Hi

I'm glad we met. We started descending as soon as possible because the fog was getting thicker.

At the end of the lower scree field, for a change
we took a traverse along the marked trail below the walls of Brinova glava, crossed Rdeči stream and descended a bit further from Turk's groove.
A nice walk under the walls and shady wilderness.

At the end we refreshed ourselves, not in Kreda but
with cold.....

Today we ascended Kuk Spire. At about 1500 m you need to watch out (right after coming out of the forest). The first cairn can be misleading because the real path starts only after 15 m. You can hike on that path too, just need to struggle a bit more. Then follow the barely visible track to the right. The nasty scree drags to the saddle, then it gets better somehow. Weather was fantastic, no wind, so we hiked in short sleeves. A bit below the saddle we basked in the sun. At the summit about 15 people. The alpine mouse is still eager for company so it posed for the camera.

Any tour from Vrata valley is a good choice in these wonderful autumn days.
The path to Kuk Spire is already quite well trodden (compared to the last visit 4 years ago).
After the descent Škrnatarica tempted me. Ascent goes up a quite steep and annoying gully, under the summit a large jammed boulder stops us, which has to be somehow climbed over.
To the very summit of Škrnatarica now behind the vertical rock a rope is fixed which eases the ascent.
I treated myself to part of the ridge towards Dovški križ then back to Gulce saddle.
I recommend also ascent from Gulce saddle under Škrnatarica from where probably the best view into the amphitheater.

Why do we blindly trust our weather forecasters, or how a heavily optimistic tour turns into cursing below the summit and express return to the valley.
Vrata valley at 6am... That's how it started. We park at the no traffic sign in both directions for all vehicles, if someone doesn't know the sign: yellow circle framed in red! We prepare gear and head towards Črlovec. The hike passes in a relaxed atmosphere (we didn't know yet there won't be a spectacular sunrise) nasmeh so expected... Anyway wherever bk goes štrk goes too! We ride the Črlovec avalanche chute which persistently winds towards Gulce 2257m. Before the "real" junction we take the chute under the wall of Tičarica 2072m from there we observe a veeeeeery tempting gully but today's goal is VO! With a solid traverse to the right we cross into Gulce and from there slowly advance to the saddle. A bit below the saddle I questioningly look towards Škrnatarica and KŠ then after short thought we decide to abandon today's intention since conditions (both weather and snow weren't suitable). With great sadness in heart we leave the saddle and descend back to Gulce, descent was almost identical path as ascent only the "cut" at the end brings us almost to Peričnik. Most important, conditions: road to Vrata is icy and tire tracks are "šajba", Črlovec is partly bare partly snowy, snow more concretely starts on the chute from Gulce to Črlovec gully. Snow types a sea of them, from powder to slabs to frozen ice hard crust... etc. Snow is reworked in places but not where it should be... In gullies and flanks?! Path today wasn't dangerous but tiring as we were breaking trail and smashing slabs on the way to solid ground. Gulce are avalanched Črlovec too. Anyway nicely spent morning instead of whole day. Borut even found a jump and attacked it I of course after him! Obviously we'll wait a while longer for conditions to climb since snow is one big... But still for you enjoyed Juš&Borut. Approach to Škrnatarica wasn't considered due to low clouds/though when descending sun even appeared! velik nasmeh straight into the eyes! Today's aim if anyone's interested was KŠ-VO ridge!

Almost a kitschy morning had to be taken advantage of and I did; by nine I was already observing the idyll around me from the top of Kuk's Spire. Nearby and distant peaks all crowded, on the path I met few visitors. Weather as said, perfect! Intention was also to visit Škrnatarica, but due to incomplete gear I turned back just below it, it'll wait until next time mežikanje..

Today Queen - Kuk's Spire. One year nothing about her?! Visit accordingly, didn't have to say good day that often. Not for loungers. Orientation really became simple, since Mihelič's times the path has become trodden and wide, even two (switchbacks and shortcut). After Gulce recommend ascent by the second "chute" up, descent by the first (scree), although cairns on both. Summit part from saddle much more cluttered than last year, today artistic impression on descent wasn't the best. As much as we sweat up scree slopes (bypass right!), so much more pleasant and fast the descent. Today after long time quite cold, at nine probably only Kuk was hatless, cold wind was blowing. Then a beautiful day formed. Of course:velik nasmeh

On Saturday morning we zigzagged towards Kuk's Spire. We didn't use the forest shortcuts so we wouldn't miss the junction where there's now a carved inscription in the tree next to the cairn. Matjaž knew the path and we kept right through Gulce and avoided the scree. Before the saddle we turned left towards Škrnatarica. Here we couldn't avoid the scree and we struggled a bit to the gully entrance. Then some scrambling and scree sliding followed and we reached the top of the gully. We didn't summit Škrnatarica as we had no gear. But we continued along the ridge to a peak with a cairn. Views phenomenal. We returned the same way to the saddle and then went to Kuk's Spire. Fog was already chasing us there and views were slowly ending. Descent on scree followed and Vrtaško sleme was planned, but the path dragged on and we turned back, weather worsening too. Next time.

