Hi, I have a question which I hope to get an answer to and not just comments... I'm interested in buying an ice axe which I would use for winter conditions on not too demanding tours. We intend to attend some course in autumn for proper use of winter equipment. Now I regularly visit easier, especially safe spots...Komna,Mrezce.Debela peč,Velika pl..We want to visit also some higher ones(Kredarca,Stol...) but without ice axe we don't dare. Thanks

Revaltik Wizard, cheap and reliable. Recommend, but wait with purchase until the course, there you can usually borrow equipment and get advice what and how.

I agree, I have it, it's very good, usable also in easier gullies. LP

I'm looking for ice axe made by Titan from Kamnik, length between 57 and 60cm. For all info I recommend contacting ZS or via forum. Thanks LPB

Does anyone have experience with the Austrian manufacturer Stubai? Are the ice axes comparable to brands like Petzl, Black Diamond, Grivel?

I have a Stubai ice axe, what it's like I'll tell you at the end of winter it looks quite good

I have an old Stubai ice axe, and it's completely OK. I'm talking of course about the classic ice axe - as for ice tools, they've been a bit asleep in development in recent years

Classic ones interest me, nothing technical. There's no rapid progress in development here, right? The price is comparable to the above-mentioned brands. I have a philosophy of preferring to support smaller manufacturers over corporations.

Looking for ice axe for hiking/mountaineering use, deciding between BD Raven and Grivel Nepal. Raveltik Wizard unfortunately doesn't fit my hand, the other two are better in hand by feel. Are the ice axes comparable and does it matter which one I take

I have Grivel Nepal SA, use it rarely, on glaciers and for easy ascents, and it's completely ok for me. No complaints, but not technical, i.e. use it only for A,B ascents (see UIAA ascent categorization), C sometimes, anything higher than C forget, for that need better ice axe (mountaineering, not hiking) ... Best

UIAA has no such categorization, so I'd ask for clarification...

I thought so, yeah. But that has nothing to do with UIAA...

You are right. I browsed the net a bit, only Grivel uses those markings, others limit to B-basic and T-technical, and that's it. My mistake, or apparent misinterpretation of Grivel's standards ...

So between BD Raven and Grivel Nepal SA there's no significant difference for use in winter conditions like Stol Kredarca Except the price difference which is quite noticeable Thanks!
