Big thanks to everyone for the info! As soon as there's a nice sunny weekend, I'll go again to this part of Slovenia.

Yesterday, 15.2. on Prestreljenik. The snow was sinking just right, but quite wet. Still, conditions were okay. Somewhere in the middle it's quite steep, so don't take this ascent lightly, even though it's only 45 min walk from the saddle, and the exposure isn't breathtaking. There were four of us on the top today.

Does anyone maybe know what the conditions are like on Prestreljenik? Circular path past the window and down via ferrata? Is it dry already?

Today with a colleague to Prestreljenik, then via ferrata to the window and descent to D station. On the ferrata there's one snow patch, one right below the window, but they don't pose problems as the rope helps when crossing both. The plan was also ascent to the hut or bivouac a, but we abandoned it due to fog and clouds. Next time...nasmehnasmeh

Today by cable car to Kanin. First ride at eight in the morning. From employees I learn that they pick up hikers already at seven. At the cable car entrance you need to be fifteen minutes to seven. They don't advertise this anywhere, tell only those who inquire by phone. So, before the next trip to these mountains, you need to ask. Early bird catches the worm.

The weather forecast held zero, so we started a bit later on the access path to C station. The blabber about large amount of snow on Kanin turned out pure misleading - on that side closed slope, that's why visible on pictures. The ascent to the top itself still requires proper equipment, as the direct flank from Sedla up is concretely steep. Descended via Prevala to Krnica, where valley bottom still snowy; partly can approach on snow almost to ruins. Gravel road from Bec up past B station and practically to Krnica meadow this year commendably arrangednasmeh.

Yesterday 27.8.2020. From B station past the pasture in Krnica along the marked or signposted path to Prevala. There it was quite fine, cooled down. Wind was blowing. Had to get dressed. We continued all on the path to Prestreljenik. I think we were the only walkers on that path. Two cyclists, foreigners though, were descending with bikes on the mountain path to the valley. Weather held pretty good. Towards central Julijci not much to see. They were in clouds. Not many visits to the summit either. Mostly foreigners. We met a path marker who was painting the marks. And chatted with him. Saw some hikers who went from Prevala probably to Rombon, or to Črnelske Špice. Lots of flowers to see on the slopes. We descended the ascent path. From Krnica pasture on descent we missed the path lower and descended on another one, which goes a bit lower and I think at least it was longer. We arrived at station B completely elsewhere. Road is fine. Wide. Now they drive tourists with jeeps up, because higher up they have zip line. On descent could hear screaming and yelling of those who descended down.

On this trip to Prestreljenik from Krnica we met path marker Igor and talked for quite a while. He told about the bivouac that is on Kanin. Now it's unusable because the tempered glass broke and it needs replacing. Which is not easy. Cost-wise and helicopter transport to the valley. He said this bivouac wasn't meant for Kanin but for Črnelski Špice. Then they decided for Kanin. If the bivouac is for sheltering when bad weather surprises you or something else, it shouldn't be closed.

30.10.2021/Prestreljenik is still the only one among all - First Sernio was planned, but because of a flat tire and the tire shop sleeping we stayed on home turf. We didn't regret even a second, we're lucky we're close to PARADISE, and the fairy tale began.

From Bovec side over Krnica to Prestreljenik then also to Grdi and Ovčji vršič. Snow barely any left in hollows, so water needs to be carried with you. Path over Krnica is so-so, due to bike descents on scree part quite slippery. Path to Prestreljenik well marked. Path to Grdi vršič from "JV" side to Ovčji easier. On descent lower rain got me and goats followed me. Road OK. To Krnica, but up drive offroaders for zipline descent, if possible park lower and not quite to the end.

We headed to Prestreljenik from the Italian side. We parked at the large parking lot at the lower cable car station at Sella Nevea pass and set off towards Prevala saddle along the beautiful mulatjera marked 636. Besides Prestreljenik, the goal was also Kanin, descent via Julija ferrata and circular return to the starting point.

The view through the Prestreljenik window revealed to us the reality of the northern side of the range. The ledges are covered with patches of compacted snow on which the boot leaves no imprint. The descent via ferrata no longer appealed to us, so we skipped Kanin too. As an alternative goal, we chose the isolated Petra Skalar hut. We were interested in what condition it's in, access to it I had long forgotten anyway nasmeh.

