On the 3rd picture it's not Vevnica...

@Silvestro, thanks for correction, there I placed Vevnica too close to Mangart. @instrumel, that's why dead end in quotes Via normale goes to Planiška Škrbina over steep grassy terrain. Up nothing special, down quite awkward. At Planiška Škrbina then to Slovenian path, which is again very demanding secured path. One section on ridge even without protections, though quite airy. Wouldn't say via normale is substantially easier, if at all. But secured part much shorter. Anyway ferrata not among most demanding, nor long. In difficulty and length of secured part about level of Gradiška (though such comparisons always ungrateful as different people perceive difficulty differently).

Today circular tour: Zacchi - climbing path to Visoka Ponca and descent over Planiška Škrbina. Since the climbing path is not described and I had some dilemmas I'll give short description. From junction of path from Zacchi towards Srednja Ponca to entry of climbing path quite long approach with quite some cables. The actual climbing part starts around 2060m, ends 100m higher. Path nicely arranged (at one place torn cable replaced by fixed rope - OK). As curiosity, cables are grounded (lightning!). Above ladder still some cables, then orient by cairns, just below summit two more cables. Orientation in good weather not hard. The path itself not steep and actually safer than path from Planiška Škrbina.

The above assessment of conditions from last year still holds for this year. Path from Zacchi to ferrata junction well and freshly marked, ascent over ferrata not overly difficult, most annoying is lots of loose scree and gravel easily triggered. Short section before iron ladder still has rope instead of torn cable. Last part of ascent above ferrata to summit no longer has visible markings (ita red dots), so need to watch more and orient on cairns. Descent to Slovenian side very demanding and "sparingly" secured, especially if arriving at summit via ita ferrata, seems some cable for safety missing here.

No snow, if that's the point of the question.

Conditions on the path similar to last year and the year before, (janez.novak and gams1). I also think the ferrata itself is not the key spot on the route; already before it you need to be careful a few times, e.g. crossing the gully before entry into it. And then when you arrive spoiled by reliable protections at the top and descend towards the notch, you have to quickly switch to the new situation. I think some extra protection on that side would come in handy. Otherwise great tour in wild terrain with a thousand views of the north Mangart face, which shamelessly competes with Triglav's. The tour is also long and tiring, especially if done circularly and now also from Tamar to Planica. When I was last on this path a few years ago, the car was waiting for me in Tamar. What can we do, times change and it's good that a cold beer intervenes in between . How was the connection and safe travels http://stezeinsledi.blogspot.com/2018/08/dve-ponci.html

Today to Visoka Ponca - from Mangart Lakes past Zacchia (closed till 8.12.) up the ferrata, down the normal route. The ferrata itself is not so demanding, more care is needed on the descent to the Planica notch, and the normal route is no joke either. Path newly marked (under summit orient by cairns) and bushes trimmed to the thick cable. Met no one on the whole path, not even chamois. Weather typical October.

Today to VRP, namely up the climbing route, down the normal. Path OK, but watch scree on slabs. From ferrata junction there are two snowfields - first shorter and bypassable, second a bit longer before ferrata start. At least for the second it's good to have an ice axe, because if it sweeps you...

Regarding what, snow? Everything as in previous years, no snow anywhere. But follow the weather forecast, one of the key points in the high mountains. Good luck

Today from Planica past Tamar over Srednja to the summit of Visoka. Some cables replaced, markings wait for better times. Unfortunately bushes too, pushing wildly onto the path. Otherwise nice steep path, exceptional summit views. Regards

after official check by C.A.I. mountain guide path 513B to ferrata - due to rockfall - and "via ferrata alla Ponza Grande" ferrata to High Ponca - due to old cables not meeting new EN norms - closed (put up warning sign at path start near Zacchi hut)

On Italian side of Ponca ridge at Zacchi hut notice of ferrata closure to Velika Ponca (path 513B). Apparently closed due to landslide, but didn't feel like checking real status because of snotty weather. Rather did circular tour visiting Mala Ponca and descent at lower lake.
