Anyone walking in the Krn group these days. Snow is wind-packed, every few meters different conditions, from hard crust, powder, patches of ice, to breakable crust. At least up to Red Cliff no real avalanche danger, because there's little snow. Northern slopes looked more loaded..well snow is maaalo more.

On Sunday we were up there. Compacted snow starts from the saddle onwards. The path is well trodden to the end. The snow is hard, because it's quite cold, I think it's still hard. No issues even with regular hiking gear. Larches just starting to yellow... maybe really the end of the month "the real ones".

On Saturday with buddy up Amalia to Montaz top via Findenegg glacier. Path OK. First snowfield crampons needed, rest bypassable. At traverse over Dunja valley at start of descent from ridge path bit ruined and scratched. Cable bit damaged, caution needed because everything crumbles underfoot (dirt, rocks).
Just below top snowfall greeted us, it was quite magical
Descent via Pipan ladder to Pecol plateau, already light rain. Anyway excellent day used

I did an interesting fast tour to the top of Migovec from the lowest point of TNP, Tolmin Korita. First I went to the village of Čadrg, a bit of trail, more road. Then along the well-marked trail to distant Kal and then to Planina Na Kalu. From there it wasn't far to the top of Migovec anymore. Back I went past Tolmin Ravne again a bit on road and trails (well marked) past Zalaz back to Tolminka in the korita. Every time I go along this path past abandoned houses, it takes you a bit into the past and you reflect with respect on life in these gorges back then. Especially since I know my grandpa comes from this gorge...
In Korita, unlike this morning, there was a bunch of tourists. Rightly so, it's the season Followed by therapeutic cooling of feet in pleasantly cold Tolminka... aaa yeah, it was great

Beautiful day in this corner. Wednesday 26.12.. snow starts already in the valley, but just a sample... you can tell it's inversion, because at parking it's like in a fridge, while at Krni dol meadow it's quite pleasant. Continuous snow base starts only somewhere at the fork to Riomoz notch. To the top mostly powder that doesn't hold a person in spots. But there are more compact sections too. Under the powder sometimes ice too, so some pieces slid away. But little snow so it didn't pose any danger to us. At the saddle we went right to a smaller peak on the ridge, better view there. For more enjoyment of this area we have to wait for heavier precipitation... you know which... hehe.

On Tuesday I was under the south wall of Batognica. Conditions: packed powder snow, at certain places windblown to the icy base, which formed probably due to rain that fell during the thaw. The plateau looks quite solidly covered. From tracks in the snow I read that at least four went in the direction of Krn (+two were skiing). But it is quite cold these days so conditions remain the same, meaning under the plateau settled whole, partly windblown, hard also icy base below. How it is higher (plateau, top) I don't know.

We were up there yesterday (Sunday 29.10.2017) at bivouac Luka Vuerich. No crampons needed, a bit icy in places, but so little snow that you can step on dry or soft snow, which isn't so potentially dangerous for slipping. In short, a bit more caution than on dry path needed, but the conditions are still very good. Regards and safe steps.

Krn this morning. Snow aplenty, a bit more where it's drifted. Actually the least on the summit where it's most blown off. During the day it melted quickly, so conditions will probably be summer-like again soon.

For us locals this Krn is already quite "gnawed" but no big deal, it never disappoints

Road drivable to last tunnel. Conditions for ascent on Slovenian really excellent. On two more exposed parts cable out of snow, rest excellent snow for "piking". More in photos.

My first snow of the coming winter, where else but here. Even though there was little of it, it looked like sugar on a carnival donut. It was great... really Maestral-like
The road is drivable to the saddle. In the morning it was a bit snowy and icy from the hut onwards, then the sun melted the snow on it. I did a loop around the saddle, to the first fixed cables of the Italian route to Mangart (left of the Slovenian gully) and on the way back a quick jump to the start of the Mali Špice ridge. Up to the fixed cables of the Italian route to Mangart the snow is crusty, there it starts to appear ice under this powdery snow. Anyway, it was cool... Pics are unfortunately only from the mobile.

Here, sadly sadly, two (three) days after last post, rain washed away even that modest snow, not blanket, better sheet
But this time Kolovrat excellent viewpoint to get feel for snow on Krn, Krnčica, above Razor...etc.
Otherwise, for more need to go close up to see of course.

On Sunday to the head of the valley. Snow aplenty. Mountains slowly getting their winter coat. Before that a quick detour on the hunting trail to Planinica, where you really feel the grandeur of Loška stena.
