St. Jacob, Rog, Jeterbenk (circular tour)

Today I had to stretch a bit, so I headed straight to the nearby Polhograjci. I did one of the nicest routes in this hill range, so I'll describe it for those who only swear by Šmarna gora.

We drive behind the Medno motel, left towards Slavkov dom, where at the top of the hill we turn right into Žlebe. Then straight ahead on the asphalt road all the way to the sheepfold and the slope to the left (Here by the orange new house still under the hill, we turn right). Go another two hundred meters up the asphalt road into the hill, and when on the right by the road in the space by the forest, we park. Then we always follow the gravel road through Ravanški grič, higher into the forest, all the way in front of the Kozomer farm. Here at the fence, turn right on the oval cart track, to the last concrete hayloft, where we turn into the right cart track. Further, 20m higher, we check out the next longitudinal cart track, reach it and turn right. The mentioned cart track on the S side of Jakob makes a left bend (semicircle) and joins the upper path which crosses Jakob (east and west ridge of Jakob). Then left to the marker. The path continues to Rog 798m, along the ridge all the time. Then a quick hop to Jeterbenk. For the return, find a bit above the marker under Jeterbenk a bench on the little hill, a bit further the road to the right, which cuts across the S slopes of Rog and descends to the Kozomer farm, from where we ascended.

Up there was wonderful air and light snowfall with NE wind and quite cold. Real idyll! Kids and dogs had the most fun with the snowflakes.nasmeh

I traversed Rog and Jakob yesterday, starting and finishing in Studenčice.

Viharnik, were you maybe last week at Osolnik?

Just today I wanted to go up but the road due to works at Sora only goes to the bridge (junction Katarina or Škofja Loka) and even that is only permitted for local access.

That's not true. On Saturday we drove by car to the end of the asphalt. We went to check the start at Hom.

I drove a bit from the bridge over Sora on Sunday. Everywhere signs - driving prohibited, only for local access to the end of the road, so I turned around. Probably the thing was already over before and they didn't remove the warning signs.

Today we hikers above Katarina, regarding the sun, had luck like a dog in church. Only the 50m ridges were bathed in divine sun, but the morning was the nicest.
I head up from Žlebe under Sv. Marjeta, cross the ridge at Katarina, on to Rog and Sv. Jakob. There for the third time in a row a touring skier descended in the legs-together technique through the powder into Ločnica. There was huge attendance. Katarina was parked up to the last corner, up there processions of various hikers, families with kids on sleds, mountaineering groups, many venerable seniors, young couples, dogs walked. Nice pictures say more. Best - Rok

Today's morning tour to the nearby hills above Katarina was, despite the bad weather forecast, quite nice.
I start the path this time at Slavkov dom on Golem Brdo and continue to the "Pri Hrastu" junction on the Jetrbenk ridge. Here I meet four older hikers, all from different parts of Slovenia, to whom, due to not knowing the terrain, I promise guidance. We extended the path to Rog and the rest of the ridge towards Sv. Jakob. In between it was blowing from the south and occasionally it sprinkled lightly from the clouds, but no real rain yet. Paths are now muddy and dry everywhere, only on the Rog plateau, where snow lasted longest, somewhat tundra-like. We returned via Katarina, where we also turned into the Schvarzman inn - Gostilna na Vihri 740m. Pleasant inn, despite not the best surrounding inns (too much traffic), left us a nice feeling. In between I also learned from the conversation that the gentleman from the group was also a caretaker at Vodnikov dom for six years. Later he decided to devote some free time to himself too. All satisfied after just the right tour we went home for lunch.

I heard that there are quite a few snakes in Polhograjci. Recently a friend saw two on a very crowded path to Jeterbenk. At the top in the logbook it apparently also says people should watch out for snakes. Does anyone maybe know what species they are?

I hang around up there all the time but haven't run into snakes yet. Of course they are surely there, but due to the crowds (at least on paths) they usually retreat to solitude beforehand.
But one summer I saw quite a few snakes at the top of Iški Vindgar and Pekel Falls near Borovnica - black adder.
If you don't rush into a snake, it also makes reasonable moves and retreats, so no panic.nasmeh

Thanks, Viharnik. I agree with you on everything and have absolutely nothing against snakes. I just thought someone knows exactly which ones. I plan to go there soon and hope to see one.

I'm a very frequent visitor to Polhograjci. Years ago one day I saw two small adders by the path to Grmada. Otherwise never. I have relatives who live directly under Jeterbenk and they say that on the sunny slopes of Jeterbenk vipers like to stay, but those areas are off the hiking trails and there are no dangers at all. And I wish you safe steps.

Leave the snake alone, as it is the original inhabitant of that area. We are just guests on its territory. Best regardsnasmeh

A nice day beckoned again. This time without a car, on foot from home over Mamovc, Jakob, Rog and Jetrbenk. Since Zlodej scared me about avalanche danger, I left the skis at home again and took the dog with me. On Rog I met two enthusiastic skiers, which tempted me to go home for skis and open the season from Jetrbenk towards Marje church and the parking below it. Through the forest it was fantastic (though steep as hell), on the path less so; I need new poles (one is broken).

I also met below Rog two local skiers who first skied from Jeterbenk south through steep forest. Later they went to Rog and into Žlebe. One of them was a long-distance hiker on the European trail, as I learned talking to the farmer below Jakob. Today's skiing was divine here with lots of powder.

Before the real weather worsening I use the time for a nice walk in Polhograjci.
I start the path from Žlebi and climb to St. Jacob on the still snowy north ridge of Jakob. Today up there were quite some serious hikers with rucksacks, who had other plans ahead. I quickly continue to Rog then visit Jeterbenk and via road through Kozomer farm close the circle to the start at the end of Žlebi. On the path there was quite some south wind announcing weather change. Overnight Polhograjci will be all white.nasmeh

Early afternoon I do a tour from St. Mary above Žlebi to Rog and St. Jakob. After a rainy night the morning weather settled a bit, but it still surprised me twice with a shower on the tour.
It is still warm and there is south wind, but on Sunday these hills will get well whitened. There is no mud on this path, so I recommend the tour-walk.

I've had this path in mind for some time already, and today I do it. I make some kind of figure eight, starting from Slavkov dom over the ridge to Jeterbenk and further past Katarina to Sv. Jakob and back over Rog to the valley.

Today something similar. Start at Slavkov dom, then to Jeterbenk and further to Rog above Katarina. From Rog still to Sv. Jakob. On return stop at Porentov vodnjak and via Petelinca and Golega brda back to Slavkov dom. Path muddy in some parts. Between Rog and Jakob still quite some snow, if the sun showed for a minute it wouldn't hurt.

Today I set a solo pace,
all the way to Jakob for fresh air.
With first stop at Jeterbenk
to count knights' treasure clink.

Follows next hill Rog,
from where nice view around.
And already go towards Jakob,
follows chat on warm bench.
