Matterhorn / Monte Cervino

For those going to Matterhorn bothered by crowd. Why choose Hornligrat instead of Zmuttgrat? Same as going Triglav peak summer via Kredarica instead of old Kugy and then NW ridge to top?

jax, just go up there, no, and record a video yourself. You probably anyway think that all these are just fovš to you, because they convince you the opposite

Matterhorn -KING OF MOUNTAINS! Would repeat it again, but really only for very experienced and very well prepared, both physically and mentally. Ascent from Hornlihutte to the top about 7 hours and descent back 7 hours or more!! Sharing memories from 4 years ago with you.

You're unnecessarily attacking jax now, who is cool. Just his opinion, I teased him a bit re Goličica. Lan - success and luck when/if. I don't do alpinistic feats as I've set a personal limit I can manage. Video shows key (hardest) parts out of proportion. Nicely described when guide colleague flew forever as fixed rope section broke. Maybe due to crowds doing parts fitness not climbing way. No longer time when Heckmair lit cig and enjoyed alone on top, but weather change like jam on coastal highway already said. Re underage probably Switzerland official no without liability insurance and official confirmed guardian/parent approval. At least was for less responsible things. Good luck all!

Bravo Filip, well said. Maybe just Goličica, but what's the use if for such length you get 10 Goličicas in whole Matterhorn route. Complicates especially in length, physical effort.

Filip, depends who you're going with and where. And which starting point you like more. If you're planning only 1x there, it's good to see Zermatt. If you don't return the same way, on these very visited peaks you'll definitely end up in the crowd. Anyway, I'd rather go 3x to Pelce, Kanceljne, Rigljica or something similar than to such frequented peaks. Good thing we can choose as we like. Regarding age there was a question too. With his companion it shouldn't be a problem. A 13-year-old went with me to Mont Blanc a few years ago, if I'm not mistaken, with his dad. No problem.

Hey hey Interesting debate, thanks everyone for broadening my horizons a bit more! On mental and physical fitness I agree, it has to be top-notch. Last year in September I ran a 60km ultramarathon in Karawanks with about 3400m elevation, from Zermatt I went to Breithorn (yeah, on foot from the train to 4000 and back) so physical prep doesn't worry me. This year I injured my ACL in the knee so fitness is a bit creaky but I'll be back by next year if I'm serious about this beauty. Mental is fine too, actually over the years I've gotten used to exposure and instead of some abyss it's become a phenomenal view. Actually what worries me most is the crowd. Say, I'm gaining experience on various marked and unmarked paths, there you get to know yourself and know the limit you shouldn't cross, whatever your psyche allows. Not like going to Triglav 8x in 1 year, and the other 350+ two-thousanders... Well, yeah. Only exception Martuljek, if I go to Julians I almost always end up there. But really don't know if now regarding experience I'd e.g. have to climb Rigljica, Rušica, Široka peč, cross Rokavi, Zeleniške špice etc etc. Anyway no mountain to underestimate. I "overestimated" that Zmuttgrat too, better not. Hornligrat is top, even with crowd. Anyway true I have this goal to get to Monte Cervino under 18. And I can add, I had/have a buddy who Matterhorn took from me...:/ Regarding bureaucratic stuff, insurance etc I know too, last year had to do all that just for Breithorn Thanks everyone, you broadened my horizons well, interesting debate

Watched that video from the Pole that coffee posted. No chance for any money that this Matterhorn would see me... Scary shit really...

@coffee haha what a face that guy has I can't believe where he gets them "yeah, these holds aren't to my liking, well...guess I'll just have to live with it " Otherwise I like this Hornligrat even more now, thanks for the video!! Insanely beautiful my eyes will tear up too when I walk over such a nice ridge...insane!! In love with this mountain since forever haha... @turbo probably talking about the same two...my buddy last year down, his climbing partner with him...worst is when he tells you that before he flew off he gave him that last high-five goodbye, right when he fell...horror, shakes you....anyway..it shows on you for a while, even now sometimes totally lethargic, think too much obviously Anyway...overall (oops, Slovenian, sorry)..in general some mountain that's a breaking point, for up there experience, fitness, knowledge and gear are never too little, lots of kilometers needed before, and necessarily 10 rolls of toilet paper to soothe the fear ...really insanely beautiful, nothing to add...only maybe that I'm arrogant enough to solo this cuz it's a whole highway up there but nah, at least not first time, so you can still carry me here for a while really enjoyable debate, thanks everyone, good night luv ya!

Good morning. Is anyone planning an ascent of the Matterhorn this year? Maybe some PD. I'd be happy for a response.🙂

Of course AO is in the domain of PD, if we're complicating things.

Yes, but they then take those who enroll in the mountaineering school, not just general PD members

You can also go independently. I also have such wishes myself. Actually, I've been waiting to find a like-minded person here on the forum, because it's much safer to go roped up than to risk a solo ascent. Sinplanin, if you have at least some basic mountaineering experience and knowledge, write to me in PM and I'll gladly chat about the Matterhorn.
