Menina planina

Today first time to Menina past Strmčnik, starting point Gornji Grad.

Path is a bit longer than the other two marked ones leading to Menina from Gornji Grad. Large part is more sparsely marked and steep. Logging tracks cross it, sections overgrown, probably less visited, so with some orientation loops if you do it first time.

Already driving to Gornji Grad we notice wind is quite persistent today, and accompanies us whole hike. Higher we go, more it shows its power, so conditions quite demanding. Large part of path we waded through 20 to 40cm (in drifts) deep, powdery snow cover, which became crusted with height, harder to pass. Ascent ends at Hut on Menina, which is open weekends, if I understood right, Sundays till 15:00.

Back to valley via Borovnica.
Lower thaw melts snow, and when I rush on "shortcut" wet branch slips me, I fall like log, one trekking pole catapulted somewhere unknown! Before that Janez lands on butt velik nasmeh

Safe!

This year we roamed Menina three times, first real winter tour in January from Gornji Grad, then in May pure enjoyment from Črnivec pass, now decision to also from Lipa pass, so we will cover whole Menina lengthwise, from one pass to the other.
So yesterday started a bit after 9 from Lipa pass. I knew we were late again, well no big heatnasmeh, so chasing last light moments on path again. Yes, headlamps ready.
After exiting forest, then towards Biba, decide also for Goli vrh. Snow on path quite a lot at places, drifts, so really needed gaiters.
Great views, warm in sun, but in shade felt quite cold, occasional wind a bit increased chill feeling.
Grateful to two hikers who plowed track from top of Goli vrh towards hut on Menina, as we didn't know where we were going until reached marked path from Biba.
Hut open Sundays only till 15:00. In hut didn't have much time to enjoy, as needed to return to start.
Return path quite demanding, on forest logging track stones, leaves, snow, steep, already poor visibility. Yes, really need to leave home earlier.
Arrived to car bit before 17:00.
Realized some drove higher, probably to other start.
Path I want to do again, but in spring time, when Biba is all in calves.
LP!

If you go from Lipa to Menina again sometime, then go to Slopov (photo 2) via left variant past Jeseničnik, path boasts great atmosphere! nasmeh

On Wednesday after shift up one of the less crowded variants. From Okrog. Past Bibe up, down via Vivodnik. Otherwise marked trail...which hides some orientation "surprises" mežikanje If you're used to pathless terrain nothing special. For those sticking strictly to marked trails, it can be a bit "lively".

Last Thursday my brother and I went to Menina Pasture, for a change from the south side. To the starting point in Okrog near Motnik we were accompanied by such dense fog that I "barely drove". Parking can also be puzzling, but friendly villagers advised us where we could leave the car. After cca. 400 meters we reached a fork, headed towards Osek and continued following the marked path. It directed us north past Vrhlaz. I emphasize this because everything is well marked on the terrain, but not on the 2023 PZS map. Snow surprised us quite quickly, but it doesn't require special gear, velik nasmeh . From Vivodnik or the Hut on Menina Pasture we popped to Jespa, but didn't risk the descent. We descended past Biba Pasture, partly on marked path, partly on STKP route. Four hours walking, 15 km, 800 elevation meters and no living soul anywhere, just peace and quiet.

Today with the bike from the village around to Bibe planina. Attaching numerous photos, in the sense if anyone is interested how far one can get by car from the Tuhinj direction. From Bibe onwards even more snowdrifts, while the first one is already right out of the forest. nasmeh
