Velkavrh, you are obviously still a refined gentleman of the old school who still values good manners and culture. Your contributions and photos are always interesting and welcome. Good luck further in the mountains!

On Monday again to Križ this time from Vrata via Bivak 4, then on to Pogačnikov dom and Razor. I really like the view from Križ, it has a really good position, even though it's lower than nearby peaks.

Below Križka wall. Today I went from parking at Russian cross, past Koča v Krnici and further on the path. About 30 minutes from the hut at height approx 1300 m first snow patches started. Snow was as forecasted very hard, if terrain more exposed crampons would be necessary, but it went mostly on tips of ski boots.

In cirque below wall, above approx 1900 m still quite some snow and dry, here and there crusty. Climbed right to last wall, carried skis on backpack, took dogs just for walk, had snowshoes but walking with them didn't appeal at all.

Skiing wasn't greatest pleasure. In upper third (to cca 1800 m) intense alternation of crust areas, powder snow and frozen slush, which even around noon had no intention to soften a bit. No avalanche areas noticed, seems wind affected snow shape and structure this winter. Last two thirds to approx 1300 m frozen snow sprinkled with cm or two fresh, which barely compensated snow melt and skiing thus not too demanding. Of course such thin cover can hide many rocks. Last 200 or 300 height meters was one fight how to twist as low as possible through snow tongues among rocks and bushes. Weather divine, also wind (except some small morning gust) didn't blow at all in this hidden corner.
Morning view: first snow patches are half an hour above Dom v Krnici, at about 1300m.1
Above 2000 meters it is real winter.2
I climbed right up to the last wall.3
It was cold, when I took off my gloves, my fingers cramped.4
The scenery is so-so.5
Numerous rocks are peeking out, but this winter's modestly fallen snow is still holding on.6
Almost no traces of old avalanches, this winter the snow was mostly shaped by wind.7
In the lower part there is one or two centimeters of fresh snow.8
The snow needs to be enjoyed to the last centimeter.9
The weather was divine, the views too.10

On Saturday did short trip from Aljažev dom in Vratih past bivak 4 to Križ... to bivak three snow patches (one a bit longer can't avoid it and two short, nothing difficult)... from bivak (circa 2000 m) to Križ still winter conditions... snow was on surface soft but still quite hard so managed path only with gaiters... views from top fantastic...

For Bivak 4 don't know, for over Kriška stena though crampons are needed for snowfield at entrance to secured section.

Yesterday descended from Križ past Bivak 4 to Aljažev dom without crampons and without ice axe, only with trekking poles. There are 3 shorter snow patches, all passable carefully or can bypass. First larger at junction to Škrlatica. Passable no problem. Second after 15 min or so. That's steeper but short. Third on path from Bivak 4 to Aljažev dom. That's steepest, can bypass both sides.

Yesterday nine of us set off from Krnica via Kriška stena. The entire path from the hut to the top of Križ and Gubno is completely dry, except for snowfields on the scree below the entry to the stena. In the upper part the screes are quite steep, so a slip is not quite impossible. Admittedly not exactly deadly dangerous, but the slip would end fifty meters lower in rocks. We didn't have crampons, but I had an ice axe, with which I dug steps across a thirty meter wide snow tongue in fifteen minutes.
Through the stena is nicely routed, partly secured path, which is also nicely marked from bottom to top. But I would advise the markers to mark it next time also from top to bottom, since in that direction the marks are poorly visible in many places.
Until eleven a.m. clear weather, upon exiting the stena it started clouding from Razor. First we climbed pathless Gubno and then Križ. On descent through the stena light drizzle caught us in the lower part. It then accompanied us to the hut, where it stopped.

Krnica-Kriška stena-Križ-Kriški rob. Ice axe still needed, crossed two short snowfields in the wall, made steps for easier return. Some snowflakes at top of Kriška stena. Went up to Križ and later also descent and ascent to Kriški rob. After break back the way we came. Half of Kriška stena on ledges has lots of gravel. Careful. Also watch the transition from snowfield to wall. More rain from Krnica hut to Vršiška road.

Is the path from Aljažev dom in Vrata via Sovatna to Križ normally passable or winter gear still needed? Thanks nasmeh

Was there Thursday, over Sovatna couple snowfields you can nicely cross or bypass, past Pogačnikov dom to Križ, no issues
