The path over Psica can't be compared at all to the path through Žrelo. Žrelo is almost nowhere exposed, over Psica almost the whole path is on a very exposed ridge. Protections are nice, almost new, but anyone with vertigo or not used to drops left and right shouldn't go there at all.

We returned that way on Sunday (up through Žrelo). Didn't seem demanding at all to us and I must say it can't even remotely compare to the mentioned paths.

I have only a few secured paths behind me: both Gradiški, Triglav from Kredarica and Mala Mojstrovka. How does Psica compare to the listed? Would you recommend it to a relative beginner of very demanding paths?

Yes, I can recommend it, it's also beautiful (to me the nicest of marked approaches to Storžič). At least Otmarjeva to Tura and Hanzova to Mojstrovka are much, much harder.

After a longer time on the home mountain. Fairy-tale!
Incredibly warm, windless, clear skies ...
From Kališče it was tracked up to a hundred meters below the summit. Further on virgin snow without gear it wouldn't go (hard snow, very dangerous for slipping).
Charged with vitamin D!

All good.

Yesterday on Storžič. From Bašelj. Lots of snow. Flanks are very avalanche-prone! Through bushes and ridge it went bp.
Just one pic. For a taste. Battery died.

A sad day yesterday for the beautiful Storžič, condolences to all relatives who suffered a loss yesterday. The mountain took them to itself.

All of us, out of respect for the high mountains and rescuers, should stay at safer spots.

Stay safe.

I think it's the opposite...mountain didn't take them to itself. Otherwise no words, both tragedy and stupidity. But as in Krn thread said, we just don't understand "addicts".

About such things we need to talk. The more the better.

One thing is conversation and exchange of invaluable experiences, the other are beatings and judgments of people that inevitably appear under such news.

In the way an experienced alpinist presented his recent avalanche experience from Begunjščica, it is sensible and a lesson for all who visit the mountains in winter. Sadly, yesterday's events showed that an accident can happen even to those with the most experience and knowledge of the local terrain.

Comments on "not understanding addicts", "why [did they have to] push there" and calls for billing show the writers' level, who "contribute to a better world" this way ...

I fully agree @zavest

My initial message was not meant for that topic, but just condolences and maybe a useful exchange of information as someone before me wrote; we need to talk.

In no way was it meant as judging, God forbid!

Good luck and safe steps to all.

Uh.... it is very ungrateful to be "smart", since it can happen to any of us. One way or another.
What bothers me most in my eyes is the fact that we always write to the inexperienced or those who push into troubles to stay home, not to play, not to burden GRS guys and the like. And that holds true, and I'll always stand by it.

Snow conditions are published and the danger was 3rd or even 4th degree. The people to whom the accident happened were not clueless, they had experience, knew many unfortunate cases and one could list more. Thus this tragedy is even sadder.

One goes to the mountain precisely because it is there; there is no sense in debating addiction. Still, this is not exactly a case where someone thought it through well and assessed everything.

I kind of agree with this. I've always had problems with the claim that "accidents happen to the inexperienced" or that "rescuers mainly rescue the inexperienced". Rescuers rescue everyone, but in more demanding (wall, avalanche) rescues, the experienced clearly predominate. And yes, winter is an even better example in my opinion. As far as I remember, it almost never happened that an avalanche carried away some inexperienced person. They were always people with mileage who knew very well what they were getting into. So, referencing (in)competence here is a bit off.

Given the increase in hikers or "corona hikers" in the last year and especially those who lately also go to the mountains in winter and seek ever greater challenges, I cannot agree with this. But this is my personal opinion/observation.

Certainly from the GRS side there are numerically far more rescues of inexperienced (slips, sprains, breaks, fatigue, terrain unfamiliarity, ...). Follow SPIN a bit (https://spin3.sos112.si/javno/zemljevid) and you'll soon find out how many rescue actions in the mountains happen every (nice/sunny) weekend.

On the web you can check accident statistics, if someone has the illusion that only alpinists die in the mountains - https://www.grzs.si/resevanje/statistika-nesrec/

NUMBER OF FATAL ACCIDENTS
2018: 31
2019: 43
2020: 33

But in the media, of course, larger accidents with fatalities of various kinds are in the spotlight, like the one that happened now, in which occasionally individuals with more experience are involved - i.e. alpinists or aspiring alpinists, ski alpinists, ...

Official announcements and private activities of GRZS members sometimes cross paths, but hey, we're all just humans, aren't we? Whoever knew Maja and Slavc knows what caliber they were.

Even a doctor, a chain smoker, will tell his patient that smoking is unhealthy. Even if he doesn't follow it himself, it doesn't mean his advice is insincere or even wrong.

Interesting that out of all forumers who contribute useful info in one way or another, the first to react to my few words was Zavest, the main couch master of the Covid forum. No problem, democracy must be, even for trolls. velik nasmeh

But seriously: along with Lukito's opinion (to which I have nothing to add, except that strong wind was forecast), this is also circulating: the avalanche buried four, two got out, called rescuers and helped their buried comrades. During the rescue, the fifth and sixth passed by, who despite warnings from rescuers continued on, until the second part of the tragedy happened.

Is this even true? Maybe someone knows more about it?

@lunatixz
You also have to look at the difficulty of the rescue. Not that there's anything banal there, but yeah, it's completely different to escort back to the valley a panicked Czech woman over Prag or some local day-tripper who got lost under Kamniško sedlo - or even send a helicopter for a hiker who injured her ankle somewhere at Triglav Lakes (the latter no longer limited only to the inexperienced) than to haul a stuck rope team out of the north face of Špik or even send a team and dogs to an avalanche under Begunjščica. Completely different in terms of required training, needed resources, time, risk. And the last two situations happen to the inexperienced only exceptionally.
