Ararat, with 5165 m, is the highest peak of Turkey and for Armenians, who cannot get over its loss at all, the holy mountain. The volcanic cone, which has not been active for more than 150 years, is covered with eternal snow and lies 16 km from the Iranian and 32 km from the Armenian border. Its lower neighbor Little Ararat is 3896 m high and lies SE of the main Ararat peak.
We climbed it on 23.7.2014, but before that we acclimatized thoroughly, so the ascent to the summit was not a problem.
We flew from Ljubljana via Ankara to the city of Van, which lies on the lake of the same name, then by vans to the town of Dogubayazit.
We started the ascent in Eli Vilage at height 2200 m and first day did 1000 m height to first camp Yesil Yayala, second day we climbed to height 4200 m and descended again to 3200 m, where we slept a second time. Third day we moved and slept at 4200. That day a hailstorm caught us, the unfriendly day continued into starry night and washed, sunny next day. A bit after one at night we headed to the Ararat summit. At 5000 m it dawned and at that height we also equipped ourselves with crampons. Snow starts around 4300 m, the path itself runs between rocks and snow.
We ascended in ideal conditions. From the top the view opened to Armenia and Iran. To the camp at 4200 we returned at 8.00. Right time, because the peak started wrapping in clouds and fog. Same day we did long descent almost 3000 m to Eli Vilage.
Nice tour, which according to our local guide's story, attracts more and more mountaineers and ski tourers.

From Tolminske Ravne to pl. Na Kalu, then in beautiful sunny weather with magnificent views of Tolmin Migovec, Tolmin Kuk, Green Peak. The view from Green Peak towards Podrta gora and Peak above Škrbina did not promise any more such conditions, but the wind still constantly played with the fog and allowed ascent up the secured path to Peak above Škrbina and descent below the famous climbing area Škrbinska Plošča back to the start. The path is normally passable; under Podrta gora, you still need to cross two short snowfields for now.

This water is on the mulatjera - towards or from Planina Na Kalu, below Tolminski Migovec.

Mavi12, if these photos, taken on Friday, 10.10, help you. I assume it's still white on the S side.
Best regards and good luck.

The cycling path is cleared and normally passable, the northern path to Sabotin without issues.

From planina Kuhinja it was bare on Saturday, 10.11.2018. How it is on the north side (due to fog) could not be seen.

That's how Krn looked yesterday ..
ksena9. 01. 2015 11:05:53
I was there on 2.1., but the conditions are surely different now, at least regarding the snow cover thickness. Definitely winter gear is needed, as it was and probably still is from the shelter to the top hard and icy in places.
Good luck!

No snow on the path. Don't know if such a long path is suitable for such a dog though. I certainly wouldn't take mine, even though they're in good shape. Just my opinion. Good luck.

On Sunday on the S side of Krn it looked like this. Given conditions on the path I did (Krn ridge from Srednji vrh to Vršič) I'd say the S side is similar - powdered, rocks covered in ice or frozen snow, the traverse slippery for sure given temps and wind. Good luck.

On Sunday, 5.10., ascent to Monte Capolago/Seekopf. I wouldn't describe the path, as Igor Z. vividly described it in words. Nice scrambling on initially quite crumbly terrain, higher up on compact rock. Traverse of the key spot on the tour - very exposed ridge would likely be the biggest trouble for the vertiginous, otherwise unproblematic with caution and firm step. Descent required all caution as scree was constantly "milling" under feet.
Nice tour, yesterday unfortunately no views, as fog persistently hung over 2200.

From Nevejski preval over the Passo degli Scalini saddle to Škrbina prednje špranje, where just below the summit of the notch the Ceria Merlone path starts, nice crossing of the Poliški špiki. First day to the bivouac on Špik nad nosom, where we feasted our eyes on the beautiful sunset over the sea of fog and the next day on the sunrise. Continuation of the path along Ceria Merlone to the section where the Leva path starts. This ferrata is also well protected. Before the end it joins the path to Montaž (via Pipan ladder). Despite the beautiful day on the Leva path no climbers, Montaž was mostly deserted. Views along the whole crossing from Škrbina prednje špranje to Montaž and from it were pristine, reaching far around. Snow on the path is just traces here and there, passages non-problematic. Occasionally a bit more caution is needed, since some pegs on both crossings are pulled out.

For warm-up via Slovenian to Mangart summit. Path bp, only snow patch persisting on path doesn't hinder ascent, marked path bypasses it. Descended via Italian route, many climbers ascending it today. Below Travnik followed path down to Bivacco Nogara then up ferrata Via Italiana. Little above ferrata start met four Czech lads, no helmets, no kit, bad shoes. After talk advised against continuing, they listened. Via Italiana also bp except one loose piton. Cable there very slack and dangerous for many.

BiaS ... just realize that wish, the path is beautiful in all seasons nasmeh.

zlatica ... I'm not such a force, but I have enough energy for now ... young though ...hmmm, 25 on the base that persistently and mercilessly grows nasmeh. And thanks for the praise ..it does everyone good, regardless of age, right?

Early with headlamp to pl. Slapnik, then in the glow of the dawning day to the top of Krn. Gomišček shelter was still asleep at 7:00, so I continued the path to the summit, descended to Krn Saddle, climbed to Batognica and descended to Prag. The path is bp, at the top of Batognica the impression of the beautiful mountain is spoiled only by the carcasses of a few sheep probably mowed down by lightning. To Peak above Peski there are no peculiarities either, from it I took it directly over the "nicely driveable" scree to Lužnica valley, past Krn pastures and completed the loop at pl. Kuhinja.
In the morning the parking lot was deserted, just after 10:00 it was flooded with cars. Not just the parking lot, but the entire roadside almost to Krn village.

From parking above Drežniške Ravne past pl. Zapleč to saddle Vrata, then towards Krnčica. Trail except two snow tongues, where we made steps with ice axe, without special features. Since we were early, we ascended in shade, on the way back we just wanted shade and cold water. At parking (around 700m) thermometer showed just under +30.
