Hm, why turn off topography for better orientation? It's the topographic surroundings that enable better orientation in space.
Phones today don't lag in accuracy, I'd even dare say they outperform many dedicated GPS devices. Especially since phones have all possible receivers for various navigation signals. Example of the above-mentioned Oregon 650, which has only GPS and GLONASS, whereas Samsung S21 has GPS, GLONASS, GALILEO, BEIDOU.
Regarding map responsiveness, no comparison between powerful phone processor and slowness of dedicated GPS device.
The only thing that beats phone today is robustness of most navigation devices and battery endurance. Though if a bit picky, with full eneloop batteries my GPSMAP 64S lasts just over 20 hours. If phone used exclusively for navigation, in airplane mode, probably approach that time too.
Oh, I've been using hiking navigation devices for almost 10 years, starting with Etrex, currently still on GPSMAP 64s. So I know a bit what I'm talking about.
