Yesterday we went to Stegovnik and did a nice loop tour. From Dol we went up the road to the weekend house, then we chose a slightly modified path to Lojtra, cutting the corner that you otherwise take to Močnikovo sedlo. We returned through the window on an unmarked path. The path has no special features, fallen trees (if any) have been removed. The views were phenomenal! This Stegovnik is a very nice hiking goal! That's right. Uphill on some parts the path is poorly marked. I had the route description with me, which you get on this side. I didn't have major problems. On the way back the path is marked. At some places there could be more markings. lp

Yesterday for the first time in a long hiking career we visited Stegovnik, which exceeded all our expectations, an exceptional mountain for views wherever you turn - nice. Weather 5+, path locally muddy and very sparsely marked. From home below Storžič via the western to the top and back via the eastern path we needed 6 hours of moderate walking, including 2 longer stops.

Well, I have to mention for collectors, that there is no stamp at the top, at least we didn't find it.

Štegovnik - circular tour from Gaberčev rovt around Javorniki, via northern (western) path and western ridge up and eastern ridge down and southern (eastern) path back to planina Javornik and start Štegovnik with its relatively low height is an exceptional viewpoint worth visiting, but it shouldn't be underestimated also due to the approach, the rating partially difficult is justified. Hiking from Tržič direction can start already in Grahovšah (past Rekar) or at mountain hut under Storžič (at Javorniški preval), depending on which path you take to Štegovnik, but at this time of year consider short day and relatively long path (takes cca. good 7 hours from the valley). Therefore it's sensible to drive up the forest road a bit higher e.g. to Gaberčev rovt, possible even to planina Javornik. But since there's a barrier at the end of the last houses, remember to have some coins and donate for »roadside parking maintenance« (currently 1 Eur one way). When on the plain, left GRS shelter and planina Konjščica, straight Dol and right planina Javornik, we orient ourselves, further on we walk mostly on marked paths, which are also satisfactorily marked, especially at all important junctions with additional signs and direction arrows on trees. Ascent through the window on the western side of Štegovnik is a short and interesting attraction, continuation is partially demanding but not too difficult. From western summit (1684m) to eastern summit (1692m) we walk almost flat but through varied terrain. Eastern ridge downhill is more ridgy, locally very steep and further among numerous dwarf pines and bushes more bushy - grassy. When we reach dense forest at the saddle between Štegovnik and Ruš, the markings for further path choice are clear and well visible. Hiking under Štegovnik, under its southern face, is locally hindered by fallen and broken trees from the last major ice storm. From the marked path it's worth detouring to both Javorniki, in our return direction first to Mali and then to Veliki (also called Ženiklovec), both - technically easy approaches and with nice views far around. The described path to Štegovnik is recommended especially in dry conditions, otherwise it can be very slippery in some parts and dangerous for slipping in places. And about the dilemma from the beginning of this forum: whether to take a dog to Štegovnik or not, … for an Irish setter through the window the otter or its bypass represented quite a trauma, other obstacles were not problematic.

Well if you go to the mountains a few hours after snowfall you can expect problems and today was such a day. At the starting point in Dol there was only about five centimeters of snow but it increased with altitude. At the top there was more than 30 cm new. Already below the hut it was sinking to my knees in the open. Further to Močnikovo sedlo it was a bit better from there on mostly again to knees. In the steepest part before the path fork I thought I would have to turn back. Twice it sank to my waist. When I finally reached the ridge I thought now it would be better, but snow drifts awaited me. Whoever knows the path knows how steep it is there and if it sinks to your knees (if I turned to the north side even deeper) you can imagine how strenuous it was. A bit I also felt the flu I had three weeks ago. But despite that after three hours I reached the top. No cloud just cold wind blowing so I soon turned. When returning the warm sun had already done its, snow had crusted and visibly settled.

Hello! Has anyone been to Stegovnik recently? I've never been there myself. I'm interested in the circular route: Dol - through the window - Stegovnik - Močnikovo sedlo - Dol If you have some mountain hiking experience, can you get lost or is that poorly marked path section well visible? Of course, I'd have descriptions and a zoomed map with me. Is the snow bothersome at all? Maybe it's better to wait for snow-free conditions and when it's drier for a better, nicer experience of conquering this mountain? Thanks for the help.

See my post above. Probably no snow left on the ridge, but on individual shaded sections there might still be some small amounts. Fallen trees can be a problem though.

Done with Stegovnik... from Dol up the marked path over to Močnikovo sedlo, descent to the windows and downhill partly on marked, lower along the stream... currently don't recommend this tour, it comes out like a top obstacle course... lots of annoying fallen trees from Močnikovo sedlo... so I managed a couple of slips due to poorly visible footpaths... snow is around the stream crossing a bit before Pri Lojtri, from Pri Lojtri to the top as well as on descent to windows and then from the saddle between M.Javornik and Stegovnik... ... sometimes quite dangerous!... you have to go a bit off your own and really carefully... it's quite tricky in the steepness... I somehow managed, but since I started only in the afternoon I ran out of time to hop to Bukovec or Ruš...

A large group of us set off from Dol to Stegovnik and Ruš, some fallen trees along the path, otherwise fine conditions.
