morning among the awakening morning and chirping of feathered companions on the way. Go bravely and persistently, the mountains richly reward every effort!

I lose 2kg or more on every tour, but quickly gain them back, I run 2x a week (amateurishly), I try to climb, hike or otherwise "walk" some tour every weekend. It used to be different (even 7x a week in the hills), now it's different, like all mortals I hope for a nice weekend. Otherwise I eat what I like, eat several times a day, make sure to regularly intake harmless fats and proteins velik nasmeh, lots of carbs and as little sugar as possible, if any then in form of sucrose and dextrose. No problem surviving a day in the hills without food, just as long as I have something for hydration. I recommend two oranges, a liter of water and a teaspoon of salt! Maybe some energy bar (frutabela, any other cereal bar...) On that one can function even 15 hours if needed...
Since I live in such an area, even a 2000m peak doesn't bother me. Besides what's written, hills offer much more... But we've written about that!

Best, Juš

I'm completely new to this forum and the following interests me. Reading this thread, I realized that hiking could help me lose excess kilos. So far I've been using various aids for weight loss in the form of dietary supplements, which do work. However, they only go as far as supplements, I recreate very little because I have too many kilos for running, and no motivation for walking on flat ground. Since I'm not physically prepared at all, what trips do you recommend at first?
Thanks for the advice

Easy paths for one or at most two hours one way. Find some (here on Hribi) near home. Go several times a week. Different path each time so you don't get bored.

Weight loss pills, just another thing to rip off the naive and make fat profits on their account. First thing is to empty the fridge and when you're tempted to eat something, open the fridge, disappointedly find nothing sensible in it, close it, put on sneakers and go for a walk. Less money spent on food, no need for weight loss pills and save again, weight starts decreasing. Self-discipline and self-discipline again, and it costs nothing.

same as lying on the couch? come oneek
I tried... 2-3 hours three times a week 500m difference, sometimes only 300. I became a real adventurerzavijanje z očmi and weight increased by 5kg after half a year. Excellent in short.
But you have to be very careful with knees especially on descents! You're heavy so choose gentle paths - at least downhill...
In short, the main thing is to be in nature and move... For starters forget all sorts of records, focus mainly on "outings" into nature so to speak. So first you have to incorporate this change into your lifestyle and get used to it, then start working on pulse, muscle strength, lung volume, calories etc.
But I agree once a week is too little, unless you add some other sport... not chess.jezik

I also started with hiking in the hills three years ago. At the beginning it's tough, then you get a bit fit and it goes better and faster. Especially for descent I recommend hiking poles, because they reduce the weight burdening the knees by up to 30% and thus prevent overload.

Now for a year I've been running regularly and also started cycling and swimming. Mainly so as not to burden always the same body parts and prevent boredom and consequent quitting of sports activity.

But all together won't bring weight loss if you don't reduce food intake and don't eat properly and healthy food.

I still have to lose quite a few kg, but with time that result will come too. For now my health has improved a lot.

Everything sweet makes fat. Especially if it's an addition to food and number of calories.
It seems to me the whole art is in how much food intake there is. Everything else is theory. Movement is certainly healthy, but doesn't affect weight much if we eat properly alongside. I know people who don't "stretch" at all, but have no weight problems because they don't overdo food.

Don't worry if you have some extra kilos, my scale in 2009 showed almost 115kg at average height (now 78kg). At that weight I had lots of health issues like (pressure 170/95, skin diseases, cramps, blood often ran from nose, strong chest pains, muscle pains....600m elevation gain was my max achievement).

If what you wrote holds and you achieved it in four years (significant weight loss, good fitness), you could recommend your recipe to many!
