Thanks for posting the convincing measurement. Did you tie a stone to the meter?

Garmont, thanks for the info. I hope to get to Škaf on Friday if the weather permits.

@Tere, no problem. Tone, at the end of the meter I put a carabiner so that it was weighted and fell straight to the bottom.

We decided to visit Matkov Shaft quite spontaneously, although for years it had been said that one day we have to go there. We read the tips on recommended equipment, saw a couple of pictures on these pages inviting to view it, and there was no more delaying. The steepness to the shaft is really greater than I actually imagined. That something can also fly down was visible along the ascent path, especially when stepping on snow, so we behaved very cautiously, at the shaft we didn't want to be too brave either, let alone so curious as to measure it or even climb inside, since there was no one to pull us out . On the whole path we actually met only a couple of hikers, two already returning, one coming as we returned, two we saw more from afar as we descended among boulders. We had to admit it's really an attraction to see, something special, incomparable to views from any peak, simply a special experience admiring this wonder of nature. If I'd known before, the visit would probably have been much earlier, but then something else would have been missed. Highly recommend, especially to those doing this view for the first time, like us yesterday !

In picture No. 23 there's my forgotten yellow-green shirt on the ground. If someone picks it up and brings it to the valley, I'd be grateful.

I just went to check on Facebook if Skaf posts are already in public groups. They are - maybe mention there and someone brings it to you. Hope peace stays in these parts.

Roughly, this is how the snowfield steepness looks, ca 15m below snowfield top. It continues somewhat steeper. Those not skilled in such walking are recommended an ice axe or belay from above.

Are crampons needed going up the snow? Probably, where is this waterfall? Thanks for the answer

Crampons are not needed at the moment. More trouble with rocks to the remains of the škaf (if not melted). Even at the beginning of June, when visits to the škaf start, they aren't really necessary gear; better a helmet for the last part. When you reach Matkov kot and the road exits the forest, there is gravel parking for a few cars. From there, signs lead through the kot to the škaf and on to Mrzla gora. lp If you're only interested in the škaf, save the trip for June 2023.
