Quick hop to Holy Mountain - Skalnica. After a couple of foggy days the sirocco cleared the sky and we were ready for action, a missed opportunity does not return even if only 681 m asl ........... , through the cave and also a view of the crib... a few pics

A peak you can drive to by car is just right when walking becomes a luxury. Hoping to at least see the mountains from afar easily, I made two car ascents. A bit more luck with views on 15.4.2014, the red sun charmed on 30.3.2014.
The setting sun gilded the white facade of the Svetogorska basilica (30.3.14)1

The path from Grgar over Križce to Holy Mountain is quite overgrown with thorns in the central part and consequently hard to pass.

Primorska regions always delight me anew, with pleasant locals, a Mediterranean climate and karst landscape.
In the afternoon after an errand, I had enough time for my first visit to the Holy Mountain, one of the three main shrines here. Together with Brezje and Ptujska Gora, they form a triangular hub of divine energies of Slovenia. The space around the church I felt as very positive and it calms and relaxes a person greatly. With exceptional views for this modest height of 681 m, where the entire Bohinj ridge, Krn, Kanin massif are clearly visible, to the south Monfalcone with the Gulf of Trieste, it adds just the dot on the i. In winter the Holy Mountain always gets lightly snowed, up to 20 cm, snow does not stay long. Pilgrims come from Prekmurje, Ljubljana, Italy, Hungary, sunburnt Goriciansjezen go to the mountain for refreshment. The pub was closed, so I found water behind the churchmrk pogled. At Preval 380 m lower I finally got two radlers and coffee and very pleasant talks with locals. One of them said that in winter for New Year in Bovec they toasted with Jägermeister and Coke even with local Janez Janša. They asked him for help with renovation of desperate Primorska roads, Janša to them: we can't do anything, all already stolenvelik nasmeh. They to him burst into laughter.
Thus on a very pleasant day at sunset I drove to home Ljubljana 1 h and 102 km awaynasmeh.

Yesterday with PD Tržič to Holy Mountain (681 m) and on the way back to the valley also to the neighboring hill Vodice (651 m). We went up through the WWI trenches. Soon we came upon a short tunnel. That one was not problematic. But we reached a large tunnel that is 260 m long. Here a helmet and headlamp are mandatory, and poles must go into the backpack. In places the ceilings are quite low and you have to duck. At one stretch of the tunnel it is so low that you have to go on all fours. Suddenly the tunnel becomes vertical. When climbing the tunnel, a kind of cable helps us here, which hangs freely from the start of this protection to the end. Twice we even have to step over this cable. The path is wet, rocky, slippery. But we passed it safely. Now a pleasant path awaits us to the platform before the Holy Mountain and the Holy Mountain itself with the beautiful basilica. Beside it is an inn where we can refresh ourselves. Then we headed to the neighboring peak Vodice, where there stands a magnificent mausoleum dedicated to the Italian general Gonzaga. Descent was to the village Zagora.

I think house no. 22 on pic 21 is in village Grgarske Ravne. Never heard of Grabarske Ravnemežikanje. On Vodice behind monument with eagles on pillar (pic 20) entrance to very extensive cavern system in multiple levels definitely worth seeing - pity if you didn't descend into it.

mirank, I corrected the village name. Yes, the house number of the village was a bit damaged and I didn't read the name exactly. I didn't search for the names of these villages very precisely. Usually I also photograph the entrance sign of the village by the road. It seems I overlooked it. Yes, we saw the sign for the caverns on Vodice. Unfortunately, we'll have to check it out another time, this time we were too rushed for the bus.

slamca, you are right. I never write how many of us there are on hikes.

Yesterday I was on the Holy Mountain. I searched for the stamp but didn't find it anywhere - it is true that I was a bit later and the souvenir shop in the basilica was closed - if the stamp happens to be there... The restaurant was closed (open Thu-Sun), at the cemetery there is indeed a hiking box but from RTV (with a "wrong" stamp which also has no profile or torn rubber base with relief...)

Yesterday's trail was interesting. At least for me, who hasn't been here before. On the Holy Mountain nothing warm. But in sheltered parts of the path really pleasant walking. We started in Nova Gorica at 100 m above sea level. Along the path past Prevala, where there's monument to Boroević. Continued on path towards Holy Mountain, to place where you go into tunnels. And through tunnels I for first time continued to other side. Then some steep to statue of St. Francis and on to basilica on Holy Mountain. There we rested a bit in shelter of Franciscans' garden, where three geese greeted us. Then they withdrew. Loud they are. We descended to Grgar. And along gravel road, it was trodden, don't know maybe they'll asphalt it, went to Preški vrh under Vodiče. There we looked for path that leads to Kekec hill right to inn and then to valley. Tunnels are 280 meters long. Walked total 19 km. And highest was Holy Mountain 682 m.

Thanks to guide Marjan and PD Nova Gorica guide Jože, we visited Holy Mountain and Škabrijel. On Sunday in clear, spring weather, together almost 50 hikers. The path was varied, otherwise slippery due to recent rain. With our thoughts on the events of World War I, through trenches and caverns. Over 40,000 victims, so much unnecessary suffering and victims. The longest cavern over 200 meters, we used headlamps, helmets. On Holy Mountain a basilica from the 16th century, statue of St. Francis, and wire sculpture of St. Francis, gift of the Strunjan Franciscans from 2014. At the top fascinating views, among pines towards Sabotin, all the way to the sea. Soča with the Solkan bridge. On the other side the village Grgar, then towards Korada, Matajur and the Julian Alps. From Skutnik to Krn, Triglav and Bohinj mountains. And towards Čavnu and further towards Trstelj and Black Hills to Cerje. We descended towards Prevala, past the monument to commander Borojević and ascent to the top of Škabrijel. Finally, all this for me the first time. On Škabrijel we also met hikers from Italy. The tower also offers nice views. Descent past the Kekec inn, unfortunately everything was occupied, so we will come another time for pancakes. Another descent and a stop at the inn Na livadi in Ajdovščina, where we had lunch in a pleasant atmosphere. All hikers grateful to both guides for safe guiding, organization and all explanations. In total 700 m elevation gain, 14 km.

The path over Križce is so overgrown with blackberries and fallen branches that I suggest to the mountaineering association Nova Gorica or the tourist association Grgar that they remove both direction signs - on the road to Holy Mountain and in Grgar. And of course also the description on this page. There are some fairly fresh red dots with okays and red ribbons, but amid the densest thorns the marks disappear. It is not a path, at most game trails, and even those are barely discernible.
For a breakthrough, hedge clippers or a saw are needed. And torn pants should not be a pity.
