Košuta Ridge

Print
peter214. 07. 2010 07:32:51
We traversed Košuta two days ago.
We agreed to go with two cars, left one under pl. Kofce, and with the other drove together under pl. Dolge Njive. There we started the path to Košutnikov Turn and onwards towards Veliki Vrh.
This way we had the sun in our backs all day, and also the peaks in the eastern part of the ridge are a bit more demanding than those in the west and it makes sense to traverse them first.
No problems on the path, just enough drinks recommended for the long path.
We skipped the last peak in the ridge Veliki Vrh. We'll visit it for sure in autumn. We finished the tour at Toplarju.
Beer at Kofcah, believe me, tastes great afterwards nasmeh

Z-part of Košuta: from Veliki vrh over Kofce-gora to Kladiva - conditions 13.11.2010

From the hut at Kofce, where there is no snow, along the usual path to Vel. vrh, the path has been trodden by quite a few hikers today. The snow is wet and soft, sinks to the base, on the top there is about 25 cm and today there is quite some southwest wind. We descend to the saddle, then along the ridge we tread the path to Kofce-gora, from there we continue to Kladiva, where tracks of the predecessor are visible in the snow, who ascended from Planina Pungrat or Šija. No special problems on the path, except needed caution due to slip risk in the wet. We do the descent from Kladiva more or less straight down towards the saddle above Šija, which in today's conditions was not particularly tricky, so crampons and ice axe were not used.
From Dom na Kofcah upwards, ...where there was no (more) snow today (yet).1
Path to Veliki vrh, with altitude snow increases, but it is wet and soft, sinks to the ground.2
At the top thin high cloudiness, view to Zelenica, Karavanke and Julijci with Triglav in background3
Along the ridge we track the path to Kofce - gora.4
At the top of Kofce-gora, view towards Kladivo5
Kladivo at the top, in the background ... view on KS Alpe and Storžič6
View from Kladivo to Veliki vrh, Begunjščica and Triglav in the background7

Shelter - scout hut on pl.Šija already closed, ... but to Dom na Kofcah less than 1/2 hour10
... under Kofce the first snowdrops already making buds11

alyas, weather was obviously tailor-made. Especially the 5th photo with Kladivo in background appeals to me, namely the snow creates a feeling of a more monumental mountain than it really is. Nice photo. But something is still not clear to me. What the heck is a direction sign doing on the top - (I assume) - of Veliki vrh on photo 3.?

We too were up there 13.11., in the morning I counted as many as 16 visitors, signpost is up there, sure useless, but so what, if they made it they had to put it somewhere.

On the flat top of Veliki vrh on Košuta, two direction signs or markers are attached to a fairly new and stable (road) pole: to Kofce (in the direction towards home) and to Hajnževo sedlo (in the direction towards Košutica) above Ljubelska Korošica.

On 8.10.2010 they opened the path Okoli Košuta - Alpine Convention Path and obviously the creators of this path also thought of this signpost (signposts are placed at important junctions but Veliki Vrh is not since only two paths lead there, northern from Hanževo sedlo and southern from Kofc) on which it is also marked who placed it (PD Tržič and PZS). On the PD Tržič website you can see the description.

Personally I prefer signposts from natural materials (wooden) like the one on planina Šija although they are officially not legal. The path from Šija to Kladivo is massively visited and well trodden for many years although officially pathless (not in the register of mountain paths and not marked).

I'm wondering, how much time is needed for the path from Kofce mountain along the ridge to Košutnikov turn or Tolsta Košuta.

With Romana we walked from home at Kofcah, to Veliki Vrh and further to Kosutnikov Turn 5.20h. On this path we had two longer chats

On 6.6 I started the tour behind the last tunnel before Ljubelj border tunnel, went past planina Korošica, via secured climbing path to Veliki Vrh and traversed the ridge to Tolsta Košuta. A bit before Košutnikov Turn a colleague joined me, so we belayed across Gamsovke. Those who solo such a rock quarry must be really 'brave'. Start at 5:20, finish at 18:30. No snow, some 10 meters on the climbing path to V. Vrh washed away and part of the cable under stones and soil, but not hard to get over. In the morning when it's wet, you need to be careful because it's quite slippery. The biggest problem was the sun - hands still completely sunburned today :-(

palček plezalček - congrats, as traversing the entire Košuta is no easy feat, and for the finale still the demanding pathless Turn - Tolsta Košuta.

Starting point Pod Krnico, past pl. Dolga Njiva and along the eastern path to Košutnikov Turn. From the top along the ridge over Tegoška Gora..., Kladivo...Veliki Vrh. Descent to the path that goes past the pastures back to Pod Krnico. From Kofc to Pod Krnico it's about 2.30 hours of walking there.

How long did the whole thing take? And what are the conditions like - as it seems, no snow anywhere anymore? How do you get to the starting point "Pod Krnico"? What's the road condition?

It took the whole day, no snow, back to start from Veliki Vrh - Pod Krnico just under three hours, road is drivable.

This is definitely one of the most beautiful tours around here. Good to know firsthand that there's no more snow. I'll repeat it soon and report.

Yesterday we started from Tržič via Kamnek, Kal pasture and Dom na Kofcah hut to Veliki vrh. Then we traversed the entire ridge to Košutnikov turn. We were grateful for the clouds and wind so it wasn't too hot for us nasmeh From the Turn we descended to Planina Spodnja Njiva and continued towards the hamlet of Medvodje and Jelendol. Just before Jelendol a friendly couple stopped us, gave us a ride to Tržič and saved us the way nasmeh Really nice tour nasmeh

@gorska planika, how much time did you need for the whole route? I'm wondering about this path, if starting from Matizovec via Kofce first to Veliki vrh, then I'm interested whether you go along the ridge over Kladivo, Škrbina and Tegoška gora directly to the Turn, or descend to Pungrat and continue below? I have the map in front of me, but it's not quite clear... How demanding is this path? Thanks in advance for info nasmeh

Hi! I recommend starting from Matizovec, as you'll save a lot of time that way nasmeh
The whole route goes only along the ridge. From Škrbina you go directly ahead towards Tegoška gora. No descending to Pungrat. From Tegoška gora you go past Užnik, Macesje and soon you're at Košutnikov turn. Then you descend to planina Dolga Njiva, where the markers will direct you towards pastures Pungrat, Šija, Kofce.
The path is very demanding physically, the ridge is exposed in places. Sufficient fluids are needed, especially in sunny weather.
If anything else interests you, just ask nasmeh Good luck and safe steps!

Yesterday we did the traverse from the starting point below Kofce. Weather conditions were just pleasant for walking, so we enjoyed it even though the views weren't the best nasmeh. 12h for the whole thing is probably right for a more casual (relaxed) average hike; if you put an extra log in the stove you arrive quite a bit earliermežikanje....

Today did the route on the western part of Košuta ridge. Start at parking below Matizovec, to Dom na Kofcah, then to Kofce gora (along the ridge), past Mali Kladivo to Veliki Kladivo, then descent to planina Šija and back to parking.

Ideal weather conditions, no wind, sun from Dom na Kofcah onwards. From the junction Veliki vrh-Kladivo (below the ridge behind Kofce gora) all the way to Veliki Kladivo had to break trail, so the route took a bit longer. Total 6h walking.

Short video clip, because on Košuta ridge, due to caution while breaking trail, not much time for camera.
