Rečiška Circular Mountain Trail

Print
bagi22. 03. 2019 11:36:04
Rečiška has crept so much under our skin that we enjoy it every year anew nasmeh. There's everything from steep to gentle hills, beautiful views, roads to stretch legs and stops to bind the soul. Everything is just right arranged.

Distances and ascents still merciless as ever, Triglav can only bow to Rečiška. But fear of the whole trail is more in the head than in the legs. This year four of us, two first-timers with great respect. We all completed it without major issues. Legs maybe hurt a bit, satisfaction permanent nasmeh.

Morning warm-up on the slopes from Laško towards Kuretno1
Farmstead along the path that provided shelter to previous generations2
Snowdrops are currently everywhere3
Part of the thematic path of the three churches4
Another of the old, abandoned farmsteads5
View towards some of our goals6
Today's team7
At the last houses we turn towards Govško brdo8
On the first summit. Nine more followed.9
In this hill area, there was quite a bit of mining in the past, probably coal10
On one of the following summits. PD Laško has everything nicely marked, maintained and arranged11
The beech forest still doesn't have its spring attire12
View from Kal towards Rečica13
Giant miners' mountain hut, probably built from miners' money14
Friendly caretaker with excellent offer and low prices15
The easiest reachable Kalški hrib right by the path. Five minutes, no more16
Mrzlica. The mountain hut below it was open17
Farm at Špajzer. We continue on the lower gravel road18
Newly arranged chapel at the junction19
Bivouac on Gozdnik20
Čemaž is just a little short of delightful scents.21
At the end of the descent from Gozdnik.22
Šmohor23
Mountain hut on Šmohor, this time without a large number of visitors.24
Detour to nearby Tolsto.25
The last summit on the Rečiška trail.26
Malič and the transmitters that mar it.27
Return to Laško.28

We hiked the trail last Saturday. Worth praise. Especially first part over Govško Brdo, Baba and Ostrego vrh fantastic, Gozdnik cherry on top. Unfortunately trail very poorly marked, many signs destroyed... Our GPS at tour end at ŽP in Laško stopped at 38km and 2.300m total ascent?!

Spring hike in the middle of winter. The trail is completely dry, Govško Brdo has been newly arranged since last year. All three huts were open for the weekend, but surprisingly no visitors anywhere. Obviously the wind blew them away. It was shifting us too on Kal and the slopes of Gozdnik velik nasmeh.

Still the only sign for the Rečiška trail at the railway station in Laško1
View back towards the starting point2
We go in the direction of Kuretna3
Mighty homestead, a new one has grown beside it4
St. Catherine5
Left in the direction of Govce6
Here the sign for Govško brdo appears for the first time. We turn right7
Just behind the branch-off to Govško brdo is the entrance to the Laško mine8
They mined brown coal, as everywhere around here9
Mine telephone, nothing like today's mobile phones10
After viewing the mine's exterior we turn into our direction11
Everywhere there are snowdrops, even though it's only the beginning of February12
Markings with birdhouses at the top :)13
Newly arranged path14
They have also provided for the tired :)15
A lot of work was done. The old path ran further to the right16
Miners' refreshment place17
Each time it's harder to climb onto Baba :)18
group19
We complete the southern ridge and head towards Kal20
Everything passes eventually, this one won't last much longer21
Kal, a rather broadly named area22
Winter will be harsh. At this house there is more firewood each time :)23
Nostalgia, although unusually painted24
view back on traversed ridge25
Mountain hut on Kal, somewhat oversized for today's times26
Mrzica justified its name this time27
Towards Gozdnik it almost blew us away28
Shelter at the top which was very useful due to the wind29
Inside not even a breath of wind. Praise to the builders :)30
Here the descent from Gozdnik ends.31
St. Mohor, from which the village name Šmohor also originates.32
Hut on Šmohor33
Sign.34
Direction to Laško.35
Already visible in the distance.36
A little asphalt and then the last descent.37
Just right flat. The day is departing.38

I did the trail last week on 23rd and 24th June because the weather forecast was favorable. I had a little trouble finding the start of the trail. I parked at the parking lot by the Spa and after exiting the underpass under the railway I didn't find signs for the Rečiška trail but for B1 - Path of Three Churches, which is also a suitable starting point as it leads to St. Michael. Since I didn't know that then, I went to the starting point at the railway station and from there along the road to Šmihel. From there on there were no orientation problems. I overnighted at the mountain hut on Kal and met a very friendly and helpful caretaker there. It wasn't crowded, probably because it was midweek and no foreigners. The next day I completed the rest of the trail. For lunch I stopped at the hut on Šmohor, where I was also kindly served. From there I returned to Laško via Tolsti vrh and Malič. The best view seemed to me from Mrzlica, the most beautiful part of the trail was the ascent to Gozdnik. On Tolsti someone destroyed the stamp, why? I also picked up a tick on the way, so some protection against them is not superfluous.

The original Rečiška is too long for wet forecasts, so we looked for an alternative. We found it in Zg. Rečica, which offers two comfortable circular variants along most of the original route. With quite some luck we dryly walked the longer of the two nasmeh. A thunderstorm raged close to us from *clear* sky and in a few moments showed its power with waterfalls of water, lightning and thunder. We caught a couple of heavy drops, luckily nothing worse passed by velik nasmeh. All in all it came to 25 km and 1600 m ascent.

