Košutnikov Turn

Today, on Friday I went to Košutnikov Turn via the eastern path. The path is snow-free. Above Dolga Njiva you have to look for the trail that leads through the scree towards the Turn. From the rock with the inscription Košutnikov Turn you need to keep somewhat to the right to find the path ahead. Then there are no more problems, except if fitness is lacking, namely the last part of the ascent to the summit really demands it. Let me say that I was alone on the summit with a wonderful view. Back I returned via the western path which seems more suitable for descent to me.

On Wednesday 12.9. I was also on Košutnikov Turn, namely in the opposite direction as described above. On the steep grasses of the eastern path during descent you need to be quite careful not to slip if it's wet. Also, above the Zg. Dolga Njiva pasture I noticed three adders sunning themselves on the path. Regards

Last year I almost stepped on one when I went up to Koš.Turn, I saw a few too, although they are quite rare in Slovenia.
Careful. Regards

On Sunday, 27.4., I set off with friends to Košutnikov Turn via the eastern variant of the southern Slovenian slope. Approximately at 1500 m altitude, when the path turns into the scree, in shady areas there are up to a meter-deep patches of wet southern snow that significantly hinder walking. In sunny areas up to 1700 m there is no more snow. Above this the snow is very heavy and wet. Walking on exposed sections is very dangerous without proper equipment. There is a risk of slipping due to thin crust of melting snow under which very slippery wet grass is already showing. Around 1900 meters we therefore preferred to descend and visit neighboring Plešivec, which also didn't spare trudging through deep southern snow. I advise against visiting Košutnikov Turn this way for at least the next two to three weeks.
Best regards.

Has anyone been recently to Košutnikov Turn from the northern, Austrian side? I'm interested in the snow conditions and if the safety devices survived the winter okay. A couple of years ago, end of June, it was all clear.

Ferratas to Košutnikov Turn and Cjajnik completely clear. Also the protections, as many as there are, are okay.

Edos, thanks for the reply.
Also at Koschutahaus hut they confirmed to me yesterday that below the wall there's just a bit of snow left, otherwise the path is clear and nicely passable.

On Saturday I was on Košutnikov Turn from the Austrian side via öTK path. The path to the wall entry is nothing special, only the ascent over the scree is strenuous. Snow is only left below the wall edge. For the climbing part (about 30 min) I strongly recommend helmet and self-belay set, as it's crumbly here and there. The path is well secured, wires nicely tensioned. Long legs come in very handy. From the ridge to the summit another 15 min over rocks and flowering grasses. No view due to fog, but greedy dippers occupied us. Descent on the eastern side is almost impossible due to missing protections, as those who turned back told us.
The path is interesting and beautiful and I recommend it to those without vertigo, as some parts are quite vertical. From hut to summit under 3 hours.
Toll fee for car 3 EUR, paid at the hut, although in Sele village no one checked.

On Sunday we set off from Sp. Dolga Njiva pasture towards Košutnikov Turn, namely via the eastern path. Due to fairly soaked terrain, great caution was needed when crossing steep slopes. It was especially needed during the ascent along the ridge to the summit, where it was very greasy and slippery. We returned from the summit back along the same ridge, then turned right across the slope towards the western path. On the way across the slope we met a friendly mountaineer who informed us that we could have reached this path also from the summit, but we ourselves did not dare to do it due to not knowing the path. We also had to be careful on the western path, so we descended without problems to the shepherd's hut. However, the nice trip was spoiled by a tragic event that happened that day. Brane and Nives

After last year's visit to the western half of Košuta, I immediately knew that the eastern one would follow. And indeed, on Wednesday with a friend we drove to Planina Pungrat, from there to Škrbina and along the ridge over five 2000ers to Košutnikov Turn. This was followed by a descent via the Western Path to Krnica and then through the forest and along the river of pastures already in the dark to the car.

Praise to the team that has freshly tuned up the path to Škrbina. On the ridge at Macesje there are some new fixed cables.

On Saturday, 21.8.2010 we plan a hike along Košuta. We would start on the Austrian side at Koschutahaus hut from there via ferrata to Turn and on to Kladivo, then probably descend to planšarija Pungrat where we would overnight, next day first visit Kofce and on to Veliki vrh. Descent via demanding path to Hajnževo sedlo and on to planšarija Korošica, where they have excellent sour milk. From there only unpleasant descent to near the monument at Ljubelj.
Everything depends on the weather.
Regards.

