Way of St. James – Gorenjska Branch

That's enough for this year, I've already walked everything I planned . At least that's what I believed, until my soles started itching again in September. Long paths have crept under my skin and won't leave . Something turned up quickly. A path just opened on the Slovenian variant of the famous Spanish Camino. This time from Ljubljana Castle to the pilgrimage Višarije in Italy. Višarska route...that's what the initiators of the path, the Rigler couple, call it. This will go like a hot knife through butter, since it's almost completely flat...was of course my completely wrong thinking . First day late morning departure, had to grab a coffee somewhere in old Ljubljana, evening walking in pitch darkness . But, once the legs warm up, no more problems. Experiences count, they stay in memory. And this path is very nice . If anyone needs info click na...gasperin.emil@gmail.com

And when did you do that trip, when everything was still green and summery?

@Irina, mid September. It was summery all days except one through Radovna to Kranjska Gora. First it was raining, from Mojstrana onwards it was snowing. But you keep walking and admire the water flowing between your toes in your boots

A bit weird, if you describe a September trip under 'conditions'. Would put it somewhere else.

I'm interested in the route of the Višarje branch of the Jakob's Way from Ljubljana-through which settlements does the marked path go.

We are a group of retirees who started the new Jakob's Path last week (we walk stages on Saturdays). We found that the path is poorly marked in some places, so some info would be very helpful. Thanks.

@minka .... I walked the path again end of this September and didn't notice any lack of marks. True though, you have to pay attention to them because the path often changes direction. I can send you my instructions, just tell me which email. Mine is already known ... gasperin.emil@gmail.com

A few people have already asked me how much time the path takes, where it goes, if it's really marked, if I'm sure they won't get lost, where I slept and such . But do you know what I tell them ?? That there's absolutely no problem. There are enough marks, just pay a little attention to them and sometimes talk a bit less so you don't miss them . You can sleep everywhere too, it's nice if you arrange by phone beforehand. So … for an intro to the lowland season this path is perfect and the time is just right. And no mistake … you can walk it anytime. We don't all always climb only peaks. If you do it in one go you can only congratulate yourself. And of course … I congratulate you too . Now a bit of technicalities. I walked the path again in autumn 2013 and also recorded a GPS track. It's 154 km long. You can do it in four days, but of course more comfortably in five. The first day is the most strenuous, the second a bit less and on the last day you also need to put in a bit of effort . The path runs from Ljubljana to Višarije above Trbiž. Its purpose is similar to the pilgrimage Camino in Spain. Here ancient trekkers (oops … pilgrims) supposedly walked to Višarije and further to Spain. Well, not exactly over all these hills where it's now marked for real but the path is nice as it is. It's marked with frequent marks in the form of yellow arrows, shells or shell stickers. Of course not WC shells but sea scallops, exactly like those in the Shell oil logo . Always go in the direction of the spread fan. They are found everywhere … on the ground, on traffic sign poles, on trees and elsewhere. If you don't see them for a suspiciously long time, you probably missed one. It happens. The simplest is to return to the last noticed mark and continue a little more carefully. Like this …. this is a somewhat more extensive intro to Jakob's Path – Višarska Route. Next will be stages by days with some photos for pleasure and how its course looks on Google Maps. For GPS tracks or any additional questions you can of course still turn to ZS or my personal email. I wish you pleasant walking and lots of enjoyment Emil

Day 1 - path from Ljubljana Castle to Sv. Duh near Škofja Loka Well … decision made . Backpack full, immense will, just the sleep the night before departure wasn't quite the best, right . And where to start ?? If you're a bit quicker on your feet of course at the castle to connect the central Jakob's path with this one you're now heading for. You who prefer to walk a bit more slowly but see so much more, for you the start is at the church of Sv. Vid in Šentvid. But I warn everyone with a raised finger !!! You have to start early on this very first day. The steepness will be tough and there will be a full basket of whining and gasping . So …. first warm-up for the fast ones First part from Ljubljana castle to Šentvid not yet marked but totally easy. Simply go towards Gorenjska on the left side of Celovška. If it's a bit too noisy just turn into side streets. You'll see how different our nice Ljubljana looks when you walk it slowly away from traffic . Before Šentvid you'll spot the church of Sv. Vid. Head there. To here you've walked 9 km in under 2 hours. Now for all …. path over Polhograjci At the church you get to know Jakob's marks. I wrote a bit about them before, just read it again. They'll guide you safely the whole way. And don't forget fuel supplies, to Škofja Loka you can't refresh your soul other than from the backpack . At the end of Stanežiče it gets real ... the path shoots steeply uphill, then eases a bit to catch your breath, then up again and so on. That's how you'll walk the whole dear day . A little strenuous, but you'll see how satisfied you'll ponder in bed in the evening about where all your legs have taken you. Oh … where do you get a bed ??? Don't worry, just call the House of Bread the day before and arrange. The Ursuline sisters accept every traveler who respects their monastic peace. I've been there twice, always well served and slept well . To here you've walked 30 km. About time I'd rather not speculate, we're different walkers. Count somewhere on 8 to 10 hours.

@strelec .... thanks a lot for the praise . A bit late, I know. Had to experience something new and something longer awaits me. But I promised and I stand by it. Soon the remaining days will come. Just a little more patience
