Zlatica, thanks. This crane fly is really something special. The spot in the middle of the citronella's wings is really nicely visible . Regarding the other two bugs - you're a real treasure trove of knowledge. Hats off! Best

Oh, I don't know names for all bugs, but luckily there are people who are experts in specific fields and I connect with them for help when needed.

If I'm not mistaken, the crane fly (in Zlatica's picture) is unfortunately often a victim of misidentification, as people think they have a giant mosquito in the room and kill it right away. But it has nothing to do with mosquitoes and leaves you alone... Tadej, tell us the secret, what do you have on your fingers that attracts butterflies?

I agree with you, georgia, the appearance is really totally misleading towards a mosquito, as soon as you see the long legs and pointed body. The similarity is understandable too, since both mosquito and crane fly belong to the same order of Diptera, just mosquitoes have their own family, crane flies their own. Tadej, your butterflies could be woodland browns...although it's still a bit early for them. And unbelievable, how they flew onto the hand?!

No, I don't see any similarity to a mosquito. I think it's more about patterns in the head conditioned by fears. For example, every poor slowworm is taken for a snake, a nose-horned viper for an adder and so on. General knowledge of nature is dismal. (And to avoid misunderstanding. These exchanges of events and photos and knowledge are invaluable and a unique gem on hribih.net.)

SamoK, I totally agree with you, and probably many others think the same, that this section "Which butterfly or bug is this?", created by Zlatica, is a unique gem on HN. Regards

Lily beetle is cute, but it does a lot of damage to lilies if we don't remove it. Regards

You're right, Zvončica, damage is also caused by butterfly caterpillars, leaf beetles, other beetles... but at the same time insects do very useful things like pollination, destroying pests (e.g. ladybugs eating aphids) and much more could be found. So nature somehow establishes balance itself, only where human interest is great, it intervenes, sometimes without proper sense of nature.

Tadej, your moth is very interesting, I haven't seen one like that in nature yet, regarding identification though...??? Moths are such a vast family that I wouldn't even dare say anything more than that. silvij, the golden minica came to visit you right at home, darinka your butterfly is of course the white ermine.
