Lanževica

Given this year's poor winter and forum comments that Debela peč etc. easier peaks are accessible without winter gear, I thought it was similar for Lanževica. Maybe a suggestion for another hill? I want snow and a nice view, access without ice axe and crampons. Thanks

On Sunday, Lanževica was not accessible without proper winter gear. Under Bogatinsko sedlo there was a hard icy base.

Nice, Matej, we on Saturday from Savica. Winter gear stayed in or on the backpack, nice that only on the summit fog caught us, so no views...

At least once a year we go to winter Lanževica, almost never in the same conditions. This time we had quite mixed conditions, several times unpleasant snow base, so even with snowshoes we didn't go very fast. For orto hikers it was all even more strenuous.

To the hut below Bogatin the trail is good and packed, further in Gracija valley towards Bogatinsko sedlo not. Ridge access to Lanževica is partly hard, partly softened. Need to watch for holes under the snow, which are sometimes hard to spot. Descent to Lepa Komna and continuation to Planina na Kraju is a fairy tale in itself velik nasmeh.

The reward for everything was super ambience, wonderful weather and satisfaction with the achievement nasmeh. Both huts are closed, parking fees not yet being collected.

This Sunday my colleague and I headed to Lanževica and caught a really nice autumn day with wonderful views of the misty and the Adriatic Sea and Dolomites in the distance - at least I think it's the Dolomites.
Could someone who knows better please write which peaks are visible in the distance?

Also on the eighth picture are Dolomites. Dark tooth left of center is Monte Durano and right of it wide Cima dei Preti - that's the so-called Friulian Dolomites. Right of these wide already whitened Civetta, right of it unmistakable Monte Pelmo and far right pyramidal Antelao.

Saturday from Savica to Lanževica. Although the peak gets more attention in winter, the autumn path to it is also extremely beautiful.
At 7.30 at Savica quite a few cars. After half an hour of walking already above the cloud cover, which lingered over the lake for quite a while. Sky wonderfully blue, occasional wind strengthening towards the summit, more encounters on the path only on return below the hut on Komna.
From the hut below Bogatin via Lepa Komna to the summit, then circular via Bogatinsko sedlo through Gracija valley to the hut on Komna and to the starting point.
On Komna larches are turning golden, some already shedding. Most around the hut, on Lepa Komna only individuals peeking like antennas from dense green dwarf pines.
Lanževica is a wonderful viewpoint. You don't know where to stand, as the backdrop is stunning in all directions. Visibility very far.
Path marked all the way, easily followable over Lepa Komna.
Safe and happy to all. nasmeh

Lanževica 24.11. Yesterday's day was clear. Chilly. And sky cloudless. From Vrsnik we started walking in the morning. On the known path over Oslova škrbina. We planned to follow traces of Rapallo border from there. But didn't decide, as snow visible in places and didn't know how it looks. Descended a bit lower, skipped long path over Lepa Komna and reached path to Lanževica. At summit still some hikers. For descent chose off-trail to below Kaluder, then past hunting hut and abandoned pasture back to path to start. From summit some cairns helped. Then nothing. Had to drop below Kaluder, find barely traceable trail and avoid dwarf pines. Checked path where Marijan and Renato went to Kaluder recently. Quite demanding approach from that side. Reached start still in daylight. Both satisfied. As SOCRATES says Satisfaction is natural wealth. Luxury is artificial poverty. Who knows?

From Lepena along almost icy path to Krnsko jezero. Here we already enter almost unearthly scenery that always fascinates me literally in winter. Part of path from Krnsko jezero towards Bogatinsko sedlo reminds me of space, and those who want to see space and another dimension up close should go on this path. We walked on snow hills, immersed in nice weather and snow idyll all to the top. At top a real chill and not too strong wind, so didn't linger long on summit itself. Upper part of ascent and descent done our way so didn't go to Bogatinsko sedlo, but did our own."""
When you feel the greatness of birth, in sunny day on snow idyll, silence in wind safely standing above abyss. Acceptance in solitude,, feel birth,, and happy to be HERE and NOW .. simply Live for Today. and WE2 do just that ,,, for today,,, tomorrow already stranger, yesterday already history ,, today we are here in paradise,, Enjoy.

Every winter we head to Lanževica and each time it's a slightly different story. Usually we do a loop over Bogatinsko sedlo to the top and back via Lepa Komna, conditions are accordingly pretty unpredictable. So we haul a ton of gear from snowshoes, all sorts of crampons, ice axes too. But it's worth it, Lepa Komna didn't get its name for nothing nasmeh.

