On outdooraktivnosti.si you can find everything about hiking boots.
Read the post: Hiking boots by usage, where it's generally explained how hiking boots are categorized into groups based on the terrain they're best for. If you're buying hiking boots, the most interesting post is about how to choose the right hiking boots for yourself: Hiking boots, how to choose the right ones.
If you already have them and they don't fit best or you want to improve the contact with the boot, read: How to prevent heel lift; or about hiking boot care: Hiking boots - Care and maintenance

Care for hiking shoes depends on the shoe type. First we need to figure out what shoe we have, what materials it's made of and approach care accordingly. Some questions:
-leather or textile,
-what type of leather, nubuck, suede, smooth leather,
-has membrane (Gore Tex, OutDry, eVent, …) or not?

Many have trouble with heel lift in hiking boots. Due to foot shape or deformation they can't get the right ones at all. The solution to prevent heel lift in hiking boots is a different lacing method. Likewise a different lacing method can improve leg circulation (for those who get pins and needles in boots) and prevent pressure on the top of the foot. The purchase of hiking boots doesn't start with browsing brands and looking for the one we like. In that case, the user buys something that doesn't suit them in use nor fits the foot. The brand is fine, but that's how you don't buy hiking boots, but town shoes.

About how to systematically approach buying the right hiking boot. Which type to choose, what properties a good hiking boot must have and how to test so that the hiking boot is the right shape and size, read in Hiking Boots: How to Choose the Right Ones?

Why? I mean, if he runs into a good one, though I agree that someone without much experience can hardly distinguish if the salesman advises or just sells what he wants to sell.

To someone deciding on their first hiking boots I wouldn't immediately advise which brand to buy. Many come for a brand because of such advice, leave with uncomfortable boots they sell after one use. Even "old" experts who say it must be Vibram because otherwise they slip, or must be waterproof because they once got wet in the rain, makes no sense.
I'd advise everyone to think where they'll hike with them, then try as many different types and models as possible and listen a bit if they run into a good salesman, to what he says. That way one learns best what suits them and what doesn't and thus most likely buys the right boots for themselves. More on segmentation of hiking boots, suitability for different uses depending on boot type in the post hiking boots.

Vibram is a name everyone surely hears from friends when buying hiking boots for the first time. Most hikers, travelers and alpinists recommend it and it is actually good. How it originated, read in story about Vibram sole. Our question is whether it is the only one or really that much better than others?

Slipping is not the fault of the boots. The real reason is lack of feeling ...

The issue is in "fill down". Higher fill power doesn't tolerate seams because feathers would escape. Hence gluing and waterproofness.

When down is better and when synthetic, you can read in the post "Down or synthetic".

If you have a reliable shoemaker, there is no dilemma. But it's hard to imagine what you mean by "better than original"?
