Today I ascended from the church of St. John the Baptist in Ojstrica (above Dravograd) to the 1522m high Košenjak. The path initially follows the road, from the mountain hut onwards along a relatively steep path (partly cart track). No more snow, but I can warn that there are already snakes. I descended along the ridge path past the church of St. Urban. Regards Tadej

Today I also went with friends to the top of Košenjak, where we experienced very nice moments in a wonderful morning. Trail from hut rises quite steeply at first, but soon flattens and then gentle ascent to summit. Next time I'll definitely do this trail with kids. Recommend! LP Andrej

I went today with friends but it wasn't exactly pleasant! Cold, windy and snowy! Hut: "OPEN IN WINTER ONLY BY PRIOR NOTICE", on top -20 and north wind 30m/s. But it's beautiful!

I'm interested if anyone has info on the drivability of the road to the church of St. John the Baptist due to recent snowfall and if the hut is really closed, as the alpine association says it's open Friday to Sunday

Regarding the drivability of the road to the church on Košenjak there will probably be problems due to quite heavy rainfall in Carinthia. The hut is closed due to incompetence of the mountaineering club and the manager they entrusted it to.

The hut is open in winter only by prior notice (you get the phone no. at the mountaineering club)! The new manager apparently has a hotel in Dravograd?

Today, on 06.11.2010, Esther, Tadej and I set off from Dravograd to Košenjak, they say you're not a real mountaineer if you don't reach the top of Košenjak from the valley or from Dravograd We started at 07:30 from foggy Dravograd, reached the mountain hut below Košenjak (1169 m) around 10:30, where we took a short break for snack. Then again on the path to the top of Košenjak (1522 m) arriving just before 13:00. Interestingly, the closer we got to the summit the warmer it was, yet there were still patches of snow in shady spots. At the top we signed the summit book, Tadej and I photographed the surroundings, then returned to Dravograd via another (circular) path. The day passed too quickly thanks to great company and excellent weather. Let the photos tell more. (Photos follow)

Today I ascended from Ojstrica (982 m) to Košenjak (1522 m), conditions fully wintry, about a quarter meter of snow, no wind, cold in the shade, but nicely warm in the sun

Today with the youth section of PD Velenje we set off from Ojstrica (982 m) to Košenjak (1522 m). Weather was gorgeous, unusually hot even at 1522 m a.s.l., the "heat" relieved by pleasant cool northeast wind. Some snow patches still in shady spots a bit below the summit. No photos this time. Best regards

08.07.2011. Start from Dravograd, by the football field. Ascent through the town, then to Traburg and along the road through meadows via Goriški vrh. Wonderful forest and past three crosses to the hut. After refreshment steeply up to the summit. Overnight at the hut and descent to St. John's church then through forest to Nadgrad. The hill and views are wonderful. I'll remember that feat - Košenjak is now the highest peak I've conquered, also the biggest elevation gain. But, I have to mention the markings, which at the start of the path are very sparse and illogical. Twice I missed the right path and once went in a circle. Also the descent via Ojstrica is not well marked, and the path is overgrown in a few places...

Today, on 27.08.2011, the hikers from PD Ožbalt-Kapla set off on a hike along the Košenjak ridge. We gathered at 7 a.m. in Spodnja Muta, continued with organized transport to Dravograd and then towards Ojstrica, getting out in front of the Košenjak hut at 1169 m. We paid the driver for the transport and continued along the marked path to the Košenjak summit 1522 m. From there the path only descended to Spodnja Muta. Along a beautifully laid path between border stones and through blueberries we descended to Sv. Urban and then behind Kozji vrh down to the chapel of Sv. Simon in Pernice. Followed a gentle descent on an unmarked path. The path goes through the forest and then joins the marked path. Locals know it, but it's not drawn on maps. Total walking time with stops was over six hours. Along the way we found blueberries, raspberries and mushrooms.

Let the photos speak for themselves (due to illness this time I only walked from the church of St. John the Baptist in Ojstrica to the mountain hut below Košenjak, before that I was also at the service).

On Sunday, 19.2.2012, we went to Košenjak. Weather was great, the sun warmed us at the top. Snow was up to half a meter in places. We walked 7 hours, did a circular tour: Dravograd - Košenjak summit (via Goriški vrh) - Košenjak mountain hut - Dravograd (via Ojstrica). You can see photos on the website of Planinsko društvo Matica Murska Sobota: http://www.mojalbum.com/pdmaticams/20120219-kosenjak/foto/19447819

Košenjak from Dravograd via Ojstrica and return via Goriški vrh - another wonderful Monday ramble in my nearby area, as it's only an hour and a half drive to the starting point. Conditions on the path - from flowers to snow. Nice path, which I'd say is poorly marked at the very start, faded signs and no time indications. Next time we take this path, we'll know. Regards!

On Sunday 3.3.2013 we went to the Košenjak summit, past the church of St. John the Baptist in Ojstrica. We parked at a farm below the village, so we extended the path a bit. Snow was about one meter, but no track was made to the Košenjak Hut via shortcuts, so we decided to go by road instead. From the hut to the summit the track is well made, so access itself isn't difficult. Crampons aren't really needed, but snowshoes are recommended for easier walking. At the top the sun warmed us nicely. The view of Kamnik-Savinja Alps was fairy-tale snowy, so we enjoyed an hour at the top smile Photos from the hike can be seen on the website of Planinsko društvo Matica Murska Sobota: http://www.mojalbum.com/pdmaticams/20130303-kosenjak/foto/20578636
