Slovenian alpine pastures in all seasons

Already a year has passed since I presented the last planina here when I visited it. I really neglected my column a bit. On 23.05.2019 I visited Planina Goška Ravan on Jelovica. On Jelovica there are as many as 14 planinas. There's actually a lot of work waiting for me here. With a colleague we went on the path from Kropa via Vodiška Planina. The path from Vodiška Planina to Planina Goška Ravan takes a whole hour of walking. We go past two rovts. Ažmanov Rovt is actually a vacation settlement of weekend huts of all kinds. On Planina Goška Ravan we also find a hunting hut and a mountain hut. The planina itself is accessible by car too. The hut is open almost every day of the week except Tuesday. The planina is a pasture. I would need a good map of Jelovica. I'll inquire if it's even available.

Yesterday we went past two pastures above Drežniške Ravne. But we should take more time and look at them closer.

After a long time I came across two pastures again on the tour to Jerebikovec. These are the pastures Spodnji and Zgornji Kozjek. From the name one could conclude that goats were grazed here in the past. We can visit the pastures on the way to Jerebikovec from Radovna. Above Radovna there are quite a few pastures. Spodnji Kozjek is a smaller pasture. On it we notice even some object. The Zgornji Kozjek pasture is larger and quite an extensive grassy pasture. It looks like they don't graze here but only mow. On the pasture there are two huts in ruins. The larger one even had a cistern where rainwater flowed. Nearby there is still some object that is still used. The pasture is reached by forest road from Radovna.

Quite some time has passed since I posted my last pasture. I forgot about them a bit. Yesterday on tour to Rogatec I visited pasture Zgornji Špeh. What a name! Since I forgot about pastures a bit I didn't even photograph it well. It's a grazing pasture. Still now a herd of cattle is grazing. The grazing part of the pasture is limited by electric fence. On the hillock of the pasture we spot a large cross with wish bell. It's a bit off the main path to Rogatec but worth the effort. Ring three times for three wishes. Next to it is a neat chapel. Of course locked but I peeked inside a bit. On the opposite hillock of the pasture we find even a chapel. Under the road that leads further to saddle Kal there was once a huge high mountain farm with outbuilding. Sadly it looks like abandoned for quite some time. Old owners gone, for young it's too heavy mountain bread.

It will be almost a year since I posted the last pasture. Already two months will have passed since the Škofja Loka retirees conquered Galetovec and went over Belska pasture. That's how it looks.

Back to that Pokljuka road that leads to Bohinj we went over beautiful small pasture Ilovec. I didn't know this pasture. But it pleasantly surprised me. Actually it's small. On this small pasture a large herd of cattle is grazing. On it there's a nice hut. Next to it even pigsty with some strange breed of pigs. Haven't seen such. From afar I'd even mistake them for sheep.

In July the Škofja Loka retirees were on Montaževa high plateau and went over all three pastures in Sella Nevea. The most extensive is the central one - pasture Pekol. We drive to it on a nice though winding asphalted road from Sella Nevea. On the pasture itself there is extensive parking - for now still free. If Italians start imitating us, it will soon be paid. Pasture Pekol is the most extensive with large barns for livestock and fenced nice pastures. Livestock at night in barns. This is a dairy pasture. At the end of the pasture there is a large dairy where they bring milk and make excellent cheese that can be bought in their shop. Next to it there is also a large catering facility - one can drive there by car. The pasture itself is the starting point for numerous beautiful mountain tours from king Montaž onwards. I have been there countless times and conquered all peaks. The easiest and most accessible peak is Špik Hude police. Beautiful is the traverse of the Špiki, which starts soon after Špik Hude police. We went over the entire pasture Pekol, over pasture Larice and pasture Cregnedul di Sopra. On pasture Larice livestock was in the barn. On pasture Cregnedul di Sopra no livestock was noticed. If I want to present all these pastures more accurately, I must once hike them alone and photograph.

This time I went to see the little-known alpine pasture Lepi potok in the Tržič area. It is located not far from Jelendol. From the road that leads further to alpine pasture Zgornja Dolga Njiva, at the little bridge to the left by the small power plant a long gravel road leads to an atypical alpine pasture. Currently the road is closed for repairs. The pasture barely reminds of our classic alpine pastures. This is actually the legacy of Count Born, who used these remote corners for hunting purposes. Already across the bridge, where the power plant stands on the left, on the right is a wooden building that probably once served Born's foresters. Much higher, where this good gravel road actually ends, stood Born's hunting hut, which is now renovated and the state rents it out. Under the road flows a clear mountain stream and the water is piped to this small power plant. Suddenly the water dries up higher and reappears even higher - interesting. After this former Born hut higher up there are three small clearings on which stand three objects that are actually modern weekend cottages and serve that purpose. Perhaps in Born's times there was more clearing and they actually served for grazing. Nowadays it looks like hunters are no longer interested, because the hunting observation post collapsed. Under it some wooden remains, as if some wooden hut stood here. Count Born was a passionate hunter and liked to hunt in Tržič areas. He was a good master and his legacy is still visible today.

This is not our alpine pasture though - Alpe del Lago - it also has a Slovenian name - Jezerska planina - It's near Belopaške or Mangart lakes. It's a spacious flat alpine pasture. Looks like they grazed here in summer too. On the pasture economic objects - at least it looks so - didn't go closer.

The alpine pasture is really in Italy, but a guy with horses by the lake told me that quite some land there by the lakes is owned by Rateče people. If it's still like that I don't know.

To Planina Pekel from the east side. From the forest road, in the Konavčev žleb area, pathless uphill. We hit traces of a little path that brings us to the left to the SE side of the pasture. Straight ahead the path goes to Planina Klek, sharp right we reach Planina Pekel. On the pasture there are no traces of buildings, adorned only by two small ponds. About happenings on the pasture testify only cow pats, livestock comes here from Planina Klek. We continue to Planina Klek where the weather worsens and it starts snowing.
