Vršič Pass

Print
triglavski16. 01. 2009 18:18:28
When nasty fog rules the valleys, it is good to go higher. That Miha chose the Vršič - South area for avalanche inspection just today is not mere coincidence. A proper amount of snow was needed, which mother nature provided plenty of, and today's completely clear sky contributed to us enjoying even those shady walls that nobody usually visits. And we skied one gully that we otherwise never would have.

Nice day today, judging by your pictures, I wonder if it is possible to reach Vršič from the Primorska side with a normal car without chains - just winter tires? Thanks for any answer and LP.

With a personal car it won't go, unless the road workers plow again, this winter they are exemplary in cleaning.

But I would still warn that the road is officially closed, as the traffic sign in Trenta indicates. Driving past the sign is a traffic offense. In case of close encounters with pedestrians, skiers, sledders, it can end very badly for the driver, regardless of circumstances. In any case the driver will bear the legal consequences!
Also possible damage to the vehicle won't be covered by insurance and road workers won't rescue you if avalanche or snow blocks the way back, which can pour from the embankment any moment...

I also think it's quite risky to push up there in such conditions.(until an accident happens)

Weather conditions didn't allow for any serious tours, so on Sunday afternoon I headed to Vršič. The road is mostly dry almost to the road workers' hut, but full of stones and icy patches, so it's smart to park at the last weekend (Mramor). To Šupca there's little snow on the road and road workers will have easy work. Even further on, the pre-New Year plowing is still evident and up to Tičarjev dom there's no more than 1.5 m snow on the road. The continuation to the top of the pass is of course a completely different story. At the guardhouse rain started turning to snow and at Tičarjev dom it was snowing nicely. All the way I listened to the rumbling of avalanches. Probably fresh snow avalanches, only one big one, namely in Zadnja Trenta. Also from under Mojstrovka only surface sliding, obviously the snow isn't wet enough yet for a bigger ground avalanche. Despite the snowfall and thick snow cover, spring is inexorably coming to Vršič too. Above Šupca catkins are already blooming, and rabbits are merrily racing on the road. Pity the idyll will end soon...

On Vršič still complete winter idyll, just like the road is still officially closed. New snow at around 1200 m (37th bend) is of course just a few cm, but from Šupca onwards it visibly increases. Some minor snow slides onto the road, otherwise no major avalanches, which is completely understandable since fairly dry snow fell, which has now bonded with the base. At the top of the pass about 70 cm fell. I descend to Erjavčeva koča, which stands lonely in winter guise, below a major avalanche poured onto the road, more expected on the first sunny day, otherwise current avalanche danger in the high Julian Alps between 3rd and 4th level. To Šupca skis ran nicely, then more miserably as snow was wet. Otherwise I tested new Dynafit bindings, first impression very bad.

Today due to blisters from Giarola, I switched to sneakers and checked Vršič. Started still in cool morning, no crowd on road and at moderate pace enjoyed mountain nature. On the section foresters were hauling roadside spruce wood. At height of Koča na Gozdu snow already thickened to almost a meter. Quite a bit already melted, plenty still persists. Path from Jasna to top of pass I did quite fresh in 1.30h. Up top I catch the right moment of race tour around Slovenia, where Jure Robič, as always without competition, arrives at top. Followed by Baloh 30 min behind. They already covered Primorska with 430 km of 1180 total. A bit earlier a group of 15 mountaineers, Slovaks or Czechs, preparing for ascent to Prisank, this time with at least sufficient gear. Some touring skiers heading to Mojstrovka. Kiosk surprisingly closed and looking to the plain, around already puddles. On northern ridges still large cornices of windblown snow waiting for toboggan, so caution on S! Yeah down of course it flew like crazy ski, and nice greetings-Rok.

Whoever likes to roam the mountains also with MTB bike, here is an instructive link from our guys, how high cycling paths reach. On the link video.mpora.com/watch/ZnHiMFgUF/ they go from Tolmin plateaus to Planina na Kalu and further on steep traverse with descent to Tominko.

On Vršič both Tičarjev and Poštarski dom are closed! Erjavčeva koča is open (for some time already), but on PZS website it still says: CLOSED - avalanche danger! Given this year's snow amount and current high temperatures, those in charge probably think no one will leave Vršič thirsty!

Hello,
tomorrow I'd go to Krn Lake and I'm wondering about the snow at Vršič Pass.. On promet.si it still says the road is passable with winter equipment.. I wonder if anyone knows how much snow is left on the road.

LP,
Sebastian

Nothing. Practically up to the last 3 hairpins no noteworthy snow by the road (individual patches), right at the pass the snow blanket by the road suddenly rises to over half a meter, but the road is passable without problem. Motorcyclists are already driving. Checked on Monday.