The path to the hut is not easy neither from the left nor from the right side. It runs through the Kanin foothills full of karst features. The passages are well marked and it's wise to stick to them. This is especially recommended when dense fog engulfs the area. Dom Petra Skalarja is still in solid condition despite years of disuse. The roof was recently renovated, the rest is more or less left to the tooth of time. The hut is now used by cavers and apparently you can even sleep in it in season. The nearby bivouac is unusable and will probably remain so.

From the hut we returned along the well-marked path by the supply cable car. The protections are in good condition and soon we were at the ski area, shortly after at Prevala saddle. Descent to the starting point was along the morning path. The day is always shorter and the parking lot was already in deep shade despite a decent hour. More in the photo story ...

Nearby is the first signpost for the Prevala saddle2
It ascends along the military mule track and remains from those times are visible everywhere3
The mule track is exceptionally well preserved and walking on it is a pleasure4
Higher up there is also a permanent water source, which is a real rarity in this karst world5

Continuation via ferrata. It runs one level higher than the normal route.24
Right at the start there are some exposed passages25
Follow wide ledges that are fully secured26
The curious can also take a quick look into the cave world on the way.27
The via ferrata strongly reminds us visually of the Dolomite ledges.28
Here the via ferrata ascends. Up there we will have to go …29
Excellent protections ensure an easy transition to higher levels.30
Prestreljenik Window. It is definitely worth seeing it up close.31
The view through the window acquaints us with the reality of the northern slopes.32
For the Kanin direction we continue right from the window. A steep descent secured by steel cables follows.33
Our substitute goal, the still quite distant Petra Skalar hut.34
Soon we join the normal route to Kanin and continue on it.35
View back to the Prestreljenik Window.36
After a good kilometer at the trilingual signs we turn left.37
Passages run through the typical environment of Kanin screes. Following the markers is obligatory.38
View of Kanin. From the southern side it is dome-shaped, on the northern side compact snow lies on the ledges.39
View of Prestreljenik.40
The hut is in a remote place and no path to it is really for *tourists*.41
The nearby bivouac is of the *assemble yourself* type. Nothing of special interest is to be seen :)42
Petra Skalar Hut. The roof was recently renovated.43
Everything is tightly locked up, but the hut is made available to cavers.44
The toilets are quite far away, even on Kanin one has to go :)45
After a short stop we continue towards the ski slope.46
The transport cableway to the hut is renovated and operational.47
There are also many fixed protections here because the path runs through distinctly karst terrain.48
The markers are renewed, which is more than welcome in fog.49
Prestreljenik Window once again, this time from another viewpoint.50

The saddle is behind us and we continue descending to the trailhead.52

Upper station. Right beside it are many preserved objects from the First War.54
We are back on path 636, this time in the opposite direction.55
Nature is preparing for hibernation. At this elevation there is no greenery left anywhere.56
Seen many times already. Various plastic sign variants do not work at all.57
Late autumn. Larches are rapidly changing colors and will soon shed their decoration.58
Distinct karst gullies. Beautiful to behold but difficult to traverse.59
We are already in the final section of the path. One of the larger hotels is being fully renovated.60
Towards the trailhead. The sun has a low horizon at this time of year and the parking lot is already in shade.61
GPS track of the hiked path. It shows 17 km and 1700 m elevation gain.62

Holiday day provided a really nice tour, although at the beginning it almost seemed we could stay in the valley too. At station B they directed us back where we came from, with option even for ticket refund. But whatever it was, it got sorted quickly and we boarded the cabins againnasmeh.

First we climbed to Prestreljenik, which was my first visit to this peak. But it's worth stepping onto it, although it didn't attract me for a long time, actually until Sunday. But the summit was ours alone for quite a while, as most rushed to the Window. Really wonderful weather and views, sights reached all the way to High Turs. Then visit to the Window via ferrata, which offers a nice walk under the Prestreljenik summit. Surprised by a real crowd of tourists with completely unsuitable footwear, with some kids we thought they actually don't know how to walk in the mountains yet. But they are on vacation after all!

Descent through Krnica valley, which really surprised us in its beauty. Someone at Prevala warned us it's long, but didn't say it's so beautiful. We looked back a lot and admired Lopa, Jelenk, Vratni vrh, on the other side Stador, and the beautiful layout of Krnica alpine pasture where we spotted some goats. On the whole path we met practically no one, enjoyed also the soft beautiful path from the pasture down. To station B we arrived a bit lower, so we didn't walk on any rotten boards and steep terrain. Really great trip overall!
