Description: The Schimmelsprung ruins are located in a forest area belonging to the municipality of Gars, on a 90-meter-high rock hill that drops almost vertically on three sides and was settled very early. During archaeological excavations from 1965 to 1996, a fortified Slavic hill settlement was uncovered near the castle, dating back to the 9th century. In the Middle Ages, the then castle was the seat of the Lords of Thumbenove (Thunau). They were ministeriales of the Babenberg margraves. Heinrich von Thumbenove is known as the first owner around 1200.
