Brezniške Peči Ridge

Today I started from Most pri Žirovnici, which turned out to be a better and of course longer variant than from Završnica. I must say that the introductory part (over Brinjev vrh) is quite nice and interesting, - with some easy climbing. On Mali vrh I decided to descend to Sv. Lovrenc as well, which is a really nice excursion and panoramic spot above Zabreznica; despite easy access and local popularity, worth a visit.
Continued classically, i.e., over Gosjak and Golovec to Veliki Vrh, or Smokuški vrh, where there's hardly any snow, or better said - none. Continued to Sankaška k.
The trail is thus dry, passable, in this winter time really nicely scenic, as if on the palm of the hand for all who want some mountaineering experience at this time. (you even meet chamois)
As long as snow hasn't fallen to the lowlands yet, I recommend this really interesting trip!
I returned via "Kašarske" villages, or above them, but later regretted it, because paths above settlements are "rutted" and too numerous, so above Doslovčami I decided to descend to the local road, which of course doesn't amount to much hiking. OK. Next time I'll return either the same way or via Završnica, where it's definitely nicer and quieter.
p.s. - don't delay visiting Brezniške Peči Ridge, you can definitely decide for it still in the "old" year!
Description found in: KSA, trip: Završniško jezero - Smokuški vrh (via Brezniške Peči ridge)
search "Smokuški vrh". Good luck heinz!

Hello Heinz!
Last year I also did this walk, by the way very interesting little ridge, one of the nicer ones for this time. For returning back I recommend you descend from Smokuški vrh to the marked path towards Sankaška k., follow it for about 10, 15 min, and at the first opportunity follow the unmarked trail back under Smokuški vrh. Soon the path descends steeply, when it levels out simply follow it straight at all intersections (not down or up). Across pastures, under the traversed ridge, it brings you right under the power plant in Žirovnica.

And many more nice hikes to you and Rex.

Best B

Thanks, ben! That's exactly what I did (last time I returned via Završnica), but when I got above Doslovče today, the paths mostly led down, and there were some loose dogs on the pastures, because of which (or my Rex) we preferred to turn directly down to the village - where the trails led. Obviously we missed the path I heard leads across scree under Sm. vrh, still I don't know if it goes all the way to Žirovnica or Most..
The one you mention is probably quite frequented regarding dogs and a bit stretched. (I don't know, I imagine based on my observation today)
Thanks for the nice wishes!! (maybe we'll meet somewhere there sometime, and say something)..
I also wish you many pleasant, nice and successful outings, wherever!!

This afternoon my better half and I started from Završnica to the ridge, and reached the saddle under Golovec and Smokuški v. Due to the late hour we turned left towards Žingarca, so we didn't climb to the top. Up to here the path is mostly dry and only occasionally icy in places. Towards the top there is some snow visible.
Some photos from the top of Peči, which you reach with short and easy climbing;
Best heinz!

Yes, really. And the grass is growing. But I think it's not to despair, namely March 21 is still far...
It will crunch underfoot yet.

On Wednesday 03.03.2010 I started from Žirovnica, along the track towards Jesenice, followed to the reservoir via stairs to the ridge. First some light rain, then fog and finally snow. On the south side snow has melted, on the north there is still quite some and at some places considerable danger of slipping into the depth. Descended past the Sankaška koča to Jurček in Krpin. Walked about 2 hours, where the transport waited for me to the starting point. Do not recommend walking in the opposite direction! Can't wait for better weather to repeat the feat, as the view must be really nice, the path just right varied with a bit of adrenaline.

I must say that 2 hours from the hydro station to Jurček in Krpin is very fast (except e.g. for mountain runners).
I recommend repeating in this spring time -before it turns green. Starting from Moste (near the former inn "Pod Stolom" (or monument, shop..)). There the ridge is narrower.
Yeah.. without crampons in the opposite direction (some places) it would now certainly be at least a bit "adrenaline-packed"..
In the sun you get quite a lot from this nice tour. (then you have to take more time)
Personally GBP is close to my heart.
Best heinz!!

