From the trip to Veliki Javornik and Bohorski waterfalls. I went with the guides' section PD Rašica Ljubljana. They took us to mid-montane area where flora already changes to higher altitude flora. It's around 1000m. Kozjansko area. So we found paunchy alpine gentian. We saw wild pristine world of damp dark gorges. The gorge of Bohorski waterfalls is really wild. World of deciduous forests mixing with spruce forests. In between hay meadows. Many unfertilized, find everything from cuckooflowers to lady's slippers. In forest ran into ramsons meadows blooming abundantly. Even snow patches in between. Adrenaline rush to last waterfall Ubijalnik seen on descent. Steep path with cables. Being at front of group could photo lots of flowers undisturbed. Some pics failed.

How to distinguish Clusius' gentian from Koch's gentian?

Quoting from the Gaia website:

"Clusius' gentian is very similar to Koch's gentian, but the latter (Koch's) grows only on acidic soils and since there are few such mountain soils in Slovenia, it is also quite rare. It also differs in that its green calyx teeth stick outwards, while in Clusius' gentian they lie against the flower."

Today I'll show typical karst flowers on a scouting tour from Zagrada (850m) via Ostrič to Medvižice (1081m). Lots of narcissus grow here. We find a variety of typical karst flowers. The first common golden roots have already bloomed. There are patches where it's full of them. Since I was scouting for my retirees, I had time to explore all the hillocks and hollows. Found a lot - from Tommasini's finger orchid or hand orchid to Friulian feather grass, even monkey orchid I found.
This is probably common moonwort.1
French helleborine, I even found the Friulian helleborine.2
Monkey orchid -Orchis simia- surprising find - I have never found or recognized it before.3
Low relict - Chamaecytisus supinus.4
The teloh has already finished flowering. It's Host's teloh. It has smaller flowers than the fragrant one.5
Silver speedwell or the Liburnian one - I don't know the difference.6
In a month's time there will be lots of lady's slippers here. It's full of leaves. The plant doesn't flower in the first year.7
Austrian adder's tongue - identified by zvončica.8
I have already found flowering specimens of common golden root.9
10
The clustered helleborine is almost finished flowering.11
Overgrown mosnjak.12
It's full of narcissus or bedenics.13
14
Trieste fritillary.15
It's full of Jacquin's ranjak.16
It's full of common mračice.17
Interesting find in the rocks of Ostriča. I didn't know it could have such red stems.18
It's actually the stinking crane's-bill - Geranium robertianum.19
Between the rocks in the sun grows a very low zlatica. Zlatice are very difficult to identify.20
Narrow-leaved lungwort - Pulmonaria australis.21
Pale yellowish rootstock plant - identified by zvončica.22
Some crucifer. Actually, it should be easy to recognize because it has four petals, but I couldn't identify it.23

Velkavrh, sending some corrections and additions:

- trip 30.4.: in picture 10 it's not white dead nettle, but common honeywort

- trip 6.5.: we need to be careful with plant names. Laurel-leaved (not laurel-leaved misspelled) clematis and fragrant orchid (not orchis misspelled). Or maybe you just mistyped.nasmeh

- trip 10.5.: in picture 8 it's Austrian ragwort, in picture 22 pale yellow pheasant's eye. Still blooming on the rocky top of Medvižice.

Currently I haven't gone to the mid-mountains of the Alps or Karavanke yet. I'm moving more in the karst world. End of the month retirees go to Vremščica too. Hope we don't miss at least peony and common golden root, even if narcissus is gone. But I'll go alone to Črna prst, which I check every spring, and to Zelenica and to Vodnikov dom.

Currently I have from the library a handbook titled Catalog of Semi-natural Grasslands of Slovenia, where karst flowers are presented. Flowers are shown by types of grasslands - pictures are there, but no exact descriptions of flowers that would help with identification.

I take the most photos when I'm assistant guide, but no time for focusing and the picture is unusable for posting.

Picture no. 20 from 10.05.2024 - those golden saxifrages I didn't find even in the handbook Catalog of Semi-natural Grasslands of Slovenia. Golden saxifrages are completely omitted. I know, determining golden saxifrages is very demanding.

Today we're going with PD Škofja Loka section VGN to Košenjak. Koch's gentian should grow here. I'll see if I find it.
