Probably there was too little snow for "skis".

@otiv I really intended to go higher, as far as conditions would allow, but I forgot almost half my gear at home. For skiing though, too little snow in the gullies, and too many icy and bare jumps. At least up to where I got and what I saw further up.

Edina, the approach to Mrzla gora from Matkov kot is not that scary after all. Krnička gora is easiest accessible from the Austrian side (Belska Kočna) past a great window resembling ski goggles from afar (I), Matkova kopa however is especially in the upper part a prime orientation challenge (I). But Matkov kot really is a remote paradise.

Yes, it's true, Matkov valley is a real paradise on earth. Its remoteness from usual hiking bustle offers silence, peace, you might not meet a living soul there, just you and the mountain nature. But it's visited en masse when the famous Matkov pothole is in its "full glory", that's in spring and early summer. Worth seeing. Last year, end of August, I chose Matkov valley as starting point for a tour to Mrzla gora. I join "Volk"'s opinion, the tour is indeed suitable for somewhat more experienced hikers. Nice route description in A. Stritar's guide "Kamniško-Savinjske Alpe". I started from Matkov kot past Matkov pothole, which of course was no longer there at that time of year, further to the Latvica cirque, at the top of the cirque right on slightly exposed terrain to the summit of Mrzla gora. From the summit I continued to Mrzla dol (on this part of the path we have to be most careful - crumbly rocks, slightly worse markers, quite demanding!), continue over Savinjsko and Jezersko sedlo to Koča na Ledinah, then descent to Ravenska Kočna valley and finish at Planšarsko jezero, where I treat myself to a mug of cold golden liquid with a centimeter thick foam on top. Ordered transport takes me pleasantly tired back to Matkov kot over Pavličevo sedlo, where I parked the car early in the morning. Surely this part of the all-day tour is the most unpleasant. The described tour is quite ambitious, but worth the effort. Scenic views all the way, silence and peace, in short everything we seek in the mountains.

Next weekend I'd like to see Matkov pothole. I'm interested how many hours walk from the parking lot to Matkov pothole and if crampons are needed? Safe steps to all hikers and best regards.

I doubt you'll be able to see the pothole next weekend yet... Probably it hasn't even started forming - I visited it last year on May 1st, and it was "only" 3-4 meters deep.

Oh, I'm wondering if the pothole has already broken through. Which farm do you recommend for a stop and lunch? Nice tours to you all.

Today, 22.5.2011, I was on Mrzla gora past Matkov's pothole. There is already very little snow so the pothole is only about 10 m deep. Even higher towards Mrzla gora there is almost no snow (crampons unnecessary, ice axe recommended, helmet mandatory - rocks falling) regards

Aonuk1, thanks for the picture and the pothole depth info, as this year I'll save the trip there. For about 10 years I've gone in May or early June to measure its depth. It varies incredibly every year. In 2006 e.g. I measured 30.5m, which is the deepest since I started measuring, the next year it was just an ordinary basin, with barely 8 meters. Of course it's hard to catch the optimal date when the bottom shows. Just one week's delay and the pothole can be a meter or more shallower. Ps; try rotating the second picture 90 degrees (otherwise the snow will melt even sooner).

Thanks for the info. Obviously more orchids than pothole.

Saturday afternoon I took the chance to visit Matkov Kot. After two months I just had to go back to this magical valley. No specific goal, so I left the parking lot just before 11. Along the trail I saw climbers going up various waterfalls and gullies. Headed to Matkov Škaf, though not the season. Soon found tracks of two or three ahead, easing the way. Before the škaf put on crampons and scratched up to Latvica. Tracks vanished before last steep jump under Latvica, had to posthole hard at times. Over the jump, sinking badly to Latvica, so tried up gully to traverse to Krnička gora. End of traverse more postholing in wet snow (sun-exposed side). Didn't want dark return, turned back. Next time! 20 min more to top on dry ground, but 1 hour min in these conditions. Visit to Matkov Kot is always a day for the soul! Regards to all snowy mountain lovers!

Did you plan to traverse to Krnička? Started late.. Otherwise, quite a tour you picked... Regards

Good to hear someone followed my tracks from Friday 27th. Was alone, but obviously plowed so deep that @dprapr thought more people. Goal Latvica, but didn't reach, powder sinking to waist in places, lost time orienting, first time in Matkov Kot but not last , beautiful.