Today to Smokuški vrh from Završnica over Brezniške peči. I've been looking for a description of the path under Karavanke for a while, it's in KSA. Thanks heinz for posting the info on Sunday, so I could find the description and hike the path today. It's a nice panoramic and interesting one. Nice views back to the valley or to Stol, Vratača and Begunjščica. It was warm, light breeze over the ridge so great walking. The sun warmed the little lizards well, they were jumping along the path all the time, when I'm used to them I don't flinch anymore, if something rustled I spotted a snake too. But it was small, probably still a young one. I reach Smokuški vrh when noon starts ringing at sv. Peter. After snack and rest I go back the same way. Nice tour, I'll come again for sure. Nice greetings and safe to all.

Hi Klin, I was quite surprised when I spotted this little snake, it seems like a small modras to me. It slipped right into the juniper bush. The rock where it was basking was already nicely warmed by the spring sun.

hi
Here I saw an adder today at 1700m on Sr. vrh above Preddvor. It was only 30m from the snow. Unfortunately it was faster and I had the camera in the bag.

Ajda, by the tail thickness I'd say it's not exactly a youngling. Unless you zoomed the pic quite a bit

I zoomed a bit, it seemed small to me but just now I'm reading that poisonous snakes are shorter. Probably you're right, it's not some youngling. And today I stumbled upon another one. Best, A.

On the ridge I've met some myself.. - only not so early. But I think mid-summer it's quite lively.. Best time is late autumn and early spring anyway. Already because of the leaves, or rather views.

What yesterday's weather brought to the mountains could be nicely checked today from the panoramic Brezniške Peči Ridge. With a friend, we parked in Žirovnica (from the main road in Žirovnica, left towards Stol e.g., and right away parking on the right). The view already shows where to go, entrance at Vodohram above us, up the stairs past it to the ridge. Orientation no problem after that. Just along the ridge all the way, about two and a half hours of nice panoramic trail, sometimes grab the rock a bit. Left Karavanke and lake in Završnica below us, right Julian Alps and Lake Bled. It looked like everything had whitened, though we two only hit snow on top, just traces. But from 1200 m onwards nicely snowy. We cross several peaks and summits, main one Smokuški vrh (1122). Return more tricky orientation-wise if not back same way. Described a bit above, repeat briefly. From summit (indistinct, flags and yellow ribbon) straight on along ridge. First short drop (don't let yourself be lured right), then up again, then follow ridge direction, which undulates and in 15-20 min brings you first to visible path (no path in between), then it joins narrow cart track, that to wider one where markings. Right on them, after good 5 min when marked path turns left, notice new cart track on right (wood hauled out visible). On it, rises a bit first, quickly leave on path left. Path traverses a while, then down, and on our left if right we'll spot hunting observatory on saddle. Under it right and steep down a bit. Screes here too. Then bit of luck, but generally keep right except when right path steep up. If right, out to starting meadow. Otherwise bit or more road depending when turn down too soon. Luck ridge ends at exit, no danger of ending in Kranjska Gora if stay right too longjezik. Ridge great anyway, wet but no issue, feeling today wintry also due views all peaks. Steam from mouths already, gloves on. Winter day almostnasmeh.
There by the fountain is the start. A path leads to it, then stairs, then to the ridge. View from the parking lot.1
Narrow already at the start, a bit of scrambling is needed (not difficult).2
Morning awakening. It's cold.3
This is how Stol turned white.4
View towards the lake in Završnica. Today it doesn't have a particularly nice color.5
The ridge continues, we cross quite a few peaks. The main ones are Mali vrh, Gosjak, Golovec and Veli vrh (also called Smokuški).6
High mountain feeling.7
View of the Julians, for the goddesses8
Here too you need a few meters on all fours (or three, if we stick to the three points rule)9
Winter snapshot, the sun didn't have real power10
View of Lake Bled11
Defeated Julians. Just on Thursday they were glowing in the summer. How quickly things turn in life...12
Snapshot, you'll find many like this on this trail13
No idea why, but at the top you'll find this (and a bench)14
If on the way back you reach here, you're too far. Back a couple of minutes and (looking in this direction) onto the cart track to the left15
This view tells you you're right. Probably a hunting observation post (for WC it's a bit far from the valley...)16
on the return it turned blue from the west. Nice. 17