Today I extended the route to Košutnikov Turn quite a bit, specifically by first climbing over Mala Košuta to Tolsta Košuta (east side) and then slowly over various peaks to the Turn.

I must warn that part of this route is very climby and without any fixed cables. Besides everything, it's also unmarked and poorly trodden. Recommend only to "madmen". big grin

On Saturday, 21.8.10 we visited Košuta following the already described route plan. It was all very playful-varied, as the route was taken by nine hourly hikers so there was no lack of laughter and joy in these two days.
Notes: Via ferrata on Turn short and demanding especially the 'Bridge', Košuta ridge gorgeous, mountain pastures (Pungart, Šija, pasture at Kofce, Korošica) true gems of Slovenian mountains, path from Veliki vrh to Hajnžkovo sedlo quite crumbly. In the end, one wonders where Slovenian hikers are, as we mostly met foreigners.
And some pictures.

Congratulations Lothar, nice tour you did. With the description you reminded me too of this tour, which I did about ten years ago in somewhat foggy weather which was useful so I only sensed the big drops below me. Worse was that due to poor visibility I stuck too much to the ridge and therefore even rode it at some placessmile. The ridge, which is an easier walk for alpinists, demands quite some experience from hikers since it involves climbing up to grade II. Nice regards and good luck!

Bravo Lothar, I'm interested how long the tour from Mala Košuta to Ljubelj would take and where the best starting point would be.

Joža X; it depends on your (your) physical fitness. If you tackle such a tour, it's advisable to have at least two cars - one at the start, the other at the finish. I recently spent about 7h on this tour, starting from Matizovec. I avoided Veliki vrh, so I went straight to Kofce gora and then on via Mala Kladivo to Košutnikov Turn. From there you go to Košutnikova eastern saddle, where traces of a faint path appear. It leads towards Gamsovke (Freibachwand, 2065 m). Known for extreme crumbliness, but in reality it's not that bad. Not that crumbly. On both sides, north and south, they drop with vertical and broken walls. In the entire Košuta ridge they are the hardest to climb, requiring up to II difficulty, but only on one 10-meter traverse. East of them lie the Obliči (Doborwaspitzen – West, 2005 m; Middle, 2026 m and East, 2015 m), which drop south with steep grassy slopes, ragged gullies and numerous rocky teeth. You can get through them without problem, more on the south side, but without excessive exposure. Then you quickly find yourself in front of the western summit of Tolsta Košuta (watch for the natural window; there are three such on the entire Košuta ridge, through which you see nicely), then descend to Mala Košuta. The return to the start - i.e. Matizovec - is known: past Planina Dolga njiva, Tegoške planine, Pungrat, Šija, Kofce... it drags a bit due to fatigue and dehydration. Such a tour is best done in October.

If I understand correctly from Ljubelj to Košutnikov Turn marked and nothing special, further to Tolsta Košuta unmarked, without protections and hard to follow path. Is it possible to overnight at one of the pastures on the way back if time doesn't work out. Thanks.

Many years ago:
start at Planina Dolga njiva, then over Tolsta Košuta all the way to Veliki Vrh and descent via Planina Korošica to the monument of the camp below Ljubelj. On Tolsta Košuta some minor climbing, not too hard and short, then up and down the ridge. All together it took 11h to V. Vrh, plus additional descent.
Very nice, very long, very strenuous. smile
My buddy and I had transport organized, in the morning dropped us at Dolga njiva and picked up in the evening below Ljubelj.

I didn't write anywhere that the path is hard to follow. The passages are easy to find, even a faint path. Only 10 meters of fairly exposed traverse is grade II climbing. There is even a peg for abseil (if going from Tolsta Košuta to Turn). Otherwise, border stones help with orientation. Overnight: Dolga njiva; Pungrat; Kofce. Call them!

From clouds in the valley and fog at Dolga njiva, we climbed to the summit today.
The rocky jump below the summit on the west path was too hard for my wife, so she waited below.
They could install some cable there - for consideration PD Tržič

Yesterday I started at six in the morning from Kofce to Veliki Vrh, then along the ridge towards Košutnikov Turn. Excellent weather, on the way to Kladivo I met only one person, at the summit a team of Styrian foresters, to whom I thank for lunch smile From Kladivo onwards I was alone all day. At the summit around three (I went slowly, because I wasn't in a hurry). At four down to Planina Zg. Dolga Njiva, then across pastures below the ridge to Kofce, arrived at eight. One Radler and home.
