Another report from someone hooked on military history. Two weeks ago on Saturday I visited the Slovenian equivalent of Monte Cassino, i.e. Skalnica or Holy Mountain. Understandably via the most "crazy" path called "through trenches", or could also be "through tunnels" (total 3) or "caving". Well, it doesn't seem to me the best idea that the official path marked with circles largely coincides with the mountain bike downhill track, after all cyclists already have quite a few other tracks there. But the morning hour was obviously too early to check how "infantry" and "cavalry" coexist in practice... That most famous one under Francis of Assisi I hardly recognized from the pictures on Walk of Peace pages and similar ones. Possible I missed something, but surely no warning signs etc. before it, only Knafelc circle and arrow above the entrance. On the steep part there are really just a sample of wedge-shaped and carved steps, otherwise the method "place foot somewhere on wet rock and before weight transfer make sure the sole grips". Initially thick rope then cable laid on the ground on the left side (not fixed to the wall as in pics), but easily grab and lift by a meter, so they do their job. Maybe officially prescribe one-way from west to east, can't imagine meeting on that steep part. I allow the possibility that the tunnel is interesting only first time, tourists mostly drive up, so maybe not much traffic through the tunnel. Now question for locals. When we leave the tunnel, we climb to Francis of Assisi and along the ridge "promenade" walk to the church, on the right side notice this on the pic. Obviously something written in Italian (don't master it) and right part missing. Is this that monument to Italian soldiers that once stood at Francis of Assisi place? And if yes, what happened to it and how did Italians just "swallow" the relocation? Clear to me that north of Holy Mountain (Vodiče) plenty of "archaeological" material left for next independent project. Among other things OSM map shows "tunnel 800 m". Is it really a tunnel (like on Sabotin from hut past pyramids), accessible and passable? And one more from curiosity. Those arranged parking near Prevala roundabout were more or less empty on nice Saturday. But afternoon much more "tin" on gravel right by last sharp bend before roundabout. So probably public parking too, where park without risk of raised wipers, not to mention drastic measures? Thanks in advance for info.
