Ljubelj Pass (hut)

Print
Kriška7. 12. 2008 18:04:26
Afternoon walk from the former border crossing to the hut at Ljubelj Pass was rich with views on a beautiful, clear day, while in the valley below us there was a sea of fog. The sledding track is nice, not yet too "plowed", only at one spot it was narrowed to about 1 m width today due to a small snow avalanche that fell onto the road (i.e., sledding track). Traces of several small avalanches are visible, but they have already been removed from the path.

Today short trip to Ljubelj pass. In the lower part the path is minimally covered with southern snow, sometimes not at all, in the upper half there's a bit more snow and it's drier, but still too little for sledding - although some have already tried and sledded from the hut to halfway down. For proper sledding need to wait a bit more.

Some photos from today's trip to the Ljubelj hut. The sledding track is nicely groomed, snow slightly wet.

Sunday was nice despite being caught in clouds. The road is nicely ratracked and super for sledding. Along the path in the afternoon snow occasionally slid, but no danger.

Sledding track on Slovenian side is groomed but very icy. On Austrian side on the road frozen old snow with 5 cm powder on top - suitable for ski touring (not suitable for sledding).
Today in cloudy weather Rok and Tadej ascended to Ljubelj Hut.

That's how the current conditions looked or wandering along the sledding track to the Ljubelj hut, where old and young tirelessly enjoyed sledding joys; initially sky covered with misty veil cleared blue after strengthening tea in the hut and cheerful hustle beganvelik nasmehvelik nasmeh, descent to the valley; young faster, older and parents with small kids with "foot brakes"; track really great for sledders, just in one short part be careful due to snow-ice bumps; also those (rare) hikers who came both ways on foot could enjoy; not only reliving childhood but also in warm sun rays and beautiful views of surrounding mountain beauties; really nice winter trip. On Austrian side as Rok and Tadej wrote. LP

Pohodnica53,
you made good use of the day, even though you didn't go sleddingnasmeh For me the Ljubelj hut is a very dear trip destination. I always enjoy when I head up there, whatever the weather.
Nice regards and many more nice trips ahead.

LP Tisa! Yes, really well spent "joker" of nice weather and I warmly recommend it to anyone who hasn't been therenasmeh; really worth seeing, especially now in winter; I'm a bit "jealous" if you live nearby so you can pop up more often; wish you nice paths too, especially safe ones in current times; lpmežikanje

Yesterday afternoon we headed with Katurovcem to Ljubelj and in the evening also to Ratitovec.
When returning from Ljubelj hut we met a rescuer on foot and soon after a policeman with an off-road vehicle and siren; it was immediately clear to us something had happened. We arrived at the plateau before the tunnel and a rescue vehicle was already waiting and other rescuers preparing (GRS Tržič) – full praise for such quick action and also hats off to them that a female sledder had slipped off the track into the gully.
After the unpleasant event we drove to Prtovč and headed for a night hike to Ratitovec.

The sun obviously doesn't want to come down to our valley or demands its "toll" for hugs of sun rays, and since my energy gauge was similar to the outside temperature in the morning, it was already well past noon when I finally set off from home. No time for a bigger adventure, so I often head to the Ljubelj Hut. It's just right for recharging energy, and during the week when the hut is closed, it's lonely enough.
Conditions: the path is still snowy, but there's little snow, yet you can see that sledders are still using it diligently. For walking, it's excellent. Especially on such sunny days, with all the views, you don't even notice you're going uphill.

By the top, I had gathered so much energy that the tracks of predecessors lured me towards Polna peč. The path along the border ridge is fine, not icy, just occasionally a step slips due to leaves under the snow. It's trodden to below the summit of Polna peč, where apparently all predecessors turned back. Under the fine sugary powder is a mass of icy snow, unfortunately the sun doesn't reach there. I unfortunately didn't have more time to put on crampons and find safe steps, as the sun had already hidden behind the peaks. So I turned back too and went back to the Ljubelj hut to the high-altitude bench (now I know why they have it) and preferred to enjoy the silence, solitude for a few more minutes... then back to the valley.

Today a shorter walk from Ljubelj, past the hut, to Polna peč. On the road to the hut, several dry sections, so no longer suitable for sledding, but in the morning hours, on some parts quite icy. When crossing the steep slope under Polna peč, small crampons are also useful. In short, another great day, so no need, as "potepinka" already wrote, to detour into the "high-altitude bench". nasmeh

Winter with the last snowfall allowed sledders a bit more joy. Some spots where sand peeked out can be bypassed. But caution on icy spots is not superfluous. As for walkers, nothing special, I met quite a few who put on small crampons for safer steps, but the path can be walked without them too.
As always, even without sun, a suitable tour to walk off the boots, "cleanse the soul" and enjoy among the spruces.nasmeh

Potepinka,
you obviously caught us with the family in the lens when we were enjoying it the most. But we weren't too loud, as it was sliding like hell.
Thanks for the picture.
