Hike from the 2nd half of August 2023.

After marathon ascents on Tofane, a calmer hike suited well, luckily it was a bullseye.

Federe Waterfalls and the Federa Lake itself are wonderful.

It starts further ahead from the camp di Sotto, south of Cortina D'Ampezzo.

The waterfalls are a treat and there are quite a few of them. Further on is a hut by the lake and the lake itself is wonderful.

In short, a calm and beautiful hike.

Three-thousander north of Lienz in the Hochschober group.

Nearest huts are Hochschoberhütte to the west and Lienzer Hütte to the east.

Worth going if heading to Hochschober and descending east. Junction at around 2700m. So just 350m elevation to summit, about an hour.

Less visited than neighboring Hochschober and Glodis. Approach partly uncomfortable, more loose rock slabs needing more caution, less trodden but enough.

From around 2950 to 3050m slightly harder part. Otherwise nothing special, one short fixed rope if I remember and maybe bit of scrambling around grade I. More caution needed due to loose slabs right to the top. Markings blue, faded but visible enough.

Technically nothing special, easier three-thousander.

Hi! Where are there any water sources on this trail? I have a water filter, so I can filter from well or rainwater from cistern.

From what I read there are:
Jelenov studenec
Štalcerji village bar
Kočevska reka
Possible Loški potok

Problematic seems the section from Jelenov studenec to Kočevska reka. And then back to trail from Kočevska reka and on to Cerk - Loška stena - Goteniški Snežnik,... Is there water somewhere in between here?

What's the situation with ticks in this region? Last year (around Jun, Jul) I did a tour around Grete Grauzarije and there was a little sea of ticks in those pines. Every 15 minutes I was picking them off my pant legs and not a small number of all colors and sizes. Especially tall grass,....

I'd like to know which months besides winter would be most suitable for a visit with a small number of ticks.

Aha, the one who guesses continues. I just started following now and don't know all the rules yet. Ok

On this picture are Cima del Preti and Durrano on the far right. On the left at least Jof di Montasio (Montaž) should be visible, but it's not. Right after the lake around Pieve di Cadore peaks are still visible - one is Cridula. Then worse and worse.

Already Clapsavon and Bivera (far left) are barely visible. Back there behind those two Triglav should be somewhere in the distance as far as I know. But true, it was during the day not morning.

Trip 11.9.2023.

Right upon arriving from the scree to the start of the climbing part, I was greeted with a welcome. A stone up to 10 cm fell on my shoulder muscle without any warning or prior sound. Soon another batch of stones followed. I wondered who was practicing penalty kicks in the wall and kicking stones. It turned out to be a woman without a helmet rushing down, and two more in that group. I politely mentioned that I got a large projectile to the shoulder, that next time they should be a bit more careful or at least warn. The response was indifferent; it doesn't hurt them. Luckily the stone didn't fall from great height, otherwise it would have been worse than a sore muscle for a couple of days.

The continuation was more pleasant than the start.

After the initial slight climbing section, the ledges follow. Personally, compared to the path over Rizo (Kanjavčev ledges): This path is technically at least 1/2 to 1 grade more demanding, but Kanjavčev ledges are longer.

Kanjavčev ledges are less exposed, the path more fluid, you often have some 1 m safety margin, here not. Sometimes you need to climb slightly lower on the ledge, bend down, you can't always stand upright... It is good to use various climbing holds in the wall to make everything safer. If there used to be a rope sometimes on 1 section, now it is on 3 sections. But don't rely on it too much, as the predecessor already said.

Almost no orientation slings, tons of cairns, on descent perhaps look a bit more carefully at 2 spots where to go.

Nice mountain.

Ascent on 10.9.2023, Sunday.

There were many more people than expected. Consequently, stones were flying again and again. Especially the first part, when the climbing part starts from the saddle and scree, extra care is needed for stones there.

After the first climbing part it is easier, some mildly climbing sections still in between. On the upper Last part it tightened up. Very steep, lots of scree, stressful. On these slabs you think what if you make one wrong step and slip, no handholds.

Then the last climbing section as described. On the harder section very old cable in bad condition and rope. Soon the summit follows.

View ok, unfortunately this time no Slovenian mountains visible in the E direction.

Some orientation loops, especially on descent. Sometimes trodden then it stops, some more marks wouldn't hurt. Without prior climbing experience personally wouldn't have "balls" to go on such a mountain.

Near the saddle at the end of descent from the "King of Dolomites" waited another real king of this mountain, huge ibex.

Tour from 8-9 September 2023.

Adding description for approach from west (Rifugio Ospitale), not yet on this forum.

First part from Rifugio Ospitale nothing special, over stream, on gravel road. Later at old wooden sign turn left up and starts steeper. On map it looks much harder than in practice. Not some marathon ferrata. Called ferrata Ivano Dibona. 2-3 short cable sections in first part, rest at level of demanding Slovenian path. Halfway in upper part around 2700-2800m 1-2 longer cable sections. Somewhere at Slovenian B level, maybe max B-C secured path. About 5 min before bivouac there's unmarked summit Cime Padeon (2862m). Those 30m worth deviating from path, easy access and sunset wonderful. Bivouac 5 min further. Quite large, though only 6 bunks, plenty space for hanging out and sleeping elsewhere than bunks.

Then continue to Cristallino d'Ampezzo, takes some time, well secured again around Slovenian B, B-C secured path level. Path to decaying hut already described, as well as descent over scree.

Hoped for partly ridge route, but most under ridge. Still nice though.

I have one picture from the bivouac, last year. It still has light and you can charge your phone.

As others told me, Kanin is dry. I wouldn't rely on water there, I don't know because I descended elsewhere. When I went from the sawmill, Babe - Laške Planje - Kanin in the opposite direction, I had to go for water to Rifugio Celso Gilberti and back. 40 min one way, 1.5 extra hours for water.
