past Calvary: only today noticed that on the Calvary chapel there's a little box with a logbook (just today some person signed the 150th time this year..). Path: ground deeply frozen, hard icy base, over which there's a few cm of snow, -just enough to hide something slippery.. Therefore especially on descent in the upper part (by the fixed cable) I recommend caution, or possibly use of at least 4-point crampons. Best heinz!

Today conditions a bit better: no snow on the path, only partially icy base, so caution under summit needed (ice possible under leaves), otherwise generally pleasant for this time.

Path from Straža or Javornik trodden only to Šporn, then through woods to where we join marked Ukova- Dom Pristava path. From there, to main viewpoint nicely trodden, further to summit less so, but ok. Continued to Dom Pristava, drank some and returned old path by road to Trebež. For descent by cable recommend crampons, start from Ukova.

past Calvary, or from Ukova, today nicely trodden.

Today from Jesenice over Ukovo, past Calvary, over Deer Rock, to Dom Pristava and back the same path: At the fixed cables crampons needed due to ice (descent), ice axe not superfluous. Otherwise path somewhat trodden to Pristava.

Today: above approx 800m on the path still quite some snow, which at the moment is quite loose, in places dangerous for falls. No danger of serious avalanches for sure, here and there something small triggers (very small). Path to main viewpoint trodden, further not. Towards summit crampons recommended.

Today I checked the possibility of direct approach to the main viewpoint via the steep southern rocky route. I can say there's no path here (at least I didn't come across it), the variant is demanding, as the terrain is steep, crumbly etc. Maybe pd Jesenice could consider building a secured path. I think it would be quite interesting. For now no. So, not recommended.. Regards, heinz!

Today I was somewhat misled myself while reading a text by a known Jesenice guy, talking about the former climbing kindergarten on little Deer Rock, and approach through Špornov graben. Through the latter I headed straight to the summit and got quite exhausted, as it stands almost vertically and is crumbly to the end. Curiosity knows no bounds.. Only on the (normal) path down did I realize what the author meant. Definitely not this route. I wouldn't recommend it either. LPH

I'm for now the only one occasionally reporting conditions on our Deer Rock and surroundings: From home over Zastraža, Kozjak, Hlevček, via fixed cables to summit, back over Calvary to Ukovo and Razgledno to friend for beer. Today A. Oldroyd-ova (pop-tv) somewhat screwed us re weather. No sun of course, but just a bit of fog, clouds etc.. Towards summit even slippery, muddy. Otherwise fine. After longer time (due to virus and obligations) for me again a shorter ascent in home area. higher up everywhere -already snow, nothing to do.

For me Deer Rock is fine, and also Lenčkov Špik. It's close, steep enough for building fitness. Just be careful when wet, don't go down that last part. It happens. Nice greetings...

Heinz, your descriptions and pics are great. Know that the effort is not in vain. We'll come to see and enjoy the views at first opportunity. Good luck!

Thanks to both! I'm really glad I'm not the only (virtually active) one from our area on this forum! I like JK because it's so close - right under my nose, it offers what Majdag says - something... And also suitable as a starting goal for some continuation towards Španov vrh, Pristava or Golica. Lado Brišar describes it somewhere as just right "šodrastega". "Enough", he says, "that no path to its summit is suitable for a yoked cow" . But all are nevertheless "quite flat".

I openly admit that I first discovered Jelenkamen here and I'd like to climb to the summit, especially if accompanied by such a human friend as in one of the pictures. It must really be nice, the pictures are wonderful. My next trip will surely be Jelenkamen. Thanks for the presentation and good luck!

No problem, tisa! If we can match times, we can go together. Tell when you plan, so we see.. Best, heinz!

Many thanks for the invitation, heinz. Currently my father, who is 90 years old, is seriously ill. So I don't plan any hikes in the near future. Otherwise, I don't know how I would keep up with you and Reksij, because judging by your writing with tips and pictures you are a real chamois and I don't know if you would be thrilled with me puffing and staggering behind you. Best regards to both, tisa.

On Monday I took a walk to Kozjak, into Špornov graben and finally to the (this time) real so-called Mali Jelenkamen. An acquaintance from Zaštreka finally (I hope) informed me where the so-called Mali Jelenkamen and Hlevček, which our Lado Brišar mentions in his "Brezpotja" blog, are supposed to be according to the "old ones". The first is a balcony about 250 m below the main viewpoint, the second is a plain - forest clearing where there are hunting mangers for game. Both things are located almost directly below the main rocky viewpoint, or left of Špornov graben. That one by Kozjak on the right is the eastern ridge... or something else. Špornov graben was definitely lonely on Monday. I didn't climb up it to the top. I just went to visit it. It's always nice.

Heinz, if you go from Zaštreka, from Tomšičeva gora, first there's hlevček, then you climb up a narrow path and come to a grass-covered rock. Is that M. J.? Is it maybe marked on your circular route (6.9.010-blog)? Thanks for your descriptions, and best regards Majda.

It's not marked on that picture from the blog. For Hlevček I thought of the eastern ridge, which does have its own summit, but lies behind Kozjak above Javornik.. But as it seems, I was wrong, because my acquaintance from Zaštreka told me that Hlevček is that clearing on the left of Špornov graben (past the spring intake). There are those mangers. When you continue along the path westward, you come to that - as you say, grass-covered rock (balconček). That should be Mali Jk..., not the so-called Babji zob below the summit of Kozjak above Javornik, which some simply called Jelenkamen. I hope that my dilemmas about the names are resolved with this. Best regards! h

...Jelenkamen, L.Špik, Dole... A little before Kalvarija, every year under the roots of a spruce there are nativity scenes made of clay figures. Otherwise the path Jelenkamen, L.Špik is dry, very frozen. Very little snow. From Dole to Kalvarija there is snow. Crampons almost necessary. Nice day, even nicer that the birds are already chirping, wow SPRING
