Towards Komen summit probably around 40 cm of snow,(after last rain maybe less) path from Rastke via Bezovec to Komen summit usually trodden. Nicely marked. From Komen down to Travnik in winter very rarely a track made, from Travnik via Robnikova planina path also probably trodden. In the given conditions we know that now everything is more southern and wet.

lakkon,

was today on Komen, snow at least 70-80cm maybe somewhere even 1m. But super track made by sled and walks nicely, I went from direction of hut on Smrekovec. Lp and safe step

Yes, super path, that's why it's Natura 2000. If moderator hadn't deleted posts and pics from few years ago you could see on pics how it looks, and read various opinions. After that all agree, even those responsible in valley, that this is no longer a nature area. Maybe need to send something elsewhere too, ...zmeden

Look I just wanted to say what the conditions are like since I was there walking. That's all. I just prefer not wading snow up to my butt, don't care who made the "track". Just wanted to report actual conditions to users. Everyone has their opinion... if I offended someone, next time I'll keep comment to myself. That's all from me, Lp

Today to Komen on Bbrina&Lojze paths.
Wonderful starting point below Planinc homestead. Past homestead on nice forest path to Goba hotel ( *****stars ).
Continuation to Mrzle vode hospital and on to Hlipovec. Spring weather, chanterelles along path. Wonderful forests, abundance of sparkling streams. Higher up more mists that sun pierces momentarily. Didn't go ridge because four-legger Čarli was along.
Komen in mist, moments in sun. To summit 2:30h.
Forest skid trails on path like tank division drove over...
Upper descent part on marked. Lower part Lojze leads on hidden trails. Leads to prominent cliff with view to our start. Below in gorge waterfall roars, heard far around. Steeeeply descend to gorge and cross under waterfall. Čarli bravely fords foaming raging water.
After 5 hours back at start. Muddy to knees.
Nice trip with great start. Snow just trace. Lots mud, some trails nearly impassable. Shelter (chapel) on Komna has no protective doors anymore and chapel interior now exposed to weather...
Nice morning trip!!

If the waterfalls two months ago roared in the gorge, now there is complete silence.
MH power plants are idle, waterfalls chained in ice.
Waterfall from pic. 21 (November 2016) not fully frozen yet, others are.
Nice trip for cck. 3 hours of wandering at morning -17°C.

From Rastke near Ljubno a track has been made to the top of Komna. When you turn at the church, go a bit further on the road then at the yellow sign for forest road up.

FROM SLEMENA TO KOMEN AND BACK

Yesterday I went to check conditions on Smrekovo plateau. Up to Kramerca there's not much snow, especially where the path goes through, dense forest. On Smrekovec it's like this, where the path runs along the very ridge, there's lots of windblown snow, you quickly get the feel of big waves at sea. Fog accompanied me too, so the cross and chapel on Komna, I didn't find at first. Return was much easier, despite darkness I spent 9 hours walking. lp.

11.1.2017 everything was encased in ice.
Now the situation is completely different. Waterfalls roar loudly and you hear them from afar. Small hydro plants hum merrily.
But in the gorge you see consequences of recent heavy rain. Forest paths badly damaged by torrents.

When you decide for a summer visit to Smrekovo plateau, you know it's a bit special mountain visit from nature's perspective available here, as there's very few flowers decorating meadows, but in return you're charmed by abundant palette of green grass, pastures, forests, soft paths on spruce ground, grassy trails, moss and blueberries with smaller ups and downs. If the day gifts you sun, you also enjoy nice views.. Unlike upper posts in this thread, almost all from winter time, let this be my summer pictorial impression of Smrekovec-Krnes-Komna visit...nasmehmežikanje
The hut on Smrekovec welcomed us in grayness with a cloudy cap.1
The view of Šoštanj and Velenjska lakes was only slightly open like this.2
The view of the green meadow below the hut was refreshing in this grayness.3
Below the hut is a nice educational house.4
Here they teach us about the rocks on Smrekovec, which is of volcanic origin.5
Also something about the roses, which bloom mainly in May and June.6
And also something about the differences between spruce and fir.7
We leave the Dom and set off towards the summit of Smrekovec.8
Along the path, still wet bluebells from the night rain.9
Closer to the summit of Smrekovec, less visibility and increasingly more wind.10
In the background, a pyramid faintly appears.11
Well, we have the summit, what to do, that's how it is..12
so we quickly wave it goodbye and continue towards port Krnesu13
along the path you can't miss the vivid green color of moss14
there are also many anthills15
and those grasses in tussocks and hollows that invite you into their embrace --if they weren't wet16
when suddenly we spot a brown head amid the grass17
yes, caution is not superfluous..18
well, nothing dangerous, just a calf resting and chewing cud, while we disturb its right to peace19
it moves away and seeks a clover garden in the shelter of a stump20
and we even find one single blueberry21
several butterflies were sleeping on the grasses22
the path continues...23
heather along the path24
the host we meet warns us of a special Swiss pine tree on the other side of the meadow25
we go to see it up close, as it is considered special, Swiss pine...from the white pine species..26
and the hillock in front of us - Krnes27
On the top of Krnes full of blueberries, cranberries, moss... the path bends from softness.28
At the summit interesting volcanic rocks among all the greenery.29
The day is getting nicer and view of Golte.30
And view back to Smrekovec.31
And after some ascent the view to Komen opens up.32
Slope behind - Menina planina.33
and... finally at the top of Komna.34
a view opens to Uršlja gora35
from there up we came from the forest36
cross without Christ, so someone sketched him right on the wood37
view of the valley towards Ljubno on departure38

For the first time I might do this circular route:

start valley of Žep stream (near sharp bend at ca 700m asl) - east with quickest connection to hiking path from Ljubenska Rastka – along marked path to Komen – Hlipovec saddle – direct to Veliki Travnik – descent along marked path ''Žep stream valley - Veliki Travnik'' past hut on Travnik and Počka planina

I have info from maps and hribi.net descriptions. But it's winter and lately no hikes.

how much worst-trodden snow at most would I e.g. tomorrow encounter on mentioned connection between peaks and maybe elsewhere? If problems, is another more southern connection between V.Travnik and Komna better in winter? Anything else noteworthy – negative – on desired route?

Thanks for help nasmeh

when from CE towards Žalec I saw beautiful clear weather in Savinja valley, I changed plan and went to Komen on mentioned path. towards summit quite tough in collapsing snow. with snowshoes probably much easier. towards Hlipovec saddle really lots of snow and needed quite some care not to sink half way in snow somewhere. no properly trodden path anywhere. from Hlipovec to Komen not recommend, but my path to persistent and capable ones. due to snow conditions and as just below Komna summit weather turned viewless and no improvement, didn't go to Travnik. return along road, at end some improvisation and view of two nice waterfalls. but rewarded with lots of nice photos of this abundance of snow.
