Hi, does anyone have any data on the current state of the trail to Kuk's Peak? Snow patches on the trail, trail visibility, cairns after winter season...? Thanks Jernej

When mornings are foggy, afternoons clear, sometimes it was the opposite.

Currently still quite pleasant conditions, especially if you come at the right time. But not saying that winter gear is not needed or that new precip on Monday won't change everything.

Afternoon to Kuk's Peak, already in Kranj main roads closed towards Naklo due to cycling event. Drove via Besnica on narrow winding road. Started around 16 o'clock just right, path already in shade. Met no one, no newly fallen trees, avoided scree uphill everywhere to reach top with poles. Sometimes path was more eroded and harder.

Oooo, that was speed. Did you go from Črlovec and over Gulce? Nice destination

Only to Črlovec and back, snow like cream. And after the return, rather above Dovje to Borovje and Planica.

One post to promote safety. Accidentally found this report of an accident on descent from Kuk's Peak, or from Gulce, which could easily have ended fatally: https://www.facebook.com/groups/200278167400125/permalink/2001001417327782/?mibextid=rS40aB7S9Ucbxw6v In short, on descent a rock gave way under his feet, he flew down 20m into the depth. Sharing as a reminder to cocky ones (like myself!), how fragile we are and how little it takes for such a banal accident. It can happen to very experienced too. Matter of a moment. Always remind ourselves we are not invincible. Could discuss what can still be done to reduce the chance of such a situation (though never 100% safe). Say what I've learned: on crumbly steep pathless terrain search for steps in soil, grass, even gravel, rather than on those medium-sized rocks. Poles are worth their weight in gold there and must be used aggressively for balance and support. You must be mentally tuned all the time that something can give way under your feet. In short, a healthy dose of fear. Then you'll be slower and not walk overconfidently, but more carefully. Otherwise, that's exactly what happens: center of gravity on one point at that moment, increasing the risk. This descent from Gulce is delicate in itself, a week before there was heavy snow. Question if the terrain was perhaps still partially covered with soft snow. Which then becomes treacherous because it hides the steps. Maybe you'll rather step on a rock than into the unknown soft snow. Just speculating, since I don't know the conditions. If it was half snow-covered all the way to the top of the saddle, then the tour choice for that day wasn't great. Not lecturing, since it's easiest to be a general after the battle. Just thinking aloud... To all more and less experienced, I wish safe steps further.

"Not lecturing?" It seems to me completely unnecessary chatter and advice aplenty. All was nicely written already by the unfortunate hiker! A link would suffice.

dprapr, for you and probably many others with similar mileage as yours, this will be chatter. I accept the comment. But some greener ones, including myself, should be aware of the danger and think about how to walk on unsafe terrain. Sure, something slipped from the slope under me too, luckily without consequences. But I don't accept black on white "misfortune never rests" and I thought about what I can do myself so that it doesn't happen to me again. Though it's clear you'll never be 100%. For starters, I can admit that I could have gone even slower, more carefully and a bit less confidently. But one can quickly forget oneself and usually then shit happens.
