Given that there can be much more snow than 40 cm in drifts and it needs at least two days of sun exposure for the initial crystals to transform and at least somewhat bond to the old snow, I did a conditioning tour on Jakob.
The path via Toško čelo to Jakob is very good in this variable winter, almost dry sand. The highest parts of Polhograjci just under 900 m are lightly whitened. There were much fewer visitors up there today than usual, some cycling enthusiasts as well. For a cycling tour, one still needs to dress well, because the month without the letter R is still far away.

Today's winter MTB tour to Jakob was muddy, snowy, icy, cold, but very nice. In peaceful quiet and cycling solitude I made a nice 35 km loop via Toško čelo - Jakob - Studenčice - Medno - Ljubljana nasmeh

. In the heights with a breeze it was much colder than in the valley.
The tour is now excellent for cyclists experienced in winter riding conditions velik nasmeh

Also here according to the story a strong east wind prevailed during snowfall.

Since there won't be much time in the future, I used the late afternoon for a slightly longer tour to Jakob this time.
To avoid monotonous paths, I pedaled towards Dobrova in the direction of Polhov Gradec, at Gabrje I turned into the valley towards Osredki and Beli to the Topol saddle. From there ascent to Jakob, where I shared a short time with the setting sun. After all the beauty in the fresh air at pleasant 15°C, I descended via Mamovec to Žlebe and via Medno finished the sausage. Well, on the menu for dinner with a hungry stomach it wasn't that, but I made spaghetti with Lušt tomato sauce velik nasmeh

In the afternoon just before 17:00 I'm already heading to Medno, at the Preska fire station I turn into the valley towards Studenčice, left over the weekend houses and Mamovec to the western ridge of Jakob. There for the eastern ridge I use the northern Jakob transverse path. There was still a jump with the bike on the summit slope to Jakob. At the time of arrival we gathered up there three MTB cyclists. Weather with some sun and clouds, so it wasn't too hot, otherwise the northern ascent to the top, it was blowing just enough. Return I did with descent over Toško čelo after the deserved ascent.
This tour is two-hour with some stop at the top. Best, Rok nasmeh

Initially from Preska towards Studenčice, but only to the end of the valley.

In between I catch Swiss Air, which accelerated with low flight due to the hills.

Since it's getting quite warm, you have to water the garden only in the morning, and choose tours early on northern slopes.
So at 7:15 I started over Sora and there turned into the always very cold Ločnica valley, which pampered me for whole 7-8 km, as long as it is. Half ascent towards Katarina still cold, then higher up it was getting warmer. At 9 I was already descending over Toško čelo and avoided the worse heat. Colleagues coming from Ljubljana side over Toško čelo were already sweating and puffing uphill with bikes.
They say that if you exercise a bit in the morning, you tolerate the heat better during the day.
In the afternoon there is also a good cooling alternative - jump into Sava! velik nasmeh

Already quite a few cars to Osolnik in the morning.

To make something of the tour, I climb another 100 m above Brezovica pri Jakobu

I used the late afternoon clear sky for the ascent to nearby Jakob.
Cyclists were already turning back at Toško čelo at this time, but I continue further towards Katarina. There at the saddle I meet the weather station manager, who tells me that a completely new one is already being built a bit higher up, Mr. Pečenko from ARSO also came up to check.
I jump to the ridge of Jakob and descend via the northern path over Mamovec to the valley. Up there it was blowing a little, at sunset the air was cooling more and more. Not yet a nice October, then a long and harsh winter is expected.

The new VP with foundations for attachments is this time a bit higher at 700 m.

The Mednski hill by the motel was attacked by bark beetles, so they felled it.

Winter will knock on the door too soon, so it's worth using every autumn time in nature.
With MTB I ride through peaceful autumn-colored forests of the Ravnik and Katarina plateau to nearby Jakob in the late afternoon sun.
Up there I meet two bikers of similar age, so the calm conversation flowed nicely. We recalled memories of our independence, joked that we are not old yet and said let the young be old, we are not, he,he velik nasmeh

!. Together we ate juicy mandarins and soon headed to the valley. Later the sun was setting, so it suddenly cooled down a lot. At Toško čelo oncoming cars had harder time spotting me due to dusk. It was a nice short tour to maintain some fitness and enjoy autumn purple colors nasmeh

In the morning well dressed in the cold I mount the MTB and push towards the snowy Jakob.
Toško čelo is still completely covered with snow, higher at Katarina completely winterly, like a good January winter. Over the Ravnik plateau to Katarina the road is mostly clear with some snow here and there and some roe deer in between. Above Schvarzmann at the barrel in the forest the real ice rink begins. There you have to ride with your head and you get through nicely. Further on the flat ridge before Jakob is the hardest spot with bumpy palm-sized convex large ice that wants to make the front wheel slip multiple times even at very low speed, with only slight braking on the rear wheel. The circuit around Jakob is rideable again until the last slope, where the rear wheel starts slipping. With studs it could also be ridden. I walked back that same 10m section, further it went normally again. On the tour I didn't meet any cyclist, only some regular older hikers. Mom at home says no one is as stupid as me to meet someone on the way velik nasmeh

Old historical ethnologists said that we Slovenes refreshed ourselves at the beginning of the new year with flowing spring water, well I did something similar with the bike to Jakob velik nasmeh

In the morning at 10 there were no living souls on the roads anywhere, only a cold Russian from the east was rampaging around. Well prepared I barely warmed up to the top of Toško čelo, legs really started burning only from Katarina to Jakob. Up there later more and more nature lovers came, but only a handful compared to the previous holiday. In valleys noticeable smog from fireworks and also more frequent wood burning. Up top I nicely chatted with quite a few acquaintances, then rushed home on the nearest path under warm shower. At 60km/h with cold you really can't joke anymore eek

Viharnik, you are a true demonstrator of the saying: "healthy mind in healthy body". Most of us at 10 am were still looking for something refreshing to wake up or cure the hangover. Really nice start to 2016. Good luck onwards.

Adding more, hope someone cleans up the remains of New Year's partying under St. Jakob and between Rog and Jeterbenk at the crossroads there is trash. Such nice little hills but unfortunately quite some trash.

Late afternoon went to Jakob to check if southwester in heights is more lively.
In Ljubljana weak wind, on Toško čelo some breeze, on Katarina already pulling more, on top Jakob noticeably stronger with proper wind, there around 50-60 km/h. Descent to valley on ridge road via Studenčece flew like mad skier!. Followed short flat section past Medna, with visit to Brane in Vižmarje. Great tour, cyclists already out, cheers! nasmeh
