@KP, you won't believe it, but I once sprained my ankle wearing high Garmont Tower GTX. Then I completely stopped with high boots. If I'd had low and more agile shoes then, I'd have released weight on the leg where the ankle started twisting in time, but instead I just went ahead. With these low ones you have to walk a bit differently to not twist ankles, especially on scree. But you're much more agile. For example, as soon as I notice something wrong, I release all weight on the leg (kneel), which starts twisting and shift weight to the other leg. It's completely automatic for me, takes a fraction of a second and I don't think at all. Don't know your experiences with Meindl boots, but I had them once and the sole literally disintegrated. Not slipped but after one year it actually fell apart in the middle. With Mammut I also had issue (not alone), when the eyelets holding laces flew off. And that before one year of use and not many km. Luckily store refunded me.

I've always bet on high boots at least so far; multiple times my ankle would almost certainly have gone its own way if it had been open, especially on rocks. @iUnknown, hearing this about your experience really scares me; somehow I thought there's no chance something would happen to the ankle in quality high boots. At least so far, knock on wood, no issues. But I'll obviously have to choose new ones and seriously take time for it; the experience with the last ones sobered me up. Shame about Meindl, still plan to try them, thanks for the tip, @gorolazka. Same for Fitwell Cortino. I've never had either on my feet; I'm really curious about the experiences.

KP, for 20 years I swear by Meindl and Fitwell, lately on Fitwell. The sole wears out faster than with Meindl, but it's more affordable price-wise. Since it's leather, it adapts to the foot, even to additional bones.

Option: you have a size too small, so before descent you don't tie tight enough and foot slides/bangs forward. Or maybe you lift toes up on descent? One runner has that running style, lifts big toe up and constantly has toenail problems and with that tears/bruises fabric even before the sole needs changing.... Otherwise for such hikes a solid low hiking shoe. I don't have boots at all, because for mine up to a bit over 2000 m (Peca, Raduha, Olševa) they are quite sufficient. Haven't been on via ferratas yet. On scree you can walk nicely, on rocks/stones, even wetter ones, the grip is totally OK. I have about 0.5 size larger, other GTX 1 size larger than my actual foot length. And nothing bangs forward, foot doesn't slide, walks perfectly OK.

@čara, they seem just right to me, but obviously I should have at least half a size larger. I don't think I lift my big toe upwards, at least it doesn't seem so. It's especially interesting to me, since on flat terrain I don't feel the toenails at all or they don't tighten or cause blisters. With Lowa Approach I'm very satisfied anyway, just the soles are a bit worn already, although as said I wear high ones because I'm afraid for my ankles; via ferratas are e.g. totally out of my league, honestly. Obviously I'll have to wait for my toenails to grow back and then probably try at least half a size larger.

Request for help: for several years I wore Lowa Renegade MID well, bought at Promontana, normal width. I was extremely satisfied with them, same with the low ones. Then the little toes started bothering me, and anyway I have a wide foot, so I ordered the same wide model in the store. After 9 months without delivery, I ordered them online from Bergfreunde. When I placed the old and new side by side on the floor, I noticed that the soles are exactly the same width. Now I'm in a dilemma, keep or return. Someone told me that's normal, the difference is in the upper part. Does anyone have experience with a similar case? Thanks in advance.

Does anyone have experience with Alpina NUPTSE 623N1 167e (link)? I'm particularly interested in quality and durability (maybe some personal experiences?) Alternatives are Mammut KENTO HIGH GTX MEN 164e (link) and maybe even better choice La Sportiva TRANGO GUIDE EVO GTX 171e (link).

klukec, personal experience with the Alpina boots you mentioned .... from my side, buying these boots was a big mistake or missed investment, as after the second trip (snowy) they started "cracking at the seams". They took them for repair, but it only worsened things on the next trip. Mildly put, they didn't honestly last even one season. Too bad, because once their products served me long and well. Tamara

I wrote to them 10 days ago, no response. By the packaging the new ones are undoubtedly WIDE, but it's unlikely they'd accidentally put NORMAL in the box. I can't find a width marking on the shoe itself.

Alpina is no longer what it used to be. I suspect they have some bad glue and worse materials. Well, materials aren't what they used to be many places either (no economic sense if your chest lasts 30 years). That's why I don't buy footwear online. And from clothes only pajamas or nightshirt. You have to try everything, then take it.

@serznoz Lowa response... >> If a Lowa boot is a Wide Width there will be, "W" stitched into the tongue of the boot, if the boot is a Narrow Width there will be an, "S" stitched into the tongue of the boot, if the boot is a standard Medium Width there will be nothing stitched into the tongue of the boot. We've attached some photos of this so you can see examples of what this looks like. If we can be of any further assistance please let us know, thank you for your time and we hope you have a wonderful rest of your day! <<

Thanks, palček for the great effort. The new ones have W, the old ones have no marking. I'll contact them again.

Hello, I'm wondering if with Tibet you also care for that inner white leather? Do you grease it with something or no need? Otherwise I just spray the boot occasionally.

I don't have Tibet otherwise. But the inner side I grease 1x a year with beeswax or similar, there the heel part or what can be reached by hand. I pay more care to the outside for impregnation. And there also with wax 1x-2x yearly, and if there's some strong downpour, wet for walking, then after it dries also with impregnation spray.

Do you suggest something better, lighter, but still high and warm and light shoe with excellent shock absorption on asphalt??? Thanks in advance for any useful info. Uroš

I'm very satisfied with this shoe. Excellent cushioning, breathability, lightness... There has been quite some asphalt, rocks (even scrambling up to II), gravel (even coarse scree) and tall wet grass, and it always performed excellently: https://www.iglusport.si/stream-gtx-surround
