Hi

Deciding on buying an ice axe and currently have in narrow selection:

-Petzl Quark
-Grivel The Light Machine

Would ask for opinion and recommendation if anyone has experience with the mentioned ice axes.

I think everyone will defend their own stance nasmeh Personally for Grivel..check here https://www.jerpoh.com/product/cepini/the-light-machine/ maybe some discount nasmeh

Surely there should be some more discount, because in Iglu they have them for 142 EUR winking

Otherwise it completely depends on the purpose of use. Quark has a more curved shaft and is super for ice climbing. This Grivel seems like a more versatile tool, but true, I have no experience with it.

Decide which ice axes to buy based on the purpose of use.
Grivel is a versatile tool. Steeper candles you'll climb harder with them than with quarks.
Quarks are for more demanding tours and waterfalls.

Administrator, can you please invite matej29 to pay for ads for his products, instead of sneakily joining the debate like he's just one of the hikers with experience.
The law also prohibits this.

I find it a bit strange that someone buying a climbing ice axe would ask on the forum as if this would be their first ice axe purchase at all ....

Zebdi21. 02. 2019 10:09:48
Well, it's possible. Although usually questions are between comparable models - e.g. Viper vs. Quark... etc.

Attention if you're deciding to buy one ice axe (singular?) Quark is out of consideration. Look at a hiking ice axe, length according to your size.

If you're deciding to buy tools (pair of climbing ice axes for harder couloirs and waterfalls) then the choice really starts. On English forums you have quite a few comparisons available. I would choose ice axes based on:
1. purpose of use (couloir-possibility of sticking shaft in snow, ice-thickness of picks, curvature+possibility of installing leashes, alpine routes-something in between)
2. hand size with glove, go try in the store, swing feel (some ice axes are friendlier to larger hands)
3. price
4. brand
5. other things

LP

ps ask a friend to show you how to use an ice axe, with that you test the model too. Even better go to an alpinism school and rent different ice axes the first year.

I'll use the ice axe mainly for help on ascents in steeper couloirs. Vertical climbing doesn't interest me yet. A few times I had a rented ice axe (completely straight and curved models) and partially curved models were much better for me and especially more usable on steeper terrain. But I haven't had a Quark yet to know how curved it is, that's why I asked.

Well, define "steeper couloirs", but if you plan to climb only with one ice axe, I would take something like this:
https://www.kibuba.com/zimska-oprema/cepini/gorniski/gorniski-cepin-z-zanko-wizard

If nothing else, it's more usable on approaches/descents because the shaft goes better into hard snow.

Yes I had something similar but Grivel doesn't seem any more curved to me. But it's great that it has an auxiliary loop on the shaft so you can keep the ice axe attached all the time

Steeper couloirs I can't define more precisely than that you can climb up without vertical climbing. Just that you can hold on with one ice axe, but I think sooner or later I'll go for something steeper too

Same as here with ads already spamming on Hribovska tržnica on Facebook. Maybe elsewhere too. Creating multiple profiles and talking to oneself isn't foreign to many hribi.net users. Now it's being exploited for marketing too. I also suggest to Tadej/admin to delete the post with the advertising link, even more thoroughly if profiles matej29 and Kozaki too. Thanks.

Kozaki, ice axe you have attached to your hand anyway. Except when climbing you hold it by the head or by the shaft near the head anyway. My advice would be to first buy a regular ice axe a la Grivel Nepal, if you want something from Grivel. The loop is attached at the head and not on the lower part of the shaft. When you get to actually needing climbing ice axes, you'll probably need other gear too and above all knowledge how to use it.

Here everyone wants everything deleted etc...I wasn't advertising and don't know what you're accusing me of...anyway if my link bothers you, no need to click it, it was meant for him. Otherwise I wish you all safe and reliable steps.

Samok, the best would be for the admin to delete you first from this forum, because it's about time since you're among the first to criticize.

Thanks everyone for answers. I'll try to help myself with the answers as much as possible.

Kozaki,

take a hiking ice axe with slight curve, it will allow you also occasional swing with ice axe. Loop should be at the ice axe head.
Main thing is to practice ice axe arrest every season, also that back and forth variant.

Good luck nasmeh