On Wednesday I did probably the last dry high mountain tour this year, this time Kuk's Spire, which I've eyed from afar for a while. Forecasted and actual weather ideal, couldn't be better. Path through forest full of leaves, didn't take shortcuts because original path much softer and easier. Up the second chute, avoided the scree on the left (not right), it's just loaded with fine sand, and rock doesn't hold well. Still easier than steep scree where nowhere to go.
From Gulc up maybe missed an extra cairn, but it went, otherwise straight ahead. Views phenomenal, even some flowers along the path (sure frozen now). Nice tour to explore Martuljek pathless areas, not too hard, but for many quite exposed in spots, from Gulc onward also crumbly.
Dreamed a bit about Škrnatarica where three hikers were at the time, but didn't know route description, time limited too, so another time.

Yesterday at half past six I picked up my mate in Lesce and we drove to Vrata to the Črlovec scree. We parked there and headed to Kuk's Peak. The path was without problems, just some snow towards Gulce, but no issues. After a short stop on the summit we descended back to Gulce and headed to the gully towards Škrnatarica, where there was quite some snow and without an ice axe it would have been hard. When we reached the top of the gully we climbed to Škrnatarica, took some pics and headed on to Dovški križ. One needs to be careful to find the best passages - cairns (a bit of snow messed with them). After great views on Dovški križ we descended to the bivouac, with a quick hop to Šplevta just to lose a glove, then past the bivouac and little Matterhorn on a really long scree to the valley. Beautiful day with some wind on peaks. Probably one of the last snow-free tours this year, thus one of the nicest. Best regards!smilesmile

Today the solitary pyramidal beauty welcomed me into her embracebig Wasn't quite sure if this was the right choice for these hot days, but what can I do if she called me anyway...big Despite start at Črlovec before six a.m., felt some kind of stuffiness in the whole valley right away, which a light breeze later mixed a bit at Gulce saddle. Met no one. Early start was a good choice, as clouds started gathering around surrounding peaks only on descent, while I had clear weather almost the whole time.smile Path no problems, no snow anywhere on the path. Cheers!

This beauty has tempted us for quite some time and on Saturday the moment finally came to visit her. At 5:30 we were ready before the Črlovec scree, the morning began awakening and rosy-faced Stenar greeted us. The view fills the soul, and already with the route description in hand we headed to this pathless terrain. The path is quite visible, so no major difficulties. The forest path is pleasant, we enjoyed wonderful views of Rjavina, soon Vrbanove špice, Cmir and Triglav appeared in the morning sun. The forest path passed quickly and according to the description that says the cairn is key when we exit the forest, we turned to the scree area (that cairn leads off the true path wink). But there in the middle of the scree we spotted the path winding through the debris. The path led us over a grassy slope where flowers cheered us, later the path went to the scree under Gulce saddle. But we crossed the scree nicely on the path, we will treat ourselves to it on the return. At the saddle we took a short rest and then even on all fours towards the summit. The sky was cloudless the whole way, we looked forward to wonderful summit views, but the closer we got to the summit, the more fog started chasing over the peaks. But luckily the wind mixed and blew away the fog so the amphitheater appeared in all its beauty, but for such a short time that when I managed to get to the camera, fog covered it and offered us a truly mystical view of it. Then Špik appeared in the sun and briefly Škrlatica too. Well, we still got our fill. The wind cooled us well. The fog was getting thicker, so we quickly headed back to the valley. However, the fog stayed at the top, while the sun warmed us on the way as we enjoyed the descent on the screes. We even found the right path and unwittingly made a loopbig. The forest path pleasantly cooled us and full of impressions we were already at the car. I am glad we finally managed to visit this beautiful peak.

Last weekend we visited Kukova Špica, starting early in the morning to avoid the heat on the long scree slopes, just after 9 a.m. already on top.

Along the whole path we chose the right trails, you just need to check a bit beforehand and orientation is fairly easy, but the group ahead of us possibly got quite lost (they lost about an hour), so it can happen and you need to keep your eyes peeled.

Great views from the top, photos posted on my website: Kukova Špica photos
The group descends from the summit before the Amphitheater.1