Coordinates of starting point (Zg. Rečica): 46.169703, 15.158525
We started in Zg. Rečice, parked under Slomšek church 1
The church is of special shape, work of Plečnik's assistant Valentinčič2
This is the work of local artisans.3
A cloudy day was forecast, but some clear skies appeared anyway.4
All directions in these areas lead to Šmohor, verified multiple times :)5
Look, look, what a beautiful day it turned into ... hopefully it lasts6
Here we emerged from the forest path right below Šmohor.7
Newly rebuilt ...8
We also visited nearby Tolsto.9
St. Mohor on Šmohor.10
We went neither left nor right, but to Gozdnik.11
At these two weekend huts the path turns to Gozdnik.12
Bivouac on the top, quite a few hikers.13
Path cleared down to the roots to Mrzlica. It is much more visited than Gozdnik.14
Communication tower on its summit.15
Mrzlica, the highest peak of the Rečiška trail.16
Kal peak, no special fitness required :)17
Mountain hut on Kal. The terrace now has outdoor access.18
Zaselek Kal. Through the valley is a shortcut to Zg. Rečica.19
On Ostrem vrh the first drops caught us.20
Oh dear. The thunderstorm came from Kum, with lightning and thunder too.21
We are already on Babah. Apart from a few drops nothing wetter has caught us yet :)22
The storm fortunately continued its path along the neighbouring ridge for us.23
Gozdnik was sunning itself. Probably not a single drop reached there.24
At Knap. Here past the spring we turn towards Zg. Rečica.25
Storm is brewing in the sky again, but we are already in the valley.26
The bell tower of the church where we started this morning.27
GPS track of the hiked trail. It showed 25 km and 1600 m of ascent.28

Nice greetings to all. I would like to cross the Rečiška circular mountain trail. I'm interested if there are GPS tracks in gpx format somewhere, or if someone can send them to me. Damir

From Laško to Mrzlica the trail is fantastic and exemplarily maintained and deserves the title "Most Beautiful Mountain Trail"; the continuation however is, excuse the expression, a big mess and shame for those who should take care of it.
From the hut on Mrzlica my wife and I set off as the signpost by the hut shows, left along the road and after almost an hour of walking we learned shocked from a passerby that we completely missed the direction. We had to return to the hut on Mrzlica where we took the path shown to us by a guest of the hut. But after just a few dozen meters we didn't know where again, as we found ourselves at a junction of three paths, no trace of any markings. We chose the far right and luckily hit it. I won't even talk about several similar searches for the path all the way to the point where the signpost showed the direction to Gozdnik. I'll just say that the second part of the trail greatly spoiled the impression of an otherwise beautiful trail. I don't understand how someone who should be aware of what a marker's job is can be so indolent and irresponsible, half of the loop is marked as well as it can be, the other half as I described.

Maks, I agree, but still... having a map with you is good, besides a bit of searching can spice up the adventure... my opinion.
Anger is unnecessary here, but it could really be better marked!
Anyway... congratulations on completing the trail!nasmeh

Thanks for the congratulations! I've cooled down a bit. On the other hand, I still can't understand the people who take care of marking this wonderful trail. Some 5-6 signposts and a few markings on trees would solve everything.

I accept the criticism regarding the map, but who could have thought that half of the most beautiful circular tour in 2019 is so poorly (catastrophically) marked.

My friend and I did this trail three days later than you two in the clockwise direction. From Laško to Zavrate then to Baba, Ostri vrh... We slept in the hut on Mrzlica. Personally it's really one of the nicest circular trails for me. I had the PZS app on my mobile and we had no problems on the trail. What was even the nicest is we stuffed ourselves with blueberries and drank fresh water from Gozdnik towards Šmohorje. Definitely we'll repeat it next year. Not to mention the super service on Mrzlica :P

After years of postponing, yesterday I finally walked the RPP! What can I say...long, strenuous, beautiful and ugly at the same time! I walked for almost thirteen hours, enjoyed, talked with locals, had crises (on the ascent to Gozdnik) and relived memories at Šmohorje, where about 20 years ago we had the national orienteering championship.
The trail is worth every step and glance, but still question if I'll repeat it...maybe!
Good luck!

Congratulations! I did it alone years ago in two parts, for one day it was too big a bite for me. But they had "first aid" at every checkpoint back then. Do they still have it?

Yesterday we repeated the half circle again, namely from Mrzlica to Šmohorje.
Right after the steep descent from Mrzlica to Šmohorje, at the beginning of the meadow new blue-yellow markings (Path of Memories and Comradeship) greeted us and directed us across the meadow back to the path between Kal and Mrzlica. This is very irresponsible behavior of an unknown marker, if he doesn't know the path he shouldn't mess around far and wide.
About the path section from there to the branch to Gozdnik you have already said everything. Nothing to add.
At Gozdnik there are two direction signs to Šmohorje. On the sign pointing in the direction we came from it says 2.45 hours to Šmohorje and on the one leading to Baškovnik above Zabukovica and from there to Šmohorje 2 hours. For the first variant we have never needed more than 1.45 hours.
Bad mood is really well fixed by the very friendly staff at Kal, Mrzlica and Šmohorje.

Hello mountain friends. One question please correct me. Would such a timetable for the Rečiška trail be OK?
ŽP Laško - Mrzlica 7 hours
Mrzlica - ŽP Laško - 6 hours
Thanks
