And maybe someone knows more about the Premužić trail. Where is the starting point, when is the best time to visit, huts (overnights), promotional material, because there's not much on the net... I'm especially interested in your experiences. Thanks

Hi, I've hiked the Premužić trail 2x. Once it was the starting point of a 4-day traverse of North Velebit: Vratnik above Senj, the second time Oltari. The Premužić trail starts at Zavižan (meteorological station - hut - open all year) and ends at Baške Oštarije. In between you go through the strict nature reserve Hajdučki and Rožanski kukovi. The path has no big ascents and descents but has exceptional views and crazy scenery. In between there are (un)stocked huts - you have to call ahead for them to open (Alan, Ravni Dabar), food you mostly carry yourself and water for one day. Now - September is still a good time, because it's not hot, but the day is short (stage is also 10 hours). I always go to Velebit in May, it's uniquely beautiful, and now it would go too if the weather is OK. The best guide you get from the Croatian Mountaineering Association (Alan Čaplar - guide to Croatian mountains, Velebit mountaineering path), maps you order online from SMAND, it's a company that prints them and sends them to you. If you want to know more, just ask. Velebit is one of the most beautiful massifs for me... lp

My friend and I accidentally discovered the Premužić trail on a trip following this description: http://www.hribi.net/izlet/parkirisce_pri_botanicnem_vrtu_rossijevo_zavetisce_premuziceva_staza/30/706/1261 Just this week on the way to the sea we also hiked part from mountain hut Alan to Rossijevo zavetišče (3 hours one way). Now looking for info on continuation from Alan to Baške Oštarije, which is 12 hours walk and this forum topic came just right. Walking on Premužić path is pure pleasure, the path itself is fascinating construction work, Velebit insanely beautiful. Best, Ljubica

Between Alan and Baške Oštarije there's also Ravni Dabar - idyllic karst polje with mountain hut, whose keeper is Mile Prpić (tel. 053633016, 0981710933). And best to take two days for this part, so you can go to one of Dabarski kukovi or Kizo... Environment unique, true but from Ravni Dabar to Baške Oštarije in 2 hours. But path from Alan to Ravni Dabar more demanding on North and Central Velebit (quite rocky - and wardrobe for 4 days on back made it a bit harder). So consider it yourself. If need more info I have guidebook..best

I wandered between Baške Oštarije and Paklenica. Trail is a bit abandoned at start but well marked, views phenomenal. I'll upload some pics, if someone interested I can make path description too. Sorry, some pics are duplicates. Can't delete

Dolinka thanks for concrete and valuable info. We two hiked trail section from Zavižan to Alan in two day trips, based on current terrain knowledge and your info I assume whole path doable like this: first day from Zavižan to Alan hut (on way ascent to Gromovača and some peak along path), where overnight possible (check operation on hut website). Second day Alan to Ravni Dabar (quite long stage so better e.g. June when the day is long). Third day from Ravni Dabar to Baške Oštarije and on way some detour to viewpoint... of course need arranged transport back to start. Some pics from this year's trip on north part of Premužić trail here http://www.mojalbum.com/lzemljak/np-severni-velebit-12-6-2011 Best, and sending ZS too.

I always left car in Senj. From Baške Oštarije to Karlobag afternoon bus runs (check timetable Gospić-Karlobag) and then catch the one to Senj. Sadly they closed Velebno hotel at B.Ošt. this year, there they had Velebitsko (beer), limited series private brewery (I know I shouldn't advertise booze but it's really good). Regarding South Velebit it's a bit different. There no stocked huts at all, only shelters, so this part somewhat harder because of that. But also extremely beautiful. Everything carry yourself, and water in autumn can be issue, because water from cisterns. Most beautiful part around Stap and Stapina (Kamena galerija). Here too I hiked from Baške Oštarije to Sveto brdo (via Vaganski vrh) and to Mala and Velika Paklenica (each time a bit different). You have unique pics, and anyway Velebit paradise for photography (even for me who not great). But in last 2 years only women's team and must say I enjoyed endlessly on Velebit. Croats have here some deepest caves (Lukina jama, Velebita...), which are my wish, someday. Ah, wasn't at Crnopac, which is kind of Velebit end. But unique to see Tulove grede (path to top demined, but not left nor right if you want to live a bit more. best

On the south Velebit the first water south of Baške Oštarije is at Šugarski dulibi (not exactly alpine spring ), next at planina Stap (cistern). At these two places you can also overnight (at Šugarski d. container, at Stap old shepherd hut (recommend)). Also here there are some warnings in between, that due to mines you must not stray from the road (at Panos).

Yes, the next is at Veliki Rujno, then I went to Buljmo and Struge (shelter) - (also water at Madrasovac), then to Vaganski vrh and Sveto brdo and to Ivine vodice shelter (water) and then through Mala Paklenica (hard passable while there is water). Stap is really fairy-tale (Čučavac, chapel sv.Antuna, Stapina, Kamena galerija), I highly recommend it too. Don't know the condition of the cisterns in autumn time. Some paths to Lika are still mined and if you don't know them well they are not recommended.

Well, now we have information and ideas for some next vacations. Prepolc80, I'm sure many of us would be happy with your description of the done path. Let me mention here (though it doesn't write about Premužić trail) also the guidebook "Nacionalni park Paklenica", which was attached to PV no. 6/2011 and describes some interesting paths on South Velebit.

Thanks, thanks to everyone especially "dolinka", now I must first study all the information, check the maps, and then I'll be ready to ask something. Only this I would still ask. This weekend I was at Vratnik and stopped at the crumbling hotel and on the embankment saw the sign "Oltari 4h". A bit back there was an info board for the bike trail in the regional park S. Velebit, I think it's circular. Is this marked path somehow part of and connected to the Premužić trail. thanks

Great information. Just in June I'm heading to this trail. But I have a question for "dolinki" because I also thought of leaving the car in Senj. I'm interested how you got to the start of the trail from Senj, is there a taxi standing in town? Do you need to order it? Thanks

alesu43: from Vratnik you can hike to Oltari and further to Zavižan, where Premužić trail starts. Vratnik is already on (northern) Velebit. Princ: from Senj you can also hike to mountain hut Sijaset (and further towards Oltari). Between Alan and Baške Oštarije there is a new shelter in Skorpovac. Premužić between Ravni Dabro and Baške oštarije is quite uninteresting and short. But the tour over Butinovača and Kuke is exceptionally beautiful.