Currently the trail from the parking at Savica waterfall all the way to Bogatinsko sedlo is in excellent shape. To the saddle we used microspikes, snowshoes weren't even an option. From the saddle to Lanževica the snow is mostly packed, so we used proper crampons there.

Descent from Lanževica to Lepa Komna was a mix of all kinds of snow. Too hard for snowshoes, just right for crampons. They barely sank into the base in places, just a few steps aside and we were sinking knee-deep. Ice crust surprised us multiple times and we punched through it like mad. It was tough, but still wonderful velik nasmeh. We recharged batteries in the nearly empty Dom na Komni and descended to the valley already in deep shadow.

At the Savica parking super early in the morning they charge 10 € and that's already now at the start of February. On the official site *promet.bohinj.si* the info at the time of this post is quite different. Obviously someone at the municipality didn't do their job, or the parking owners are more ambitious types.
We park Konjiče on the icy parking lot by the Savica Waterfall.1
Entry fee for today is 10€ despite other information, ice skating is obviously included in the price.2
The hut below Bogatin is also open this time.3
The start is similar to a bobsleigh track, so we put on small crampons right away.4
The first of many :)5
The path to Komna is perfectly trodden and just the right hardness.6
We have warmed up nicely, so we don't stop.7
The first sun enhances the already beautiful landscape.8
There is not much snow this year and the hut is fully exposed.9
We are doing a circular variant ... Vratca, Lanževica, Lepa Komna.10
Distant view of Bogatin and the saddle below it.11
View back. As forecasted, lenticular clouds quickly drew over the sky.12
Lenticular clouds give a completely special, mysterious light.13
We are already right in front of Vratca. The track to here runs quite high on the slope.14
Fortunately, the lenticular clouds covered the sun again just before the ascent :)15
We step into a different world of frozen snow and equipment change follows.16
That's where we will go, towards Lanževica.17
Characteristic Krn in the distance.18
Suddenly a strange bird flies over us :)19
And we continue...20
Throughout we admire the play of light and shadows …21
The path is hard, compact, in many places not even well visible.22
Group photo at Lanževica. The variant via Vratca offers excellent conditions.23
In Primorska clouds are slowly gathering already.24
We continue across Lanževica and search for a suitable gully for descent.25
We quickly find it, descending towards Lepa Komna.26
We seek the best passages, mainly due to the varying snow base.27
Areas of hard snow, nasty crust and powder snow drifts alternate.28
We walk entirely on our own, enjoying … :)29
Untouched whiteness everywhere …30
We still continue nicely on our own …31
View back …32
… and ahead. Somewhere here we finally join the tracks of the predecessors.33
It safely leads us through terrain that is not the most visible.34
Abundance of hillocks, nicely decorated with wind lace :)35
Hut below Bogatin. Soon we will close our loop.36
Surprisingly, the sun has not softened the path too much, probably due to hoarfrost.37
On the return we only visit Dom na Komni. We meet only a few hikers.38
Descent to the valley already in deep shadow, this time without crampons.39
Even Lake Bohinj is bidding farewell to the sun.40
We're already in the photo finish...41
Conclusion. We made good use of the morning entry fee :)42
GPS track of the hiked path. It recorded 22 km and 1600 m elevation gain43

Wonderful! As for parking fees, this really goes beyond all limits. How is it now, since no receipt is needed anymore? Our great politicians approved that.

@bagi, interesting poles with an attachment like on an ice axe. Does this attachment just mount on the pole, or are they special poles?

@lubadar ... Turbo hit it right, the poles are Black Diamond Whippet. They are purpose-built with a hybrid ice axe, intended for *relatively* undemanding winter ascents. The pick can be easily removed if needed and the poles become regular hiking poles. In the previous model, the pick was not removable.

Our experiences too... we've been using them for two years and they are definitely one of the better investments. We don't take a classic ice axe on every ridge and I believe many others don't either. Regular hiking poles are much more comfortable for walking. But in winter there's often a false sense of security, since even from a ridge in case of a slip you can fly far without possibility of stopping. This flaw of classic hiking poles is fixed by Black Diamond Whippet and that's why we bought them. They've come in handy in many places and I can only praise them.

However, they are not suitable for steep and exposed terrain, where using a classic ice axe is more than recommended. Likewise, you can't plant the pick in very hard surfaces because they are simply too light. Nor there where thrusting the adze into the ground is needed. Usually that's anyway in places where common sense advises against using these poles nasmeh.
